RUMOUR: Xbox One version of Call of Duty: Ghosts is 720p, PS4 version is 1080p?

I see the thread has gone some places and some people are in flat out denial over this. It's best to just ignore threads like this if you're a diehard Xbone fan who can't take it.

There are more sources pointing to this being true than not so I would take this one pretty seriously vs your average rumor.
Aw but where would be the fun in that? ;P
I wanna more resolution bombs dropped this week. Get all your rumors out of the way guys. Show DICE some love as well, insiders.

If Rockstar choose to do the next GTA game on next-gen consoles, they'll be able to do all that and they'll achieve their goals easier on PS4 than on Xbone, with lower cost to the developer and the player. That's the disappointing part about how MS designed Xbone and if they want to convince players to pick up their box over the competition they will have to bring out some serious arguments, not wish that players overlook lower resolution.

You're absoloutely right.
The PS3 was weaker than the Xbox 360 though, did I still play GTAV on the PS3? Yes.
Did it still look good? Yes.
Was it still amazing, Yep!

People always always focus on the stupid little shit before a console launches and not the games. I know it because I was dopey enough to do this 8 years ago myself. After experiencing 2 full console gens now, I've learnt my lesson. This will be water under the bridge in less than 6 months.

If this was not true is there any reason why Microsoft would not have said so by now? Seems the silence is the confirmation.

i'm thinking the same thing. much like the silence was the confirmation in regards to the driveclub delay rumour.

no-one stands to gain from NOT saying the xbone version runs at 1080p. but everyone stands to gain from keeping silent if it is in fact 720p.

they either need to piss on this raging bonfire, or they need to be transparent and say it like it is, this silence just feels....dishonest.

They aren't all of the specs though, are they? and 50% more CU's doesn't make a 50% stronger GPU. Etc. Anyway, I've said all I need to say in this thread. We'll never all agree, and thats cool, discussion and differing opinions are good.

No you're right, it also has twice the rops (and twice the fillrate)

It's more than 50 percent faster at higher resolutions or with AA

Can we please not use photographs to compare resolutions? They're a sampling of a continuous signal. Graphics rendering isn't like that.

That aside, I find it really crazy that we're discussing whether 720p is 'OK'. For next-gen. In 2013. For a cross-generation game.

That's a farce. 1080p ought to be the minimum standard for early games on next-gen, not to mention port-me-ups. 12 months ago I'd have figured it'd be a given for all games well beyond that too.

In Pop-GAF parlance...I cannot.
There should be no defence for 720p in this generation. I honestly think it's laughable - no matter how good your game looks, IQ remains king. The final display output is a blurry, jaggy and pixelated mess (which low rendering resolutions contribute to), then what is the point?

This is just embarrassing MS. I love the XBOX and its my main gaming console, But this is just embarrassing . This is 2013 for crying out loud. If you were set for a 2014 launch you should have sticked to that. There is no reason to rush into a marked with a half product when your competitor is 100% ready.

People are not stupid anymore, Even the average joe knows about graphics, resolution, Etc.

You have rushed to launch the console this year because you were afraid of losing some marketshare, But what you don't understad is that you have already lost more by damaging the Xbox name. You have lost the marketshare and the future fans.

Any wise person at MS should have delayed the console the moment they saw the PS4 announcment. There is no reason for this suicide mission. The PS3 launched one year later and look how it turned out, There is just no shame in it.

Am sorry MS, Right now I gotta consider what's the best value for me. I am a big XBOX fan, I love the xbox and have been with it since the OG. But am also a gamer. And as a gamer I can't see myself paying more for an inferior product.

To bad MS, This is just to fucking bad.
Good post. It's how I'm feeling. So sad.
Getting both like every gen but it's looking like PS4 could be my go to.

I have to ask about this again, because nobody could answer last time. Given the weird jaggies seen so far, is it really 1920x1080, or is there some horizontal scaling going on? To me, 1080p means 1920x1080, but to PR, I'm guessing not necessarily.

We dont know until the final code gets out. It looks like Forza 5 runs at vertical res of 1080 pixels but could be horizontally cropped. It has serious aliasing but they dont look like scaling jaggies. DF will tell us soon if its native 1080p or not.

