Your Greatest Ruined Moments of Gaming?

Sonic 3 + Sonic Knuckles, my nephew (slightly older than me) watching and cheering me on as I reach the final stages, I grab the last emerald after failing to do so a few times, nearing the final boss encounter when we're interrupted and asked to go to the supermarket. We insist we can't but it wasn't an option, so we pause the game and go.

We return, hoping that nothing went wrong in the meantime, press start to unpause the game. Nothing happens. Press all the keys in the controller, nothing happens. Unplug and plug back the controller, nothing happens.

We stare blankly at the television, at the frozen picture of Sonic going full speed in Super form and coming to the realisation that we lost all of our progress and effort.

My nephew begrudgingly resets the console. We look at the start screen, turn the console off again and go outside to stare at clouds.

Haha, great read! I had similar incidents as a child. Those were the save-less days of gaming!

During that epic ride near the end of RDR when the music starts playing and you're leaving the snowy mountain I ran into a bear right as I was riding away and thought to shoot it. It mauled me to death and it just loaded me up like any other death and I missed that entire moment of culmination. It auto saved after that spot so there was no way to relive that moment for me.

R* really didn't think out the best way to design those moments.

Was about to beat my best friend at Halo 2 for the first time after getting my butt kicked for months. Score was tied and I nearly had him when his little bro walked in front of the screen and he got me. We still have a laugh about it every now and then.

Waited an age to borrow Twisted Metal World Tour from my local video store. When it was finally available my Mum (saint of a woman) picked it up on the way home from work but I had to go to bed for school.

I plotted my excuse to be sick from school and successfully pulled it off. As soon as the house was clear I set up the PS1 (remember when you had to put consoles away?) and grabbed the case for twisted metal. I popped open the case...

Post-It note that read "Nice try, Love you"

I can't remember any particular game being spoiled for me at the minute, though I'm sure it has happened.

Probably the worse thing that happens in this sort of situation is when you're playing an online game and you get phonecalls from stupid companies or people at the door who want you change electric suppliers etc.

If I'm playing a story driven game I will tend to use headphones to make sure to stay immersed.

I made the mistake of playing Twilight Princess one day while my ex-fiancé sat on the couch next to me, doing homework for her Masters courses. As I got to the Ice Temple, she decided it was time to have a "serious" talk that she knew would lead to a huge argument. I haven't been able to play Twilight Princess since, as every time I do, I have 'Nam style flashbacks to that moment and all the emotions that came with it.

Similar situation with Fallout 3. I was playing it one Sunday afternoon when my roommate walked in, told me he'd gotten a new job 3 hours away(which I didn't even know he'd applied for), and that he was moving out in 2 weeks, so I had 2 weeks to find somewhere else to live. In the second week of November, when all apartment complexes are already filled for the month and mostly, the holiday season. Luckily, I've been able to move past that and have since put almost 100 hours into Fallout 3.

After dying about 600 times in VVVVV in "Veni, Vidi, Vici" I finally got through the course and landed on the wrong side.

Then when I finally got it, I accidentally saved over that file, and had to do it again.

The original Diablo on dial up and my parents not putting the * in the phone number. When using dial up the phone would ring (no fast busy for the caller) if anyone called disconnecting the internet/game. I would have to play it super late to avoid disconnecting, causing me to be super tired in school the next day. :(

I played Journey without realizing the center channel speaker had been unpluged. I thought something was off but figured it was just some minimalist sound design or some other thing along those lines.

I still never heard the vocals to the song in the credits.

I can't even imagine how sour I would have been if that happened to me. It must have been horrible!

Playing Shadow of the Colossus in college. Beating Shadow of the Colossus in college.

Because it's simply an awesome game with amazing-looking battles, so I had like the whole dorm spontaneously gathered around me to watch the last couple colossi. It was pretty cool for while.

Then I get to the end and none of them know anything about the story, none of the context, some of them are the type of people who would probably skip the story altogether, given the chance...so there are all these people around me talking loudly and laughing and yelling "IS THAT A BABY? HAHA LOOK IT HAS A PENIS!"

Only thing that comes to mind was the awesome ending scene with the concert of Superbrothers Sword and Sworcery, the wife decided was a great time to relive some 90s memories and sing along to Backstreet Boys or whatever.

My brothers thought they would be funny and sold all my cars in GTA 2, bought new cars, and sold them until i was left with some shitty minivan and no money.

I flipped out and they said don't worry, you'll be fine.

they then forgot to back up the save. I was properly screwed.

