Valve announces SteamOS

I hope they actually do have something to show for the controller; not just: "something that fits the needs of everyone, and you can still use a keyboard too! More info coming soon".

The later.

Welp. My hype just went to zero. I want a Steam Box for the Steam library and the benefits of a cheaper, optimized living room gaming device with better specs than my gaming laptop. I guess I could install Windows on it, but that defeats the whole purpose. I don't see how this is going to be relevant until or unless Linux becomes a standard gaming platform OS for PC devs. As it sounds, the Steam Machine kind of sounds like a Nividia Shield to me right now.

This may be a dumb question, and maybe I'm just missing the point, but I'm going to ask this anyway in the hopes that one of you in this thread can enlighten me.

Okay, so about SteamOS and the forthcoming SteamMachine...

So, I already have a gaming PC that I play my Steam games on. And so does everyone else who plays games on Steam. Occasionally I even hook it up to my 61" Toshiba HDTV to play on. So then, what exactly does this SteamOS do for us? I mean I'm not giving up Win7 by any means, is that what most of you are planning to do? What about all of the other games that aren't on Steam? Are you planning to dual boot operating systems or something? Or are most people planning on building a whole new PC just to run SteamOS on? And if you did, what would be the benefits of doing so over simply running normal Steam on Windows?

And with the SteamMachine, are people hoping it will run better than their normal gaming PC's? Is this mainly targeted towards people with old weak gaming computers, or is it expected to run better than a current "high end" PC?

I think both the SteamOS and SteamMachine are neat announcements and all, but I'm failing to see what all the hooplah is about. I'm perfectly happy with the current Steam application and gaming with how Steam now works.
Maybe I'm just not getting the big picture or something? Does it have some more profound impact for gaming on Steam down the road?

Am I the only one who thinks that the sphere is changing color and there's something inside? http://store.steampowered.com/livingroom/

Aight, I'm not crazy.

I'm expecting a yearly SteamBox spec.

Valve won't build a machine, they'll spec out a baseline and you can build your own accordingly, or buy one pre-built from your regular PC builders.

An annual spec keeps the PC tech rolling nicely, and gives devs a baseline to aim for. Maybe we'll get a general "2.5 TF 2014, 3.2 TF 2015, 4.0 TF 2016", giving us 3 years specs in advance. Helps devs, helps consumers plan ahead.

Too much hype build up for nothing actually shown. Some early hardware and a demo of the Steam OS would've be nice. Yeah it got people talking which I'm sure was the intention but it's kind of aggravating to have such a build up for a simple confirmation of everything we already knew was happening.

I'm feeling third announcement has to be either source 2 or a game, since brackets seems to mean hardware and circles software

or maybe something really disappointing like more programs

Sorry but Windows PCs > SteamOS/SteamMachines.

why would i want to limit myself to just steam games? i still play league of legends, blizzard games, final fantasy xiv, and have games on other services (origin, amazon, gog, uplay)

I just dont see why people would want a Steam Machine.

Gaming on linux have to start somewhere. I'm sure that if there is a demand, other developers and publishers will consider porting their games on linux. It won't happen overnight, but this is a great step in this direction.

they are making sure that if MS screws up Windows, there is something left for rest of us. Nothing too complicated really.

Since you can install windows on steam machines (it's a fucking pc!) and dual boot, I don't see how that is relevant...

Hmm. I wonder. On OSX, games ported for Mac using a Wine Wrapper, are shrugged at. At best they seem to have a 20% hit in performance.

I wonder if it will be the same with SteamOS. After all, if you could just somehow magically turned software designed with DirectX into OpenCL, wouldn't Apple have done it a long time ago?

You assume Apple cares, when in fact they are notorious in the industry for not caring about gaming on OSX and it's predecessors.

Wow, I would have had expected this thread to advance at a much more rapid pace. I guess this announcement was met with disappointment.

I'm still not sure what it is lol. Is it gonna be like 1 of those linux distro with support for apps like open office and such or is it gonna be a stream box with the interface dedicated to media streaming ala roku box.

It's both:

"Entertainment is not a one-size-fits-all world. We want you to be able to choose the hardware that makes sense for you."

From Valve

A powerful new category of living-room hardware is on the horizon.

Entertainment is not a one-size-fits-all world. We want you to be able to choose the hardware that makes sense for you, so we are working with multiple partners to bring a variety of Steam gaming machines to market during 2014, all of them running SteamOS.

I've been reading the several threads on the new SteamOS and Machine. There are a few people that, for what ever reason, feel threatened by this announcement while others are complaining that it makes no sense for them to use this product.

It's seems like they make it pretty plain and simple that this option for living room gaming will make sense for some, and and it wont work for others.

Steam isn't trying to limit its market, its broadening it.

For one, you aren't the target demographic. Valve is focusing on broadening the market into people who have never been PC gamers before.

If there is enough demand then the other companies will do ports of their clients and games to Linux. Blizzard is porting a game to Linux this year for example.

And of course, you can always dual boot Windows on any Steam Machine if you so desire.

What exactly were you expecting? Magic fairy dust? Computers need OSes to run. Software runs on OSes. Games run on Windows. If you want a system that runs the full Steam library, it needs to be a Windows machine. I'm not clear which part of this you thought this announcement would fix.

It is about time for me to update my PC and I am excited about SteamOS. A free OS for gaming that isn't filled with bloat/malware, OMG ITZ HEAVAN!!!!!

SteamOS will save me at least $100, so I don't have to buy Windows 7.

SteamOS itself is not a replacement for Windows, it's a linux environment tailored to gaming (presumably as an attempt preserve games as Windows focuses on other things that have nothing to do with game or detract from gaming). You can reuse your previous windows license.

ITT: Choice is bad.

Some how it seems that SteamOS existence means Win/Steam combo is going away or threatened. Or if you don't have a use for it nobody else will.

I expect whatever makes SteamOS unique will be back ported to other Linux distros. Hopefully in the future this means if I buy a game, Steam will unlock both Linux and windows variants for me. Play them on whatever OS I happen to have installed and allow me to stream my windows only content. Huge bonus points if Steam allows me to steam any game I own regardless of where I bought it. Since the technology doesn't rely on it being built into the game it's at least technically possible even if not supported.

I don't want to use Vista again, and yes... it could replace windows since most of my PC stuff is Linux compatible. Being part of the revolution to free PC culture from M$ stranglehold is a bonus.

Why the hell are you still on Vista?

Also, drop the dollar sign. Just a tip.

Steamplay means once you activate a game on Steam you can play on whatever system has compatibility for that game. Linux, Windows, Mac, Android, whatever.

Why? It means applications. Your web browser is an application.
It must be one of those pointless semantic battles a lot of people on GAF seem so fond of.
You know, like "I hate the word gamer", "The term 'hardcore' is dumb" or "MOBA as a genre name doesn't make sense to me".

I hate the work "program" because older people use it interchangeably with other words.

"Application" doesn't have that 90's wannabe hacker sound to it.

I hope you only wanna play a handful of indie games, Valve games and not too many (if any) AAA titles. And dont mind losing out compatability on about 98% of games you already own.

Cause otherwise you are in for some dissapointment.
