I still have not watched any episode-- I thought it was a 13 episode series so I planned to watch it all in one marathon. However, animesuki has the episode number at 70+... !!!
So I have a question for the Monster fans: how is it doing in Japan ratings-wise? I don't want to get hooked on it then weep as it gets cancelled on episode 30. Especially with the manga complete I think.
Last I heard it was set for 78 episodes or something like that. It's scheduled to run continously for a year and a half.
Anyway, I was going to make this thread cause I just spotted all those Soldats releases just now. I've been wondering what they've been doing this whole time, but the fact that they released them all at once to make up for lost time was awesome of them.
Especially since I'm leaving the country in less than two days. Perfect timing.
I've been following Totan's releases, which have been quite good considering their usual speed.. For some reason they're a bit behind now, so I'll check out Soldats' 8 and 9.
Yeah ToTan's are garbage. A show like Monster is very intricate and getting the best possible quality really is necessary. It's not as big of a deal on a kids show like Naruto to get the 0-day type releases, but on something difficult like Monster is worth the wait.

Garbage? Have you actually watched their releases? Aside from maybe the first ep, where there were a few grammatical errors, their subs have been quite good. After watching Soldats' ep 8 & 9 (ep 9 is fantastic, btw - this series kicks ass) I didn't think the translation was any better or worse.
Dez: Anyone with a strong knowledge of Japanese would tell you otherwise. Not to mention that all of the new groups suck when compared to the older ones (Soldats, Anime-Fansubs, AnimeFactory, Anime-Kissaten, etc.)
sp0rks: Do you really think any of the groups doing Monster havent read the manga? It's not exactly the type of series that is going to be hugely popular unfortunately since it has no fanservice and is fairly slow-paced -- the only reason I can think of a group even doing it is because the crew likes the series. I know the fact that the timer of the Soldats releases has all of what's out in France of the series (I think around 13 volumes or so) and the entire Soldats crew has read all the scanlations and/or raws (translator) otherwise. It's a veritable Urasawa love fest in the distro room!
I was very close to quitting this show. I usually only give an anime about 3 eps at most to grab me and if it doesn't I stop. I mainly kept watching because all of the priase it got on this forum for its story quality. After watching Episode 5 I was glad I kept watching. It seems to be on track now and finnaly has my complete interest.

I'm with you on this, Totan isn't any better or worse than Soldats after watching 8 and 9. And I agree 9 is just awesome. My favorite so far, really brought a tear to my eye. :\
But anyways, moving from Totan to Soldat was a breeze, I still understood the story and all, so I don't see how it could be garbage. I fthat were the case I'm sure I'd would have been very confused into the episodes, but even the flashbacks in 8 were basically the same in Totan, so the quality seems to be relatively the same.
Glossary of medical terms eh? i will have to check this out.
Basically, it's about a highly praised surgeon (Dr. Tenma) who saves the life of a young boy who has been shot in the head. He does this because after not operating on an old man (instead he operated on an opera singer who actually came in AFTER the old man only because his directors told him to. Politics and all. There's much more to it, but I'd just watch the anime) he takes complete blame of the death of the old man after his wife falls to pieces in front of him. He is given the decision again, a well known political figure... or a young boy who came in first? He goes with the boy because it would be the rightful thing to do, and the mayor dies do to a poor operation by another surgeon.
Basically, murders occur within the ranks of hospital, and Tenma finds out there is more to the boy he saved than he know before the operation. I don't want to spoil much, so I'd watch the series anyway and give it a try.
Whether or not it is understandable has nothing to do with the quality of the release. You could understand the subs (well, most of the time) in AnimeJunkies' releases but no one (well except Konex) would disagree that they were a terrible quality group. On Monster, the only two groups worth even considering are Soldats and Anime-Kraze -- for the record though, Anime-Keep is only slightly better than ToTan.

Well pfft, and here I was looking at fansubs for only their subs. Anything else is not relevant to me. If I can understand the story just fine, it's okay. Some people can just be a bit picky though, which is understandable I guess. I only really get annoyed of the subs are completely off, but I haven't seen that as the case yet with the subs I have watched out of Totan, Keep, and Soldats.
Now if you're referring to more minor things, than yes Soldats is a better choice, but they really don't have that great of an impact on the story.

Just finished 10, slower episode, but still good I thought. I like how they're straying from the plot but at the same time keeping us informed with the main plot itself. 78 episodes though? I don't see how they'll span the series that long. This still feels like a short anime.
Is there any significance to the ending? Mainly the Monster, not really the song. I'm guessing it's supposed to be a kid as a monster and just a play on the whole deal with Johan and his childhood. I just didn't want to miss anything that may be neat to know.
Re: the ending, read at your own risk for spoilers (fairly minor, but spoilers nonetheless)
Later in the series, we learn the origins of the name Johan and whatnot. It comes from a picture book by an author named Franz Bonaparte as I recall (not all that important) and that's how the monster looks.

