Valve announces SteamOS

Steam is still a mess, the service itself is decent but the client is an archaic mess.

I wouldn't go as far as archaic mess, but its certainly not as good as it could/should be - Considering how little optimization they've given it over the years I am a bit worried at how much they'll optimize SteamOS over the years.

I'm talking general speed of the client etc, not them simply adding more and more features - I'd love Valve to work on this so the client loads faster and the general store page runs faster (and I've love to not need to use like 30% of my CPU simply browsing my games list).

Valve doesn't necessarily need HL3 on consoles. They're not EA or Activision; they think about the future. What better way to promote your new OS than to make the most anticipated FPS of all time exclusive to it?

Putting aside that last part (I'm pretty sure whatever CoD came out last is the "most anticipated FPS of all time"), why would Valve promote their OS? The OS isn't a product, it's a method to promote their service, which lets them make money by selling people games. Purposely selling less software to promote something they give away free would make no sense.

if chrome is on it and if league of legends is on it and they got some support for devs to move certain games over like call of duty ghosts i would just hop on board. generic printer and scanner driver etc. I use gimp more than photoshop anyway. word processing and such can be done through chrome and now skype video can be done through outlook.com i wouldnt have a need for windows...

oh yes and amd and nvidia solid driver support.

Chrome and Skype are already available for Linux, so yeah, more than likely they will end up on SteamOS in some shape or form. There's been quite a bit of begging for a League of Legends client for Linux/ Riot games did recently release a Mac client over the last few months, so who knows... But I don;t expect them to release their game on Steam.

Its been speculated that

Valve specifically said that there are no game announcements this week.

Damn.

Probably right on the assumption that it will be:

SteamOS
Controller... or possibly a developers tool kit for porting between platforms
Steambox

Source 3?

Female TF2 models?

I want to see a female version of the Heavy, and I want her to be named Olga.

Valve could've just kept this in their back pocket in the event that Microsoft abandons the desktop. SteamOS would look a whole lot more useful on that day, but Windows isn't dead yet.

so you suggest they wait until windows is completely dead as a platform before launching and gaining support for their own all OS?

Do you wait for your professor to ask for the homework before you start it?

Amazing! I've wanted this for so long.

This streaming is the important one for me!
If they can get it to work well then I can't get rid of my biggish MCPC and go for a smaller NUC or something similar.

I'll finally be able to maintain just 1 high end PC rather than 2 mids.

Okay, C'mon GAF.

We need to get upto about 190 pages before I can look at the comments and scream... "It's over NINE THOUSAAAAAAND!!!"

C'mon, I'm looking forward to it.

valve already spent all their money and good will on this

when it fails they will sink the entire west coast with them

I don't think is going to be that bad. I do think that chasing the desktop/enthusiasts crowd is not a winning proposition nowadays. People want ubiquitous and untethered computing that's mobile and efficient, that's an area of growth not this.

Don't know if anyone addressed this yet, but are we going to get a Steam Media Center, or maybe have XBMC work?

When I visited Valve over the summer, they had a bunch of printed out shots of media features integrated into big picture mode (album audio views/video). Playing local media seems pretty straight forward, I'm more curious as to how them implementing media services work.

Blizzard is releasing a Linux game this year as well, presumably Hearthstone.

What I want to know is what the TV with the planet on it is for. What is it going to be a trailer for, the SteamOS? The controller? The Steambox? A new game? Some or all of the above?

Gaben built an operating system. Gaben built a digital distribution platform. Gaben built an operating system.

All of this has happened before. All of this will happen again.

Nice, I love trying out new OS.

Im getting sick of the windows looks, but still prefer its advanced functionaility over Macs.

Wasnt it only this year that being able to choose an alternate install directory was added to the non-beta client? That feels fairly archaic. But I agree even beyond a lack of basic features the client itself is poorly optimised, to the point where using the web interface (especially with Enhanced Steam) is a superior experience

Pretty sure Gabe's talk at Linuxcon said that Valve's total company revenue was up 76% Y/Y. I think both Apple and Google would be envious of this. Mainstream growth is in mobile sure, but Valve caters to a passionate niche (very well) that isn't afraid to spend money on things they like. Not exactly a bad position to be in.

Not really... Since we are currently in a gaming transition as far as consoles are concerned, this is actually the perfect time to release the SteamOS and SteamBox. SteamOS is an OS primarily focused on the living room, so Valve is releasing it at the time when the biggest competitors for gaming in the living room are transitioning to new hardware. In addition, Valve can also build up the library for SteamOS through encouraging third-parties on Steam to support it and consolidate support around the SteamOS for PC Gaming.

So it's not meant to replace Windows as a proper OS then, and acts more as a Live OS on top of it for streaming?

If that is the case, I doubt I'll get much use out of it, as I don't comfy couch my pc gaming as of yet.

Is it me or steam is just trying to emulate nVidia by offering a still not announced device running the SteamOS to stream games from your windows PC into that "PC,device, steam box or what ever" in the living room + TV ?!?!?!

For now. Valve seems intent on getting devs to port their games so that it can stand on its own.

Kind of but not really. It's trying to bridge a gap between two desktop OSes instead of running a mobile OS while streaming desktop games.

????????

My laptop from 2009 that has a core 2 duo (P8700, a Penryn-3M architecture released in March 2008) runs Dark Souls.

I'm sorry for saying this, I really am.

But let's assume that you have some tech savy but the other person is an nincompoop and has two antivirus progs running which in fact are viruses themselves. Tons of shit installed and never ever formated/defraged or uninstalled a program but just force deleted them so the registry is still cluttered with crap.

Actually I'm sad but this is a reality. Many many youngsters today actually suck donkey droppings when it comes to computers.
Their parents identify them as tech geniuses because they spend so much time on it. But ask them to build a PC? No way, ask them to switch os? Nope. Tell them to format and reinstall? Nope.

Forced my twelve year old niece to install crunchbag and config it before I bought her a rig. And I forced her to assemble and take apart both a laptop and desktop. Sure she needed help translating the English but she managed.

When she was 16 I forced her to unlock a nexus7, install a Cm10 all through adb commands and wrecked it on purpose before I bought her a tablet.
And now, this 17 year old is acting tech support for ALL the "data nerds" in her class. Yeah I call a duck a duck and I call these "data nerds" for lazy gamers.

And no I'm not crazy I just demand that she knows his to fix her toys before I give them to her. Next year we're moving onto cars.

I am confused. Wasn't big picture the steam os? What makes this different?

Big Picture Mode is a fullscreen, TV friendly version of Steam for existing PCs running existing operating systems.

This is a new OS built around Steam, and will presumably launch on some new hardware that was also built to run it.

I got it! The final announcement will be VR head wear....

Oh damn, I was ready beaten...

I'm gonna use that streaming function a lot once I move and I love the idea of a gaming Linux system. I really hope they get support from devs on this.

Is Steam a killer app that will sell an OS? Would people be willing to migrate to it? Chose it above the other options? This is something else and the accomplishments in other areas don't correlate with this new endeavor.
