RUMOUR: Xbox One version of Call of Duty: Ghosts is 720p, PS4 version is 1080p?

I went to visit my ex-girlfriends family for Thanksgiving a few years back. It was there that I realized not all gamers are like us GAF gamers and that most casual gamers are, in fact, retarded. I shit you not, I walked in on her cousings playing COD Black Ops on PS3 with the bundled composite cables - running 480p on their 1080p capable 70+ inch LCD. They had been playing that way for over a year! I came back the next day with a spare HDMI cable and set them up right.

Moral of the story? We are the minority GAF. The sad truth is that the majority are impulse buying casual gaming blasphemers. #TruthFacts

This.

They don't know and don't care. I've had many situations like this with friends and exes.

Still, its interesting to us.

How long till IGN updates their media player with the new quality settings?

I1m in tears LOL! :D

It's perfectly possible the Xbox One version is 720p and they decided to go with PS4 at 720p to avoid just such a controversy, in which case we should be attacking Infinity Ward for gimping one version for the other.
That definitely is a worry and if developers/publishers will frequently hold themselves back for that it'll make a good case once again for exclusivity, though I think the policies of each platform holder can be enough for that (just look at how much Microsoft wants DLC to be versus Sony or Valve.) Though I imagine at this point it'll require a PS2-esque curbstomp to justify that, and without the power angle I can see XB1 being a very hard console to rationalize developing for.

Nothing in this world is objectively better than anything else. Everything is subjective. People have different wants and needs.
This is patently untrue. You could make that point about absolute capital T truths, but we have metrics which are considered "objective" under certain circumstances. If you accept certain axioms, with qualifications, one could use the word "better" rather freely. Though, of course, not in the case of that poster.

This should not be news, we all knew PS4 is more powerful than xboned.

MS is turning out to be lying their way into next gen. I guess it is no surprise and expect from them after what they tried to pull on us this next gen.

Were some Gaffers not warning others against expectations of 1080p and 60fps as standard this coming generation of consoles.

That's something that goes above my head but and it's something for Crytek to answer in detail, but they've made their position clear in that it was a design decision and I see no reason to doubt them or call them liars just yet...

It can still be "technical design" (and probably is). Running at 900p frees more resources that can be used for other effects. In the end, the goal (for graphics) is to have a pretty game, not to run at a given resolution. If the tradeoff gives a better picture, then it's good design.

still no answer

Some disgusting bullshit.

I don't understand PR. Does it actually work to bullshit people like this? I know that on GAF, people enjoy Sony and Valve's PR style, and are frustrated by Nintendo and MS's double talk, but I don't know if that's just us, or if the wider public do find the MS style preferable.

I'm really looking forward to the first 5 (6?) way IQ comparisons of multiplats. Way more entertaining than the console launch titles!

I was really looking forward to seeing Watch Dogs for this reason. Perhaps this or Battlefield 4 will do though.

It works for people who aren't as connected into the industry as we are. Which I suppose is exactly the point :(

The CEO of Sony must have gone to some temple and made some kind of promise or sacrifice. Sony's PS4 is being handed the advantage since day one of these new console campaigns.

Too bad he didn't also ask for world peace at the same time.

A perfect storm: MS has a lot of work to do in the PR department on all their products. . Plus the new CEO coming on. I also heard on This Week In Tech that MS employees are asking around and applying for jobs with other companies.
I can see MS stock down to $20/share in the next 6 months.

This won't make a difference in the end, only GAF cares about resolution.

Also, only GAF cares about used games and having to stay online. Oh, and only GAF cares about the Kinect watching you!

For details or rankings? Because let me spoil it for you

PC
PS4
Xbox One
Xbox 360
PS3

And there probably won't be a Wii U version -- so there.

I'm just saying it doesn't matter for how the end user sees the game, they're very relevant for discussion, just not for the point which I was trying to make, which is, you can't say the Xbox One is being "left behind" when Ryse arguably looks just as good as KZ:SF. When these technical specs start causing a huge gulf in graphics, then we should start talking about them in this context.
But that IS a huge gulf lmao!!!

You're agreeing that to achieve similar results in all other "categories" that developers have to go to 900p or even 720p to get there!...that's HUGE...dropping the res of the PS4 game would in turn allow you to crank up the eye candy...raising the res of the Xbone game would force you to tone everything down...this is Crytek for Christ's sake we are talking about here...working exclusively with a closed box of hardware...and they had to make resolution compromises to achieve similar results to a PS4 game pushing over 600,000 more pixels!

First - I don't know the resolution. I don't have more sophisticated tools than anyone else. I watch the game on a nice TV with the XBO set to 1080p for every game, there is no way for me to know what's native vs. upscaled unless I'm told.

