PS VITA TV announced (~$100, Vita set top box - as in it has no screen - for TVs)

Why not add ps2 support? Technical difficulties I assume.

A all in one psp, ps1, ps2, and vita device should be interesting.

Hoping PS2 support will come in the future - that will make it a even greater deal than it is now.

All they have to do now is fix the library for PSP via PSN...

I'm sure they would if they could but PS2 emulation on Vita is hardly straightforward if its even possible at all. PSP emulation was a big enough accomplishment on its own.

I'm guessing there will be a completely different PSN store for this device.

Also, memory cards are still going to be a problem. I hope I can just use my current card without it asking me to reformat it before it can be used.

I've watched the VitaTV ad a few times now and I noticed something odd. It could be just for advertising purposes, but just before the kids come in to switch the PS4 on, the mother and father use the VitaTV to watch a movie. The advert then flicks between the two people watching the movie they started and the kids in another room playing a game. Doesn't that suggest that you'll be able to do both simultaneously? Like I said, it could just be for advertising purposes. Multitasking? Watch to see what I mean:

I asked myself the same question, and I think this is a "marketing white lie". It definitely assumes the family in the ad owns 2 Vita TV. One in the living room, and one in the kid's bedroom.

not really a lie, you see the kids powering up ps4 even when the parents are already watching something, you can also see a VTV on the main living room. it's not assuming there are 2 VTV, it basically show that there are 2 VTV

Or they have two TVitas. One is in the same room as the PS4 and they're watching movies directly off of the TVita and the second is in the other room streaming the PS4.

Parents are using VitaTV to watch streaming movie [no PS4 needed, its clearly turned off] and kids are unable to game on a big screen where PS4 is located. So they move to their own room and play PS4 via Remote Play.

Who are these people complaining about the 100 bubble cap! I have never hit it yet.

I tell you this is almost impossible with a 32gb card. Unless you are downloading only tiny minis. You will run out of space WELL before running out of bubbles.

I think everybody got that. The question is: how many vitatv do you need to achieve this. It seems the answer is 2 (one connected to each TV), but the marketing video is not really clear about this, leading some people to believe that the vitatv is not only able to stream the parents' movie to the tv it's connected to, but also stream the ps4 content to a TV in another room (through DLNA? Airplay?).

That's where the confusion is

No, you need one VTV to do remote play. I don't honestly understand where there is any confusion at all. You need one Vita and one PSP to do remote play from the PS3 and one Vita to do remote play from the PS4.

You have a PS4 in one room, you have a VTV in another room, you can do remote play.

Some people might want multiple VTVs so they can have one in their living room for Vita games or whatever or like in this example, use one for Netflix/films in the living room and one in a bedroom for PS4 Remote Play, but there is no requirement to have two VTVs to do PS4 remote play.

I will have a PS4 under the TV down stairs, and a VTV connected to my TV upstairs. I will be able to do remote play.

The PS3 can barely emulate PS2, not sure Vita could handle it.

I think we now know the reason Vita is getting so many native ports - God of War 1+2, Metal Gear Solid 2+3, Final Fantasy X + X-2, Jak & Daxter 1+2+3, Ninja Gaiden Sigma 1+2 etc.

They want this software on this platform.

Yeah, you're right. I just watched it again and you can see there's still a VTV next to the TV when the parents are watching the film. Oh well, it was just a though :)

The PS3 actually software emulates PS2 quite admirably, hacked PS3s can play most titles.

Indeed, same with the Indie lovefest.

You misunderstood what I wrote.

Let me rephrase:
you have 2 TVs, TV A and TV B
your VitaTV is connected to TV A, and your PS4 is connected to TV A as well.

in that type of setup, can you remote play with your ps4 on TV B? Because that's what the marketing video seems to imply. Hence my answer, in the marketing video, there are obviously 2 VitaTV devices. One connected to TV A, the other connected to TV B.

In the marketing video, the parents are watching a movie on TV A with their VitaTV, while the kids are remote playing the PS4 (plugged to TV A) on TV B. So either some magical dlna connection is happening, or, as I've been saying in my previous posts, there is a second vitaTV connected to TV B.

Is that clearer?

I didn't realize my explanations were so confusing that so many people misunderstood me :P

Indeed, my bad

This thing seems to have a 'Vita Memory Card Slot' on the side and a 'Memory Card Slot' on the rear (assuming SD).

What's with that? I'm guessing VitaTV games require the Vita cards and movies, photos etc. can be loaded using SD. If games can be loaded using the SD card then that kinda kills any excuses they made for the proprietary memory format.