Your dad was just teaching you life lessons. Work before play.

That never stopped my folks back in the day. There may have been, two? Three? Games during gens 3, 4, or 5, where I did my chores and homework FIRST and didn't have them barge-assing into my room with some "just cuz" thing. So much for youthful responsibility.

If I sound bitter it happened alot. :P

I may be the exception but that hardly happens to me for one specific reason. I can't stand anything like that and will go through length to avoid it. So when I was young I did all my chores, homework etc BEFORE playing video games and would tell my parents to not distrub me except maybe if the house was on fire etc.

Even today, when I play games with emphasis on story (e.g. Mass Effect, Bioshock Infinte) and I don't want to get disturbed, I play offline, turn the phone off and will not answer the door. My friends and family have come to accept this quirky habbit of mine even though they still think its strange. For me it is part of the ritual of playing a great game.

Edit: Oh and all my friends know what would happen if anyone spoiled anything game related to me EVER. (I don't know what would happen, but I'd be pretty upset, I guess)

Some idiot spoiled the ending of Halo 4 in the name of a thread in gametrailers.
Also in TLoU,
one of the latests combat arenas, where there are a lot of soldiers and you just need to sneak through a door, I had to retry that part for like an hour because the parth wasn't clear
. It spoiled the mood of the game.

fortunately never had an amazing moment ruined that I can recall...

I did, however, ruin DMC's cheesy ass ending for one of my college suite-mates. He was really into the game and the story. He's playing it and I'm watching, so it gets to the "FILL YOUR DARK SOUL WITH LIIIIIIIIIIIIGHT" scene and not only do I start laughing hysterically, but I ask him if he's actually crying.

He yelled at me to get out of the room and pretty much avoided me the rest of the semester.
I didn't mean to be an ass, but holy shit that scene was hilarious and I think he was actually crying, lol.

I was playing Shadow of the Colossus, and a particularly emotional part
I had just lost Agro, and I was furiously determined to kill the final boss
and my roomate's dick friend, who was over to play D&D in the basement, walked through the living room on the way to the kitchen to get a soda and just started interjecting like crazy. WOW WHAT'S THIS, WHO'S THAT, WHY DOES YOUR GUY LOOK ALL BEAT UP, WHAT'S WRONG WITH THE FRAMERATE, OH LOOK AT THAT

First time I played Pokemon Red, I was a kid, and sank countless hours into it. Had the Master Ball, went through Victory Road, and saved it as I was ready to fight the Elite Four. The next day, my older brother stayed home from school sick, and when I got home, he'd taken my game to play (yes, he owned Pokemon Blue already), beaten the Elite Four and finished the game, then went to the Unknown Dungeon and caught Mewtwo, using the Master Ball.

I was slightly miffed, to say the least.

Bedroom getting decorated so was allowed to play my ps1 in the living room on the big tv. Playing FFVII and just completed the final boss.

cut scene enters... Boom power cut...
then a day later same point my sister comes in and switches tv over causes fight and tv gets turned off...

then went on holiday for two weeks but managed it the day i came back. But by then the moment was ruined

Hah, I just beat Journey yesterday for the first time as well.

I had the sand skiing part ruined for me because of that gif. im not mad about it or anything tho.

I had two that I particularly remember:

-Pokemon Red: Little sister erasing my save file :(

-Metal Gear Solid 2: Power shortage in the ending sequence... I had to watch the fucking thing all over again...

This is a minor one, but TES: Oblivion - Everyone had been going on about that moment early in the game when you first step out of the sewers and see the landscape and...WOW!...Just WOW!

So when I started my game and made my way out of the sewers...it was night. It was dark. Starry sky, but gray, colorless fields and hills...no "WOW!" Maybe I dawdled along too much in the sewers, and everyone else came outside in the daytime. Loved the game, though.

Ouch. These two sound especially painful. My condolences! Erased save files from little siblings is one of my worst fears.

Resident Evil Revelations. Took the PS3 to the parents house a few months aog to play the game with my brother. I haven't played the game by myself so we played it in little chunks every time I went to visit. We beat the game and credits start rolling. At that exact moment, my Mom enters home saying their car got stuck two blocks away from home and it won't start. I had to go out and push the car all the way home. When I finally return, one of my other brothers tells me there was a scene after the credits.

FFIV: PSP froze during the ending cutscene. I couldn't even save the completed game.

