Actually, Ridley was in Smash first, he was in the background of Planet Zebes in 64. He's been in every Smash game so far.

Back in 2007, there was a Nintendo Fall Conference on Oct.10th. Sonic was revealed and they showed a new trailer. I think it was the first new gameplay footage after e3.
It is fun indeed.
1.History is not going to repeat itself here
2.The direct is going to be about games upcoming this year
3.smash bros. gameplay has been revealed several times prior to sonics reveal.

I'd love to get my hopes up, but given Toon Link's reveal only a couple of days ago, I can't really imagine they'd need to do any revealing tomorrow.

Toon Link was confirmed not much ago and this direct is for games (and maybe updates) releasing this year they are not going to reveal anything tomorrow...

Is it just me or are the visual effects on those attacks a bit... much?
I love the effects in most cases, but those big purple shapes seem like they'd get in the way given how hectic Smash Bros. is. Like, I honestly couldn't see what was going on between the two Links because of it.
Maybe it's just the Spin Attack that has such an intrusive one. Maybe I'm silly and they're fine.

I believe Luigi was revealed in a Nintendo Direct dedicated to "games releasing this year" as well. I'm not expecting Smash Bros. news since we just got Toon Link, but it's technically still possible.

Hard to say without seeing it in motion, some of the effects might only be for a split second.
I guessed this is your first post. After a few months you will expect Nintendo to buy Apple, Microsoft and Sony on every Nintendo Direct. And of course a Ridley&Kraid reveal.

Did the reveal trailer bother you?
Because the effects are there as well. It's actually not much at all when the game is in motion.
Previous games also had these effects, except they were mostly red/green iirc.

This reminds me of Brawl's character reveals. It was going at one every week or so there for a bit, then slowed to an absolute crawl for months. I remember getting Diddy confirmed and before we even realized it there was Pokemon Trainer, then Dedede, Sonic, and so on.
Hopefully they pace it a lot better. They still have a huge amount of vets to show, so they have plenty of content this time around, and the next one doesn't seem as far out as Brawl did for some reason.

I think the safest characters to predict in this are the originals, as I don't see any of them being removed.
This means I fully expect Jigglypuff back.
I really hope we get at least one more Kid Icarus character, as there were so many good ones created for Uprising.
