The end of valve as we know it. I don't think that they are going to succeed with this endeavor, but I've been wrong before. Good luck Valve.
Steam is still a mess, the service itself is decent but the client is an archaic mess.
Valve doesn't necessarily need HL3 on consoles. They're not EA or Activision; they think about the future. What better way to promote your new OS than to make the most anticipated FPS of all time exclusive to it?
I understand Valve's need to brand its new product as SteamOS, but wonder why they didn't name it GLADOS

if chrome is on it and if league of legends is on it and they got some support for devs to move certain games over like call of duty ghosts i would just hop on board. generic printer and scanner driver etc. I use gimp more than photoshop anyway. word processing and such can be done through chrome and now skype video can be done through outlook.com i wouldnt have a need for windows...
oh yes and amd and nvidia solid driver support.
Its been speculated that
Valve specifically said that there are no game announcements this week.
Source 3?
Female TF2 models?
O+O looks like a controller.
Valve could've just kept this in their back pocket in the event that Microsoft abandons the desktop. SteamOS would look a whole lot more useful on that day, but Windows isn't dead yet.
Amazing! I've wanted this for so long.
It looks more like a download than anything.God I hope O+O is a game announcement... It's been too long since you've had one of those, Valve.
I'm surprised I didn't think of this
Pachter twitter
valve already spent all their money and good will on this
when it fails they will sink the entire west coast with them

If it's Linux, then it will support EXT3/4, XFS and all the other file systems that are popular for Linux installations. But Linux has no problem reading or writing to NTFS and ExFAT.
Don't know if anyone addressed this yet, but are we going to get a Steam Media Center, or maybe have XBMC work?

When I visited Valve over the summer, they had a bunch of printed out shots of media features integrated into big picture mode (album audio views/video). Playing local media seems pretty straight forward, I'm more curious as to how them implementing media services work.
I wouldn't go as far as archaic mess, but its certainly not as good as it could/should be - Considering how little optimization they've given it over the years I am a bit worried at how much they'll optimize SteamOS over the years.
I'm talking general speed of the client etc, not them simply adding more and more features - I'd love Valve to work on this so the client loads faster and the general store page runs faster (and I've love to not need to use like 30% of my CPU simply browsing my games list).
GLaDOS already is an OS used by Aperture Science... jeez.
I don't think is going to be that bad. I do think that chasing the desktop/enthusiasts crowd is not a winning proposition nowadays. People want ubiquitous and untethered computing that's mobile and efficient, that's an area of growth not this.

"I know I should be excited, but I don't know why. What does a SteamOS mean for PC Gamers?"
For the desktop PC gamers with no interest in a living room box? Not a whole lot.
and Valve as a parent company has all the rights to use it
Maybe O+O stands for an emoticon depicting glasses, which means Gordon Freeman which means HL3?
Gaben built an operating system. Gaben built a digital distribution platform. Gaben built an operating system.
So it's not meant to replace Windows as a proper OS then, and acts more as a Live OS on top of it for streaming?
If that is the case, I doubt I'll get much use out of it, as I don't comfy couch my pc gaming as of yet.
Is it me or steam is just trying to emulate nVidia by offering a still not announced device running the SteamOS to stream games from your windows PC into that "PC,device, steam box or what ever" in the living room + TV ?!?!?!
Now that you say it...

I am confused. Wasn't big picture the steam os? What makes this different?

My laptop from 2009 that has a core 2 duo (P8700, a Penryn-3M architecture released in March 2008) runs Dark Souls.

All of this has happened before. All of this will happen again.

Pretty sure Gabe's talk at Linuxcon said that Valve's total company revenue was up 76% Y/Y. I think both Apple and Google would be envious of this. Mainstream growth is in mobile sure, but Valve caters to a passionate niche (very well) that isn't afraid to spend money on things they like. Not exactly a bad position to be in.