Your right, all xbox fans should leave any thread relating to xbox and its games so the Sony shills can continue to shit all over everything.

Sony shills? Dat Salt.

EDIT: hope you have a good source as calling someone a shill is a bannable offense.

This makes me sad and a little irritated towards MS. If the person(s) responsible for Xbox One's specs still works there, they don't need to be involved with anything MS makes again. What a huge fuckup by MS. I'm no fanboy, but I have preferred most of my gaming on Xbox and Xbox 360 due to the games looking or performing a little better. PS4 is getting all my love this upcoming gen. Good job alienating your core, MS.

you probably should have felt alienated when kinect came aboard.

I think it's amazing how people go out of their way (legitimatly buying) a weak "next gen" machine instead of buying the clearly superior one for 100bucks less. The argument "but it's the games" doesn't matter since you buy that new platform for only one reason, that is that it's more powerful than it's predecessor.

You must have really been amazed at how many people bought a PS2 throughout the course of its gen then.

And yes -- people do buy consoles since they are more powerful than what they currently have. They can still do that and/or be satisfied though without the new console being "#1 in power" within its respective gen.

What a load. So I'm supposed to buy a PS4 because it's more powerful and cheaper, even though the only game that interests me in the launch window is Resogun? And I'm supposed to ignore the weaker Xbone even though I'm super excited to play Killer Instinct, Dead Rising 3, Crimson Dragon, and Titanfall in that same window? Yeah, no thanks. I realize the PS4 hardware is the better value, but I'm looking for more than a next gen Netflix player.

This post is full of gold. He said next gen Netflix player #burn

Wow what a thread. It destroyed my productivity so far today. :D

mattrickps4on42yut.gif

Amazing.

Seeing how Killer Instinct, a 2.5D fighting game with two characters on the screen at once, can't hit 1080p/60fps on the Xbone, not surprising at all the CoD can't do it either.

Microsoft really botched the architecture of their box.

The only reason to respond officially if it the rumour isn't true.

If there's no response by the weekend from Activision assume it's the truth. MS would never let this go without damage control if it were false.

Actually, GTA V looks slightly better on PS3 than the 360. At least according to its Eurogamer comparison article.

"PS3 weaker than Xbox 360" is extremely debatable.

Yeah I mean I'm not very in tune with these things and wouldn't know one source from the next but there seems to be too much momentum behind the rumour and no one coming forward to deny it.

The main issue as of now is not only PS4 being more powerful but having a massive games advantage which some people try to down play.

There is no downplaying great games. If we could get past that then I would have less to contest.

And if you read the thread there are is some blatant comments trying to even downplay PSN. Something which is irrelevant but reminds me of arguments which end up with insults which have nothing to do with the original matter at hand

Yeah I mean I'm not very in tune with these things and wouldn't know one source from the next but there seems to be too much momentum behind the rumour and no one coming forward to deny it.

I only go by what I hear and it's strong but no one can really confirm yet.

Off to work. Another 20 100 post pages before I get home?

It is hilarious to watch the sides switch when it comes to the issue of multiplat technical differences. I'm not talking about the games themselves, but the arguments from each companies' supporters. The exact same arguments we've heard for the entire gen*, but coming from the opposite sides of the fence this time. Xbox fans using Playstation fan's testimonials about the differences being so small as to not matter and Playstation fans using those tried and tested rebuttals Xbox fans used against their own testimonials for years. Oh boy.

edit: and now we have PS fans saying how multiplats are the best way to determine power, and XB fans mentioning the exclusives instead. Hah. Love it.

*less so towards the end as PS3 dev became less of a minefield

Then there are the Xbox 360 fan that became PS4 fans who stayed consistent with their arguments, and simply go with the best console at the time.

*Incoming salty opinion*

To be honest, as someone who has an XOne pre-ordered with a sizeable quantity of games alongside it (Ghosts and Battlefield 4 being two of them) and has ridden the wave of negative and positive news that has followed the initial reveal, it's starting to become exhausting trying to stay positive now. It just seems to me that whenever the XOne begins to surround itself with a positive buzz, something, like this COD rumour, comes along and bursts the bubble. What's even more infuriating, is that no-one from Microsoft, or even Infinity Ward is attempting to tackle the issue head on.

