I thought Namco was only doing game balance?

Namco is programming, had some kind of hand with the artstyle(they got the guy who designs soul calibur art on it) and a few other stuff, they're for the most part code monkies but I do think they have input on how the game is developed.

People, do yourself a favor. Don't wait for update tonight because we wouldn't get any character reveal because Sakurai is too busy with his Pokemon X/Y.

I still can't believe the reason Sakurai is cutting Subspace Emissary is due to the fact the cut scenes were uploaded online spoiling things for some people...

A part of me still wants to think that that was just an excuse to cover for the fact that SE got such negative feedback from the community.

Sakurai: *cancels feature* (laughs)

The Sakurai giveth and the Sakurai taketh away

I think the problem I have with Fox's model (aside from the gross art), along with some of the other models, is diminishing returns. They've stuck so closely to Brawl's design, reducing the semi-realistic texturing and colour palette, that it really doesn't look much better. You can see where they've spent their poly increase, and it's on little details that only show up with the camera close (like his visor, and the ridges on his gloves). At a first and second glance, and from afar, it looks borderline exactly the same as Brawl. Would have been nice if they'd done something/anything to improve his fur rendering. You look at shots like this and you can see they've added a bump map, but it gives the model a clay look instead of actual fuzz.

Though I do think they're probably fighting a pretty low ceiling in terms of complex shaders if they're indeed aiming for 1920x1080 @ 60fps, especially considering this is Smash Bros, where any one frame could be filled to the brim with particle effects.

Yeah, out of all the characters shown so far, I think Fox is the one that kind of sticks out too much at times. Fox doesn't look as stylized as he should be for the game. Wonder if they'll improve him by the time the game comes out.

Yea. Some of the close ups have been harsh on characters like DK and Fox. Hell, even some of the better looking characters lose their roundness. But I'm glad with that compromise if the image quality ends up being excellent. 1080p and 60fps Smash, hell yes.

I agree that Fox has gone unchaged, but there are definitely enough changes aesthetically that separate this from Brawl imo. Namely, Boweser, Peach, Samus, and Sonic. Characters like Link and Fox got the short end of the stick though.

EDIT: Misread EatChildrens post, realized he was just talking about Fox and not the games art in general.

Exactly. It really does just look like Brawl running in Dolphin with a couple of touch ups here and there.

Not that there's anything wrong with that. They'll probably get the game out quicker that way, too. And it'll look gorgeous with that image quality. Brawl was a very pretty game held back by the Wii, so just rendering that in HD is a huge improvement imo.

But they need to fix Fox. Seriously. Give him his Star Fox 64/Melee look as an alternate costume. Sakurai pls ; _ ;

Sakurai likes to go with the last major game. Apparently, he doesn't count SF64 3D, so we're still with the Command Fox. We should blame Nintendo for not making a new one.

Well, I do kinda mean it for most of the characters. As Anth0ny noted it really does, at times, look like Brawl HD, with stylistic changes (brighter colour palette, reduced realistic texturing). The texture resolution is higher (and thus cleaner), and the poly count has been upped, it's just a bit diminishing returns at times. Some of the models in Brawl looked so good as-is that you can only smooth a hat so far to the point where additional smoothing isn't very noticable. Like the knuckle ridges on Fox's goves; smoother and far higher poly than Brawl, but you're not going to notice that in average gameplay.

Smash 4's biggest leap is the lighting, which naturally improves the overall look of everything, along with the addition of bump/normal maps and other fluff to add complexity to models and environments.

But yeah, aiming for 1920x1080 @ 60fps isn't going to give the team a lot of technical wiggle room in making the game look truly leaps and bounds ahead of Brawl. Resolution aside, of course.

I now own a WiiU (I can't use it until Christmas) and I'm buying four pro controllers for Smash/MK/3D Mario/2D Mario...
when are we expecting this to come out? I'm super hyped!

All we know is 2014. From the looks of it, Mario Kart will be the Wii U's big game for the first half of the year, so it seems about right that Smash would be their big game for the holiday season... so November before Black Friday.

Unless it gets delayed, of course ^_^

Actually, I'm surprised by Nintendo's work with lighting overall coming from Wii which barely had any sense of it. Yeah, there were shadows, gradients, lights, etc but they looked like well made cartoons. Now, all of their games so far look more natural and appealing. I'm talking for myself but I think lighting gives them more depth, dynamism and makes them look more visually atractive.
NintendoLand, Pikmin, Smash,SM3DW, X and Mario Kart 8 all of them have some amazing lighting going on.
I know I don't. If it is true, it's the worst reason ever.
Just like -Horizon- said, they probably were too scared by the SE's negative feedback to the point they just ditched the whole idea.

Thanks, I was hoping Q1/Q2 as it looked pretty far through development at E3, oh well, I guess I can wait.

I'm in the same boat as you (waiting Til Christmas to open mine) did you get the limited edition zelda console too?

I don't think I'll jump in right away and get multiple pro controllers, Mario 3D world doesn't seem like it's need it and MK8 and smash won't be out for a while. Although it seems to be the consensus here, I really don't think smash will be released fall/winter/holiday 2014 but rather spring or summer; I think Nintendo wants and needs wii U sales and fast.

Indeed, the Zelda bundle seemed the best way to do it.
I bought pro controllers because I wanted at least one, my friends come round frequently (some people play with friends online almost exclusively) and a local super market is selling them for £20, which is ~half what they are elsewhere.

I just got a Japanese Mewtwo with the OT: Sakurai via Wonder Trade.

Its name? "Oct. 18 REVEALED"

IT'S HAPPENING!
