I just played God Eater 2 and Gungnir demos on the PSP (from the Japanese account).
God Eater 2 is a huge disappointment.
The game seemed a bit standard and not as good as I was led to believe based on all that God Eater Burst praise a while ago. The fights felt boring for the most part and the camera was annoying. The monsters didn't offer any variety, satisfaction or an interesting way of beating them. The one with the camera has to do with it being on the PSP, so that probably won't be an issue on the Vita. And granted, the missions are all very early and meant to be as tutorials. The fights will most likely be better than that. But I didn't have that with Soul Sacrifice and RO demos. I can't help having those first impressions with this demo.
Not sure how to say this, but the game is the kind of typical anime story/style that I don't dig at all. The story is way too serious for its own good with the whole Aragami and a world that's destroyed blabla. Then you have a bunch of crazy looking teenagers that have to look cool in cutscenes and with the way they talk just to reinforce that. The group who does the dirty work look like they just came from carnival and talk like they're in college, and the next moment it's all dead serious when Nana was about to get attacked by a monster and their 'mentor' teaching them the importance of their strength in order for them to awaken it. Then you have some of the female characters dressed like, I don't have the words for it, and act completely innocent. All the characters sound silly really.
One way or another, a lot of games made in Japan have those kind of stuff in them, so it doesn't sound different from others when it's described like that. Somehow this is way too much to tolerate. The mix of super serious while looking and acting that way is way too jarring for me. I like it when games go all out with what they're trying to do. If the game is meant to be all that serious and depressing, why not have better characters who can be more adults and dressed more appropriately? If the game is trying to be colourful and crazy in style, why not have a story that doesn't take itself this seriously? One that is more lighthearted and funny? Some games can have this mix of serious story and young characters that act silly, but they're usually not as strong about it and more convincing.
Now the good stuff is, the battle system. Even though it's pretty standard it still has unique elements to it, and I'm seeing huge potential in how good it can be. The whole switching between a gun and a sword, guns that have different bullets you can reload during fights, the special skills that you can learn and upgrade further, the different types of guns and swords, the speedy combat that controls good enough and most likely even perfect on the vita, etc. I can see why people might like the game because it can be very fun to play.
Not sure if I can ignore my annoyances with the game and enjoy it for the gameplay only *runs*
Now Gungnir, yum! That tasted good!
The description fits it, in that it is often compared with Final Fantasy Tactics. I think it can be quite a deep game, but it's light in comparison to FFT. And the timer and tactical points give the game its own twist, it makes it feel different because there are no turns. You can select any character you want, but there will be penalties if you don't wait for the timer to reach zero for each character. The environments also have a nice twist to them. Height plays a roll besides positioning. The story was pretty engaging for the way it was presented, even though it seems a bit cliché so far. The menus need getting used to, but they're okay.
The demo was pretty meaty. It lasted me over 2 hours and give me an idea what expect of the game. It's on sale now, might as well get it.