That's confirmation right there. MS are hoping they can get away with upscaling while simultaneously claiming their console is as powerful a the console that does native 1080p. It's a difficult tightrope to walk but the average consumer will never know of our conversations. Twitter would be the best way of educating the masses, so get to it Gaf!

That's something that goes above my head but and it's something for Crytek to answer in detail, but they've made their position clear in that it was a design decision and I see no reason to doubt them or call them liars just yet...

Its not about calling them liars. They chose to have a lower resolution to pull off more effects.

That is a valid decision, but I don't think Crytek were implying that they thought 900p is better than 1080p.

They didn't lie they just hope people don't know it's the same. They said the design choice was to increase effects and in order to do so they had to decrease resolution. That design choice only had to be made due to hardware limitations. Why do people think these things are mutually exclusive, it's really simple actually.

As someone who majored in PR, I'm ashamed to admit that this very same question continues to rack my brain. I figured the honest / humanisitc approach would work wonders, but it seems that most companies beg to differ. I'll let you know in a few years, after Ive tried the aforementioned in the field myself.

If it were a legitimate design decision, we would see the same in PC games. Where are the PC titles intentionally rendering at underscaled resolutions?

Crytek's position is that they want everyone to believe it's a design decision. Their sales partially depend on consumer perceptions of the XB1 in relation to its competitors, as nobody's getting one and planning on only ever owning Ryse. They're not going to say anything that make it seem inferior to the PS4 if they can help it.

And yet Crytek claim that hardware wasn't an issue, that they could have made the exact same game in 1080p, but they chose to make it 900p.

Yeah I'm gonna need a source for that. Crytek said 900p allows them to up shader quality compared to 1080p, and that 900p+hq shaders looks better for their game than 1080p+lesser quality shaders. It's quite stupid to say that if their game looks and runs identical in 900p and 1080p, they'd choose 900p, and I don't beleive for a second Crytek said that.

The outcomes are fairly clear, for the most part. I'm more interested in the details and disparity between some of the platforms. If I were to get any of these titles, PC is a clear choice for me.

This won't make a difference in the end, only GAF cares about resolution.

Nevertheless, all these little news stories slowly cumulate into a general "PS4 is more powerful than Xbox One" theme that even non-gaming media will pick-up and communicate to its readers/viewers. If you are neither tech-savvy nor a enthusiastic gamer and you are looking for a console to buy (for yourself or as a gift) before the holidays, you will get this simple message, and it will influence you.

This.

The core (excuse the expression) are the ones who set the mood, the change in mindshare this past gen was generated by the enthusiast and was passed on to the mainstream.

Let's say a multi-platform game for Xbox One and Playstation 4 has the exact same graphics options enabled but the Xbox One version runs at 720p and the Playstation 4 version runs at 1080p. It's easy for people to say "it doesn't matter", "I can't see the difference", and "I sit far enough from my TV anyway". It's all cool. I won't judge you. Now let's imagine the vast majority feel exactly like that. What would happen when multi-platform developers realize it and drop the Playstation 4 version's resolution to 720p and jack up the sliders to take advantage of the newly gained power. What would people say then?

Given that none of the developers I've asked will answer requests for the PS4's resolution, they are either uncertain, unwilling, or stalling until the last minute.

If they reveal PS4 resolution, they have to reveal Xbone resolution. They wouldn't do that if there's truly a discrepancy between the two.

Still amazes me that MS are in that position of having harder to develop for hardware and leads back to my point about the current having lost focus of why the OG and especially 360 were so well received.

I guess the complexity came from trying to do the best they could with the budget restrictions they had, the almost necessary esram inclusion due to the slow ddr3 being the most apparent example.

But my argument is that both Ryse and KZ:SF look amazing, and it's personal choice which looks best. You're too fixed to the technical details.

Why is it bullshit? Because it came from a Microsoft employee? Nothing he said there is wrong in the slightest. Well okay, I highly doubt Ghosts look amazing on any console, but the point stands.

We're all total assholes for wanting to get our monies worth and finally game at the full resolution of our expensive TV sets.

What a crazy way of seeing it, just crazy. You paid for every last pixel and anything less is just theft and gross, how dare any developer want to focus on something besides resolution.

Yes. The non answer is all I am getting. Which is why I am not buying anything until resolutions are officially confirmed. I am suspicious of EA.

Exactly. And Sony thought name recognition and player habit would overcome a 100-200 price difference but were proved wrong.

Why do people think history will not repeat itself here with the added the fact of a clear power difference? The parallels to the ps3 are seriously insane.