Non-answers from Phil ('we don't know, because we aren't directly involved in the development') and Albert ('Activision will tell us when they want us to know') serve nothing other than to stir the rumour pot faster and instil even more frustration in those of us who are trying to believe Microsoft haven't produced a lemon. I don't believe for a second that you guys (Phil and Albert) don't know how the final build of Call of Duty will perform on final retail hardware. Considering the Call of Duty series is one of your flagship, third party titles, I doubt very much you guys sit at the sidelines oblivious to how the development of the game is coming along. Considering Microsoft are throwing some of their marketing weight behind the game, you will no doubt have close ties to the development process. And, I assume you will have XOne engineers going back and fourth to Infinity Ward's development team and helping them acclimatise themselves with the XOne hardware and SDK - Just like you have done with, albeit, first party published titles Dead Rising and, probably Ryse - so, you will no doubt be getting first hand, technical updates from those guys. So there is NO WAY Microsoft doesn't know how the game will perform.

Irritatingly, I sort of understand the PR approach they (MS) are taking and why they won't officially comment on this. Call of Duty isn't their product, so, probably for legal reasons, they won't make an official statement about it. So, instead, they dance around the issue. However, I'm sure they could try and at least drop a hint of 'I Wouldn't worry' or 'wait till this date and see for yourselves' to try and at least diffuse the situation a little bit instead of the non-answers they have provided thus far - assuming the rumour turns out to be false. Then we have the stance that Activision may take, assuming it's turns out to be true, then it will most certainly affect pre-orders of the XOne version. And, arguably, affect XOne pre-orders too. So, they would probably take the stance of 'lets say nothing' or the neutral 'we don't comment on rumours or speculation'. But if it's not, and I certainly hope this is the case, just come out and TELL US! Diffuse this shit storm.

Right now, in my eyes at least, the inaction and poor response so far by both Microsoft and Infinity Ward/Activision is seeding the idea deeper that the XOne is severely undercooked. Not to disrespect the dev team at Infinity ward, but if there was one game everyone expected to run @1080p and at 60fps on both XOne and PS4 it was the call of duty series. Now unless there is a legitimate reason for the Ghosts game to be running under par compared to the PS4 version, such as an immature SDK (potentially meaning the game 'could' be 1080p with more dev time and better tools), then it potentially means that we can expect future games to suffer the same treatment.

Now, I know for a fact that graphics + resolution doesn't equate to superior gameplay. But the rational gamer inside me does question my £430 purchase decision to buy a console which may be lame before it even exits the start line.

Microsoft NEED to react to this sooner rather than later.

Yeah If I was interested in buying the console the fact that there could be more negative news about the console coming out, and no one from Microsoft would ever be transparent about it would makes me wary of paying that high price for it.

You can argue about 1080p / 900p / 720p / upscale...blah...blah...blah. The truth is, RYSE, TitanFall, and Forza-5, all look excellent.

We all know that Forza-5 does 1080 @60 fps, so obviously the X1 is capable. There will be games of various resolutions in the beginning, but 1080p will definitely be the standard during the lifecycle of the console.

you probably should have felt alienated when kinect came aboard.

Nope. I saw it as their push to grab Wii's fickle casuals. I didn't expect MS to not make their 3rd Xbox as powerful as size/heat allowed. And I didn't think MS were dumb enough to force Kinect 2.0 in all SKUs at launch. But Kinect 2.0 being forced isn't my issue. I can throw that bullshit in the closet. My issue is that MS purposefully didn't target high-end specs.

The ps3 wasn't straight weaker though. Especially not to the tune of 500 jiggaflops weaker.

Lol it's true!

All I picture is a bunch of guys, exactly like the comic book guy from the simpsons, rubbing themselves with glee as they wait for the next xbox thread to troll.

I really dont understand. I think we all know the PS4 has the advantage but that doesn't make me not want the games and no matter how much half of you love Sony, nothing you say will make me want to play them less.

