Killzone Shadow Fall Review Thread

The whole staff has to favor anything Microsoft shits out because they paid for that bad documentary? That's a pretty black and white way of looking at the world.

Especially considering that's a drop int he bucket of funding.

In advertising, we can spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on things like Homepage Takeovers, which funds the site. Does that mean that because Activision bought a $500,000 campaign on IGN to push COD, or something similar, the site automatically has to give a positiive review?

Most of the money that MS paid went into production of said video. Most sites do something similar.

Just a tip for everyone who really wants to establish Gies/Polygon's bias against the PS4.

Look at their score for Killzone and where it falls in the distribution on metacritic. Then when Dead Rising 3 and Ryse are reviewed, compare Polygon's score (though it won't necessarily be Gies, so the comparison won't be perfect) to the rest of the distribution. If the Killzone score is at the low end and the X1 exclusive scores are at the high end of their review distribution, you can make the argument that Polygon is biased, though it's still not really sufficient data.

No you're right. It usually isn't fair to make accusations like this, but the case against Polygon's editorial standards is pretty extensive at this point. They are very consistently below the metacritic average for virtually every major Playstation release in the past 2 years. If there wasn't a pattern we'd see some variability but it's very consistent.

After seeing more reviews come in, it looks like this is actually shaping up to a be a solid title ( according to reviews )

I am seeing more and more high 8's.

Basically, this game is as beautiful as we have seen, the framerate is rock solid, but people are giving it shit for being " more of the same " shooter wise .. which basically can be tacked onto every single shooter over the past decade.

So basically, if you like shooters, you will like Killzone. Pretty simple.

But how can this Gies person's opinion be SO off of everyone elses? That seems pretty suspect.

It is like those guys who jump into amazon reviews just to put a 1 on the board to try and lower the average. Seems odd to have such a massively different opinion then everyone else in the room. But hey, its your opinion, so whatever. But how could a game in its 4th iteration, with a few other titles like the Vita title, be " more of the same " then freakin Call of Duty in its what ... 11th iteration ... exactly the same as all the others getting a 7.0? Odd indeed.

can we please ban Polygon from review threads? its ridiculous how sony games repeatedly are getting low scores from arthur gies.

Seriously. Reviews are always going to be subjective. Just because he doesn't like the game isn't a reason to ban mention of it.

never relished in it... he foamed at the mouth in over excitement

All jokes aside his review made no sense to those who know about the grey area between the ISA/Helghast

They are seriously funded by MS. This is not a joke or hyperbole. Google it.

I Googled it. Looks like they sponsored a documentary about the start of Polygon. I can't seem to find anything about any funding, constant or otherwise, after that point in time. So they were funded by Microsoft for a specific purpose two years ago and it was a one time thing.

I'd think that generous. Rare had made good games before PDZ.

Damn, Zia.

Depending on how well received the MP is by the community, I could see the next game scoring a lot better. KZ doesn't have the legacy to get by with a middling campaign

Just to be clear, was Arthur Gies the guy who was defending Microsoft's DRM policy?

He is also the guy that sent sensitive NDA'd information about Sony/PlayStation to Albert Penello on Twitter via DM.

I think the 5/10 is a bullshit score, some of the criticisms are just plain stupid (it's too hard waaaaaaaaah). Still doesn't mean Killzone isn't anything more than a shallow "look at the pretty graphics" experience like it was on PS3.

Graphically awesome and a technical showcase but pretty generic and bland FPS gameplay and story?

Yep, sounds like Killzone.

Just because something is extremely pretty doesn't make automatically a brilliant game. I enjoyed KZ2's SP and MP well enough, but the SP wasn't exactly perfecting the FPS experience nor doing anything more than bland and generic story lines with some horribly forced dialogue.

Why is everyone so concerned with the Single Player campaign? You'll spend the vast majority of your time in multi. That's what I want to hear about. If these reviews didn't have access to that portion of the game yet, then they shouldn't be publishing them yet.

Agreed. Slamming this game based on it's single player (which doesn't even sound all that bad for a shooter) is blatant incompetence.

Have to totally disagree here. KZ2 was one of the best shooters this past gen, 3 less so but 5/10 really?
Exactly, it's fun when people say "generic"... have they played it?
what's generic in KZ?
The setting is NOT
The AI is NOT (the best perhaps?)
The shooting feel is NOT
The weapons are NOT
But you walk, run and shoot... oh yeah, it's a FPS...

Has the OP abandoned hist post in favor of shinobi's post?

It gives a pretty skewed impression to anyone just looking at the scores and then posting, now that more reviews are coming in the average score is closer to 8.

It's so weird still reading all those comments about how the game seems to be a failure, as if Polygon and Kotaku are the most respected sites and their opinion is the one that set the tone for this thread.

Are you guys serious ? Ban them because you are mad that they gave a game you were hyped for, an average score ?

They are just out there for whatever reason. It just shits up review threads.

And Gies lives off this BS. Sure drive a ton of traffic to their site. Why not keep doing it? The goal is to get traffic to your site....

Not surprising - KZ has always been just sorta average. It's also a launch game. When was the last time there was a great launch game? Tekken Tag?

Soul Caliber and NFL2k would be great launch games after that Halo and Rouge Squadron would be great launch games. But yeah since then there has not been any great launch games. It is a shame not 1 big time launch game for this up coming generation on any platform. No excuse really everyone has had 3 extra years to have something great at launch.

Ehh. People seemed to think Perfect Dark Zero was an all round turd, sans maybe some multiplayer fun, and I don't remember the hype machine being all that great leading up to launch (seemed to be expected it wasn't going to be a gem). Going by the reviews Shadow Fall is still a good game with great production values. Killzone 2 scored incredibly well and that, for me personally, is a turd of a campaign (multiplayer is great though). So I dunno.