I hope we start to see more console ports now.

One is for Vita games on card, the other is for a Vita memory card.

You know what they say when you assume?
It's a Vita memory card slot.

What are you talking about? It has a Vita card slot at the side for Vita games, and a Memory Card (proprietary Vita memory cards) slot at the rear. It's just like a Vita. There's no SD.

Would you say people should read the OP? ;)

This is so beautiful white, why cant Sony release a white PS4 so that I could match them?

Good to hear it sold out in Japan, hopefully the demand will be great enough to bring this thing west if they are still on the boat about it. Get it done Sony!

I don't really see the purpose in this. Netflix is nice, but who really doesn't have at least a Roku by this point? Streaming PS4 games is nice, but I'd rather just save $100 and unplug my PS4 and move it to another room if I couldn't use the TV to which it was plugged in to. Considering how I take my laptop out every day, the PS4 isn't very difficult to move from one room to another. However, it definitely does look sleek. =/

I thought it looked silver.

The purpose is to offer both of those features plus local PS1/PSP/PSV/PSN games without ever having to unhook anything, for $100.

That's a pretty damn good deal. Does it have widespread implications for all the media industry? No. But it has several very legitimate angles to market itself within the video game space.

ps4 streaming works anywhere with an internet connection, not just locally on the same wifi network

this is VERY useful as an extension of the ps4 in secondary locations (office, hotel, family)

There are plenty who don't have a Roku. :|

I suppose. I guess I'm just the type of person who would rather spend 20 seconds to unplug my PS4 to move it to another room than spend $100 dollars. I'm assuming that these same games will eventually be available on the PS4--I'm not even sure if I'm going to have enough free time to play all of my PS4 games, let alone PS1/PSN games.

True, but I can't see myself taking it anywhere other than my home. If I'm on a vacation with friends or family, I don't expect to play video games. If I'm at work, I expect to be working.

Third Parties will be chasing Sony then... That install base :O

I hope the Bravias have an awesome upscaler...

yeah, this is inevitable, given that smart tvs are the next big thing.

that, and bundling it with the ps4.

vita as a platform just went from "dead" to outselling psp with this strategy.

Sony would be smarter if they get samsung to enable Vita TV on their screens too. I don't know if they want this to be a bravia exclusive.

truly spoken like a man that takes no business trips, and has no kids.

True. I'm currently a full-time student and part-time employee. I guess I'm stupid for thinking that work is conducted on "business trips" and that vacations are to spend time with friends and family, not for staring at a TV. Most of my vacations are spent in Vegas. The majority of my time on vacation is spent being hungover, meeting up with friends, and partying. =/

You aren't stupid, but you're definitely not speaking from experience. Of course you can find a little downtime in both those circumstances.

yep, you are. business trips can last several days to a full week, the majority of which is hotel downtime.

family vacations? same thing. having another option to keep kids occupied is invaluable when you're away for 1 to 2 weeks, and I'll be damned if I'm trusting a 400 dollar console to airline baggage handlers.

I'm totally down on this device. I don't have enough space for all my shit on my Vita with 32GB. I could use this for all the HD ports and games that play better on a Dualshock. Then keep my Vita mostly for PS1/PSP games because the resolution looks awful on HDTVs. Downside is I'll need to grab another memory card. Too bad this doesn't come with HDD support (external or internal).

Amazon Japan just sold out in the time it took me to create an account. (Shipping wouldn't be too bad here in Korea if they let me).

I said the opposite.
Oh.
Most people won't bother to sell the device they found out was the wrong one and then buy the right one. They'll just chalk it up to a bad experience and dock Sony's rep.
Reading comprehension failure on my part, they aren't going to return them. They're just going to be miffed that they're all buying the wrong Vita, and it'll lead them to not buy software for it. That makes more sense.

Is remote play via internet possible with Vita TV? That would be awesome, just grab your Vita TV, connect it to the TV in your friends house and have access to your PS4.

It seems to be the case, at least the press release says that remote play will work as with PS Vita:
PlayStation® 4 (PS4™) remote play
As with PS Vita, PS Vita TV will also support PS4™ remote play and Wireless Controller (DUALSHOCK® 4) through future system software update. This will allow users to enjoy most of the PS4™ games on PS Vita TV as if they are playing it on the PS4™ system.

There's no way that this thing is not coming out of Japan. Japan mostly plays games on handhelds nowadays; Sony would be crazy not to sell this to westerners, who are the ones playing games in the living room.