World of Warcraft. That game single handedly destroyed m enjoyment of gaming. I absolutely loved that game, and put thousands of hours towards it. After I stopped playing I started to splurge buying different games trying to get that fix. Nothing ever was able to fill that gap. Any games I buy now it seems I don't even put more than 5 hours in. Probably won't get GTA5 nor PS4, even though I have PS4 preordered for now.

Over here in britain, MGS2 was released in march 2002, long after it was released in NA.

So there were magazine covers heavily featuring Raiden, pictures of Big Shell etc.

There was no big surprise, no big reveal. MGS2's raison d'etre was rendered entirely meaningless.

Also, slightly off-topic, but i'm glad there is no longer a huge disparity between worldwide release dates.

*yes I'm well aware of Wonderful 101*

Persona 4.

Bitches and whores.

That's what I got from looking at P4 hentai.

Still, it was great and there's so much than just knowing
Adachi is the bad guy. Had no idea there was another final boss or that Nanako would come back.

3 years ago with FFVII and a certain death. I was only a few hours into the game. I loved listening to the music on YT. Related videos be damned.

MGS4 is my fault. I didn't have a PS3 at that time so in my impatient fury I watched a whole Big Boss playthrough on YT and read the story on MGS Wikia. I finally played it when PS3 Slim was released.

Some dick on Twitter spoiled Heavy Rain for me and a bunch of others by just searching for tweets talking about it and replying with that

Luckily it just confirmed my suspicions early

Oh, another one. I was reading the FF Wiki looking for some info about FFIX earlier this year. I entered the forums.

One of the topics was called
RIP Vivi
.

WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT. WHY.

OH GOD I JUST HIGHLIGHTED THIS OUT OF MUSCLE MEMORY NOOOOO

I spent a weekend playing the first Silent Hill on ps2, but I didn't have a ps1 memory card...so I just the system on for several days. I stopped for the day with only about 20 or so minutes left of the game, and the next morning I walk into the game room to finish it and my brother is playing Fucking Madden and quit my game....

Never to this day have I picked it up again and tried to play it, for the butthurt of that memory still haunts me.

For the record, the game
makes no mention of Vivi actually dying.
It's just kind of strongly hinted at.

The first time I got to the ending of Metal Gear Solid my Dad for some reason started going crazy about doing the dishes.

"But Dad just give me like 10 min-"

"GO DO THE DISHES NOW"

Had to leave the game going and go do them. I could faintly hear the ending going in the other room as I did them....

Started my save over from Metal Gear Rex and beat it again to see the ending. But BOY did that kill the mood.
If only you knew about thee disc tray open method.

I liked the disparity there was a mystique about Japan or America getting stuff before us. I remember playing MGS3 in LA 3 months before it came out at home.

As for MGS2 I was lucky that it wasn't spoiled for me. My parents must've not got me any gaming mags around it's launch.

damn some spoilers here haha I don't know if this counts but the voice acting killed for me most of the emotional parts of the first Baten Kaitos, the game was good but it had some horrible voice acting

Not a game, but I had the ending to The Usual Suspects ruined thanks to an off-hand comment from an employee that I should watch it before I watch
Scary Movie.

Watched the spoilered movie above and didn't think anything of it until I finally watched The Usual Suspects in college. Movie instantly ruined because I already knew how it turned out. Still haven't been able to sit through the movie.

Gaming related: dying right before the final boss in Parasite Eve when I wasn't able to save the game due to a faulty memory card.
It was the part where you are getting chased and can't let the thing chasing you touch you or it's insta-death.
Also, had a friend who had a save right before the final boss in FFVII and his younger brother ended up deleting it.

I had the entire story of Halo Reach spoiled for me.
My friend downloaded a leaked version weeks before release and he just started talking about all the big campaign moments one day.

He also told me about the whole
Red, Blue or Green endings of Mass Effect 3
.
My expectations were lowered so much that the ending didn't even phase me when I saw it for myself. I honestly thanked him for that one.

My wife coming to bitch about the drama at her job during the last hour of The Last of Us.

SHUT UP HONEY (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻

My PS3 decided to die during the opening of Dead Space 2. No the cinematic, but during the first few minutes of gameplay.

Shame, because that was a pretty crazy opening.

First thing that I remember having spoiled for me was who Sheik was in Ocarina of Time, which people had posted online a bit before the game's release.

Of course, now the Smash Bros. games give that "reveal" away to everyone, it's not a big deal anymore. At the time though, it kind of sucked.