Just finished 12 and bothered to read this. I figured it had some significance especially after noticing the ending change for the current episode. (The farmer/soldier(?) and the monster) perhaps in relation to the orphanage? I'm not really good at this sort of thing.
Hehe, I just watched Episode 12 today. I've been watching Monster for maybe 2-3 weeks now. It is indeed sad that many people are going to miss out on it just because it isn't just pure action and fight scenes. Monster really builds itself up and gets the drama and suspense going. The manga ran for so many years that we have a lot more Monster to go. If I remember correctly the plan is to have 72 episodes.
Inspector Lunge is one of my favorite characters, he is VERY creepy but at the same time he gives off this vibe that he already has the situation under control. And that typing thing he does with his hand is a nice little quirk.
Hate to revive such a dead topic, but did anyone watch 15? Just released... and it's a bit mind blowing.
2nd Hitler? Wow, the creation of Johan certainly became a huge deal in one episode. While we were hinted during the episode about the orphanage and Dieter... but I didn't think it would be quite as huge on a national scale. Episode went by WAY too fast, felt only 5 minutes long. I'm love it so far though, the series has gotten very very deep. Next we're getting info from General Wolf so I can only guess what we're going to find out about the orphange and Johan.
I still can't quite figure how they're going to spread this series over so many episodes. Though I've got no clue about the future storyline so who knows.
Yeah, saw episode 15 last night, and I love this series. As soon as one mystery is revealed, it leads to another. And I agree it will be interesting to see what will become of this series, since there are going to be so many episodes.
I don't know if I can wait a whole year for the anime to finish. The manga is only a few hours of downloading away. Damn it I should've waited for more episodes to be out and then watch it! I want more Monster!!!!
Anyway I think episodes 17 and 18 were good. In episode 18
Anna gives out her name as Anna Leibert to the police. Now we all know our buddy lunge and that bitch eva are looking for tenma and they will most likely know about a suspicious asian doctor in that factory. When lunge looks into the case files he'll find Anna Leiber in one of the witnesses... Do you guys think he might start believing tenma? Right now he thinks the twins just disappeared years ago but discovering the girl is alive and was in the same place as tenma will turn things upside down. Especially since she denies knowledge of tenma and he KNOWS that tenma knows her.
I think the biggest development in the latest episodes though was in 16 where we find out
that Johan is-- believe it or not-- asking for help. He has a monster inside of him. That just takes the story into a whole new direction. The most important new change is that killing Johan is now just "saving" him. I'm disappointed with this because one of Monsters' themes is the question on whether all humans are equal and whether "monsters" deserve to live. Tenma refuses to help the terrorist in earlier episodes but then decides that since they're human he'll help. However, he still intends to kill Johan and Im talking about before knowing that there are "two Johans." This anime was presenting some tough issues but now with the "two johans" twist it kinda sidesteps those..
Still a great anime though. More people should watch it.
Oh and did you guys notice Dieter's voice is done by the actress that does naruto? On another off-topic note I hate seeing pictures of the voice actors in the ANN encyclopedia.. they just pop up in my head when seeing the characters they voice in anime.
edit: I knew it was a women that does naruto's voice... It was a typo.

I don't know if it's really as simple as just killing Johan. Wouldn't that kill the Johan who wants help too, since there are two of them? It would be strange of a guy like Tenma and Johan's own sister to just shoot Johan down after finding out he has two personalites. Wouldn't it make more sense to try and save him? Shooting him wouldn't exactly save him, it would only, you know, kill him.
So I believe the theme of "who has the right to live" will still be in there.
And BTW, isn't the actor doing the voice for Naruto actually an actress? I recall it being a woman doing his voice, but maybe I'm wrong.

I was really shocked that Johan had this monster inside him, it makes me think that Tenma and Nina are going to have a hard time actually killing him. But this does explain why he explained how to kill someone to Nina right before she shot him in the head, when they were children. That must have been the good in Johan trying to destroy the evil, knowing he had to die to get rid of it.
I don't care what happens from here on out, but we NEED more Inspector Lunge. That man is just so awesome, but really creepy at the same time.
The way he just went on hunting down Tenma after his family left him. And then when they were gone, he just replaced them by working harder on the Tenma case to help his career. And that little typing technique was a great way to introduce him.
This show just takes so many twists, and the scale of the problem get so big as the series goes on. Awesome anime, I'm sticking with this baby until the end. I believe it has a 75 episode run.
I do enjoy Monster's take on a "plot twist" in just about every episode. It really keeps the show at the height of interest and it is really hard for me to not anticipate another episode of Monster. Gosh I love this show.
and although I'd say it was a damn good manga/anime... it's ending was somewhat disappointing. Almost anti-climactic. Even tho it was supposed to be the climax and built up to it like a normal climax...
yeah if there's one thing I noticed about Monster, is that it starts *really* slow, and is likely to cause some people to stop watching if they didn't know beforehand of the hype. It's not a big deal in the manga, but they translated the manga almost perfectly into the anime.
Heh that's what I thought as well when a friend asked me how the last chapter of the manga ended, and all I could say was "typical Urasawa style". Luckily Urasawa and co. decided to pump out Another Monster, the novel in which adds a few extra things that happened throughout the series. It ties up a few loose holes and the like - I wonder if they might add a dialogue short or something at the very end of Monster about the important parts in Another Monster.
It's by Anime-Kraze btw and not Soldats. I only watched Soldats' subs but A-K is also one of the best groups so I'll d/l this episode. I might re-watch it when soldats releases 19 just for comparison. It looks like there won't be just one group that is the "fastest" for Monster so I guess I'll be switching between A-K and Soldats.
Viz might have acquired the Monster manga.... This also means they could get the anime too. Although that could take a long time considering they still have not licensed the Naruto anime even though they have the manga and it's doing very well.