Perfect Dark Zero was far from being hyped as KZ:SF has been, mostly because it wasn't a graphic showcase or eye-candy, I still remember the old wallguy meme and (almost) everyone bashed it because of what was achieving tech-wise.

Eurogamer review has me concerned that they don't maintain the changes that they've advertised so far, but I will take away that they are at least making changes to the formula,

Which makes me lol at Polygon's comment. "That absence of meaningful evolution might be Killzone: Shadow Fall’s biggest sin."

Can we stop making every Review thread about a few specific reviews whom people disagree with?

I mean, I get it, I should hate Gies...

But who should I like? All I get from this thread is that Gies is scum of the earth, but I don't know anything about Killzone.

Just to be clear, was Arthur Gies the guy who was defending Microsoft's DRM policy?

I don't remember if he did or not, that was after he ran away from Gaf, but before the consoles were revealed (at least Xbox) he was on here always spinning every time there was a credible negative Xbox rumor.

It's weaker than PS4? Don't worry I've heard there's secret sauce that will make up the difference. At first everyone was like "well ok what is it?" and he could never give concrete details from his "sources". Eventually with thread after thread of him doing stuff like that people just stopped taking him seriously, and when the systems were actually revealed and his BS was proven to be...well, BS, he vanished from Gaf forever.

OK, this situation with Polygon is getting really ridiculous. For me they have ZERO credibility at this point and won't even bother to reading anything they put up.

to be perfectly honest...ive loved every single Killzone game ive played (yes even the first one)....im positive this game is going to be great

Dat Polygon review.

Could the guy sound more uncaring in the the video review? It's kind of core to the Killzone series that both sides consist of terrible people, but that's a complaint?

And dying a lot? Don't they have a difficulty mode for people who can't handle the heat?

Otherwise, it just seems like a pessimistic review. That's ok, I guess. I always figured there was a reason it wasn't Killzone 4, beyond trying to revamp the franchise.

lol, no. He is correct. The Killzone franchise is the definition of mediocrity. The average score for the Killzone franchise is 80% (as per Gamerankings). Killzone 4 looks to be another mediocre entry into a mediocre franchise. Killzone 2 is the exception, not the rule.

Thanks. I will get KZ4 because it looks amazing but those that were expecting for it to be a good game I honestly think they were in denial.

I've always loved it when people argue about review scores to games they haven't played.

To be honest, the scores for this and Knack are pretty much what I expected. Knack has looked pretty hit and miss since it was revealed, and Killzone games have always gotten these kinds of scores. It's not like the first 3 games were masterpieces. These are launch games, people. In a year we will forget they even existed.

sony for Christ sake just get naughty dog to make every game on ps4. guerrilla hasn't made a good game since killzone 2 and that was 5 years ago.

I will still buy shadow fall ans most likely enjoy it, but god damn if my hype just flatlined

5 years isn't that long considering they only made one game between that time.

Looks good, I only saw 3 bad scores in the OP. 7/10 is bad now? I don't get it. It's not nearly as bad as the reviews knack received, it makes me scared for the xbox one reviews.

Can we stop making every Review thread about a few specific reviews whom people disagree with?

I mean, I get it, I should hate Gies...

But who should I like? All I get from this thread is that Gies is scum of the earth, but I don't know anything about Killzone.

I'm just wondering how many people complaining about Gies have played the game.

Polygon are so far out of whack with everyone else it's hard not to start entertaining conspiracy theories, especially when Arthur Gies is well known to be close to MS and is not afraid to display his anti Sony bias.

I don't know why anyone bothers reading reviews anymore, surely you are the best judge of your own taste? just watch previews, check out media, try a demo etc and if it's something you are interested in buy it!

I never bother reading reviews because 99% of the time I never agree with most reviewers, I just go for games I know I will enjoy from what I have seen. can't say I remember the last time I bought a game and regretted it following this method.

Oh so you mean there is no actual evidence of this. Perhaps they just like the games more?

If you can't see what's in front of your own eyes I don't know what to tell you.

Anyway, back on topic. On the Kotaku review they gave it a No because of recycled ideas? So what do they give call of duty every year?

I purchased ghosts like I do every call of duty game every year. I'm just curious how they can justify that line of thinking.

Was it? I couldn't even tell you the premise of Killzone 2, it left no impression on me. Shadowfall's premise had me immediately interested.

Well, I never thought it was that cool, but people really do like the Killzone background fiction and the Visari speech that opens KZ2. I agree that Shadowfall's premise looked more interesting than that, but I'm still not surprised it didn't live up to it. Guerilla are tech wizards but I don't think they're very smart writers or storytellers, and that's fine, except that their game seems to place some emphasis on characters and dialogue.

Not surprising - KZ has always been just sorta average. It's also a launch game. When was the last time there was a great launch game? Tekken Tag?

KZ 2 is anything but average. It's one of the best fps I've ever played. But unfortunately, instead of keeping that winning formula, GG listened to the wrong people, the ones who don't care and never cared about the series. So, the series never developed an identity.

After kz2 it tried to go for a COD approach with kz3. It's mp was bad. It was only playable on the dlc maps which were maps from kz2. Now it tries to be a crysis.

These guys just don't listen.

The IGN video review made it seem pretty good....basically your standard shooter.

Dont know what everyone expected, 8's are pretty good..

GG need to stop with the tech demo's and start looking at the gaming mechanics first. For a dev team that are so technically gifted how hard can it be to just look at what made the first halo so great and copy those mechanics? Its been two years since KZ3.
