I hate it when people run jokes into the ground. It ruins it and just isn't even funny anymore, just annoying.

"Please understand"

"Have you seen Titanfall?"

etc...

Quoting a huge OP verbatim, especially if it's on the first page. It's kind of implicit that you're replying to the OP by default. If you're reply pertains to a specific point, just quote that part!

I've said it before, but it's worth saying again... posting just a picture in a "list" thread without text to tell you what game, thing, whatever it is from should be a bannable offense.

Also, if you're like the the 10th one to quote a reply and be all "10/10!!!" you should give pause as it's been done too many times already and fills a thread with things that aren't furthering conversation. Some restraint would be nice.

"Mental gymnastics."

It's just a way to either say,
"What you said is complex, but I can't find any holes in it, so I'll just use its complexity as an easy dismissal."
or
"I disagree with you, but you seem formidable, so I'm not going to bother."

If I was a mod I'd instaban anybody who doesn't know the correct use of its and it's. GAF population would be decimated.

Plus people who begin every sentence with the word 'so'. Also annoying IRL.

"Lock if old"
God shut uuuuuuup. Just create your stupid thread and if it is old then it will probably be locked.

Yes, this one. No need to tell the mods what they already know to do.

It won't save you.

I sort of get irked with 'oh my god look a lawyer somewhere said something sexist or talked about rape negatively or something'

and then we all fall over ourselves for 30 pages showing everyone how accepting we are of all cultures and lifestyles and educating everyone on how rape culture is bad and then lament the state of the world and so on and so forth.

It gets to crazy levels, feels false as fuck and I dunno, I get a really lame vibe from it all. I think i'm not explaining this well. Sometimes this forum feels like a slightly weaker version of that idiot riskychris.

Annoying stuff:

"/thread"

"this"

"."

"So much salt ..."

"... butthurt..."

"... fanboy..."

yeah, I mostly hang out over on gaming side

That's really not what that phrase means. It's probably not a great phrase to use in any case, but what it means is that you're going to great lengths, putting your mind to great exercise as you might say, to reach a particular conclusion.

Smart people can be particularly prone to this.

Yes, I understand what it's supposed to mean, in theory. Whenever it is used, however, it is almost never used like this: "You're performing mental gymnastics here; you say you support X and disapprove Y, when they're really pretty much the same thing. You're distinguishing X and Y by pointing out Z, but that's not really material to the logic you're using to justify your support of X."

Instead, we get as a response to a very large, complicated post with lots of logical intricacies: "The mental gymnastics... SMH." It means nothing, it illuminates nothing. It's just a simple way to dismiss things without addressing them, and it's abused in this manner all the time.

EDIT: After doing a search, it seems more people use it in a proper manner than I'd seen before. They still don't justify it very much, and I still think it's a cheap-shot term with no value other than making the other person seem worse; if they're really performing mental gymnastics, you should be able to point out inconsistencies without resorting to pejorative verbs/nouns. But it does seem my experience with encountering the term is not ubiquitous.

Yeah I think I get you, Sometimes this place is just way too PC, that it's not even worth going into a thread to read up on the "other" side of an argument. this also could be the result of western culture being the majority of GAF, thus having the most influence.

Yup, I've noticed the general hostility and passive aggression getting worse. Much of it seems to stem from insecurity. Maybe I'm just reading too many threads, though.

When ever I see a thread that has gone up to 3 or 4 pages, before I click on it and read the title. I think think "how could they possibly argue over this" or "what are they arguing about now...?". I click and find incoherent arguments.

Any variant of: LONG RANT AHEAD

Warning us about your screed is thoughtful, but wholly not necessary. We can decide for ourselves if your post is too long, too boring, or too personal to read through.

Instead of apologizing for your post beforehand, why not make sure you follow these simple rules?:

1. Be brief.
2. Eschew ranting.

While i have no doubt that the mods are perfectly capable of knowing what has to happen to a thread i always saw it as you Kindly asking a mod to close the thread if necessary .
nothing more .nothing less.

Unnecessary ? perhaps but a bit of kindness never hurt anyone.

I guess anyone who lays down a very overused/completely obvious joke as his "First!" post, and the resulting deluge of people telling him it was comedy gold, first reply man!

Posters who are only capable of stating their opinions and not of actually having a conversation about something. It's fine to have an opinion, but after a while it's not fun to talk to someone who only wants to say "well I like X, and I think everything should be X."

Conversations involve give and take. You have to listen (read) what they say and not be dismissive. Going by the way many post around here their in person conversations must be constant streams of "I like X" and "I don't like Y."

I know I'm in the wrong fucking place to look for that stuff, but it still annoys me.

I usually interpret "Lock if old" as "I didn't use the search function".

To be fair. i had a few cases where i searched if nobody had made a thread about a certain issue and couldn't find any.

Then after making the thread suddenly being told said thread had already been made and i couldn't find it because it got buried underneath other threads.

Oh yea no worries, I've done the same as well. Search a couple of keywords for thread titles, don't get results, post a thread, then find out it's a duplicate. It happens to the best of us. :)

Wait, Derrick liked RE6?! WHAAAAAAT!!!!
