How does being a part of Smash Bros. history entitle Snake to special privileges? Roy is a part of Smash Bros. history and that didn't really help him. What's the difference? Does Nintendo have to secure the rights to Snake for every Smash game now just because he was in Brawl?

I wouldn't consider Snake to be in the same pool as Roy/Pichu/Dr. Mario, him being the first 3rd party character in Smash was a big event compared to a bunch of secret unlockable "clone" characters added last minute in Melee. And no I don't think he will be in every Smash game forever, fighting game rosters change all the time and I'm still surprised that Smash tries to stay consistent with its veteran fighters for the most part. Its this consistency with trying to maintain as many veterans as possible that makes me think that the development team will at least attempt to get Snake into the game, I just don't see them brushing off Konami/KojiPro because they haven't supported Nintendo hardware when Metal Gear has never been a Nintendo staple in the first place.

Yeah, but I don't see why that would be an issue. Sakurai has to secure the rights for every character (even Nintendo ones) each time he makes a new Smash Bros. I'm sure Konami/Kojima would be more than happy to let Snake return. Smash Bros. is a big series with a ton of visibility.

Snake is also more important than Roy in that he represents an entire franchise in Smash Bros. There was a Metal Gear character, stage, assist trophy, trophies, and stickers in Brawl, and it would be weird for all of that to just disappear.

I am sure that securing the rights to characters within a company are easier than securing the rights of a third party character. There is no doubt that Kojima would be happy to have Snake return, he is the only reason why Snake is even in the game in the first place.

Snake represents a franchise that has very little to do with Nintendo, and I still think that matters when we are talking about a game that everyone generally agrees is a celebration of the company. Snake disappearing from Brawl wouldn't be any weirder than Metal Gear games practically vanishing from Nintendo consoles after the NES.

There's a lot of characters I wouldn't mind getting in (e.g. Kamek, Dillon, Wonder Red, a WarioWare character, someone from Custom Robo, Advance Wars, etc.), but I don't specifically WANT them. And I'm well aware most of the people on the list above are very unlikely anyway.

Obviously Snake is a bigger character than Roy, I was just trying to illustrate that a characters Smash history doesn't guarantee anything. I think it is fair to say that Roy would be easier for Nintendo to secure than Snake, so I would much rather have the dev team work on bringing back veterans like Mewtwo, and implementing fan favorite characters that have yet to appear in Smash, instead of dragging along Konami's cash cow just for the sake of sequel consistency.