Xbone: 1.18 TF GPU (12 CUs) for games
Xbone: 768 Shaders
Xbone: 48 Texture units
Xbone: 16 ROPS
Xbone: 2 ACE/ 16 queues

PS4: 1.84TF GPU ( 18 CUs) for games + 56%
PS4: 1152 Shaders +50%
PS4: 72 Texture units +50%
PS4: 32 ROPS + 100%
PS4: 8 ACE/64 queues +400%

You haven't seen titanfall on xb1. And the rest of your post is silly.

Bottom line for me is that COD is one of the biggest games for Microsoft, they pump large sums of money into timed exclusives, all the xbox branded COD advertising etc, yet their version of the product is inferior. Can't be anything but damaging in my eyes.

People do buy a console just for COD and this might tip them away from the xbone

There are 1080p games this generation and even on Wii U.

What is your point?

Do We Even Know What Titanfall Looks Like On The Xbox One? Hasn't All Footage So Far Been PC Gameplay.

You must have really been amazed at how many people bought a PS2 throughout the course of its gen

But the PS2 launched well before the Gamecube and Xbox, not within a week of them. It was the most powerful console on the market for a good while before the competiton showed up, by which point the install base was well established. This is a completely different situation.

Ummmmmm EXACTLY the same shit went down the last 2 console generations - EXACTLY the same shit, utterly precisely this bullshit. What makes you think *this* one will be different?
(hint:
it won't be any different this time either
)

are you trying to tell me I imagined the reactions to every head to head comparison where the PS3 fell way behind the Xbox 360? Are you telling me Activision wasted the time and money they spent getting the PS3 versions of COD games up to the same resolution as the 360 ones? That resolution disparity got smaller and smaller until it vanished and it didn't happen magically.

Are you telling me no one cared that RE4 looked worse on PS2 than GameCube?

It's going to matter every time a major release is noticeably inferior on Xbox One. Just as it did between PS3 and 360. And, you know, always.

And yes -- people do buy consoles since they are more powerful than what they have. That fact is still possible though without the console being "#1 in power" within its respective gen.

The PS2 is arguably the greatest console that ever has and ever will be made...it broke the mold...it sold so well because it had overwhelming developer/publisher support....the Dreamcast was nearly DOA....and the GameCube and Xbox had no shot once the PS2 had gotten it's hold on the market...

There very well may never be another console like the PS2...it simply can't be used as a reference for anything to do with the upcoming generation

The point that people keep forgetting about Ryse is that we're only seeing 1:1 gifs and videos right now. It's only going to get worse from hereon in.

It's going to just look as unsharp as a 360 game once it's put on a 1080p TV.

The Xbone has a slightly more interesting launch lineup (but still pretty uninspiring if you're interested in new gameplay) but I feel that it's just a fart in the wind compared to what the Sony studios and technically accomplished third party developers will bring to the table once the generation is up and running without needing to worry about PS3 and 360 ports.

I have to ask about this again, because nobody could answer last time. Given the weird jaggies seen so far, is it really 1920x1080, or is there some horizontal scaling going on? To me, 1080p means 1920x1080, but to PR, I'm guessing not necessarily.

It's quite possible that they couldn't maintain 60fps by adding anti-aliasing. Going below native resolution costs you in terms of sharpness but then you can use the saved performance to apply anti aliasing.

Personally I still prefer native jaggies to scaling artifacts and blurriness at sub native res.

New types of AA edge detection filters like FXAA can reduce the aliasing at a lower cost to performance.

We all know that Forza-5 does 1080 @60 fps, so obviously the X1 is capable. There will be games of various resolutions in the beginning, but 1080p will definitely be the standard during the lifecycle of the console.

This is incredibly false. If the Xbox One can't manage full 1080p in multiplatform games with weak graphics (Call of Duty: Ghosts), then what makes you think they can do it later?

Besides Forza, there isn't a single confirmed 1080p retail game for the Xbox One. They are all either 900p or 720p, based on what information we know.

A couple Microsoft insiders have already said that 900p (or lower) will probably become the standard resolution for Xbox One games from this point moving forward.
