All the Pokemon playable so far are very rare. They ain't all that generic. Generic Pokemon would be like the common birds, bugs, Ratatas, etc

I remember some posters on this very forum saying they were very disappointed that Brawl's roster wasn't that huge in response to those giant fake roster images. :lol
Going beyond that, Pokémon is just as much about the anime and merchandising as it is about the games. It's the only series in Smash Bros. that could be considered a true multimedia franchise, and so the character selections aren't necessarily going to be completely relevant to the games.
