We've seen only one in the past three weeks.
Surely Luigi and Jiggs will be unlocked from the start this time around.
SURELY
Aw man, Melee was the only Smash game I didn't know any of the secret characters when I first got it, so when the "Challenger Approaching" screen blared at me, there was genuine intrigue and excitement because I didn't know who to expect.
I say I'll try and refrain from spoiling myself when Smash 4 releases but I know I probably will, or have some dolt ruin it for me. Here's hoping Nintendo go water tight with Smash and its distribution, and we get an international release this time.
No matter what, I absolutely won't be spoiling the hidden characters for myself this time. I'm really hoping the American release isn't too far off from the Japanese release.
It'll be tough, but it'll be worth it. Playing Smash Bros. without knowing who will pop up sounds glorious.Good luck with that. There are too many people that would intend to spoil other people's surprises. That's why I'm hoping for international release date for all countries.
Piggy, you will get your due and it will be glorious. Besides in that past 3 weeks, didn't I show you the batch of 3DS shots? O was that alonger time?![]()
Oh no, I meant as in actual pic of the day with captions. Those 3DS shots just appeared then got removed from their FB page.
Ah. But does that really matter?
*hides*

Considering Sakurai was so desperate for a handheld Smash game, there's a sure lack of images.
That was physically impossible for me with Brawl considering the six month gap between the Japanese and PAL release. No matter what, I absolutely won't be spoiling the hidden characters for myself this time. I'm really hoping the American release isn't too far off from the Japanese release.
I know a few people who imported a Japanese Wii for that. Pretty crazy if you ask me.That was physically impossible for me with Brawl considering the six month gap between the Japanese and PAL release.
Good lord was that awful planning on NoE/NoAus's behalf.
May 2008 said:Nintendo Power: Were there any characters that you really wish you could have included, but werent able to for whatever reason?
Sakurai: Of course there were some characters that we couldnt include, but weve decided that were just not going to talk about them. [Laughs]
As far as design and planning and that sort of thing is concerned, I feel like anything Ive considered Im probably going to think about again when or if another game was to come out in the series, and so Id like to kind of keep a lid on that for now, and not disclose anything Ive been thinking about there.
July 2008 said:In an interview that features in the new issue of Official Nintendo Magazine (out on Friday), Sakurai said "It's taken over three years to make Brawl but I actually stopped trying to include new ideas early on in development.
"What happened in the next year and a half was that we distilled the game down, worked out which ideas we had time to include and which we didn't. Sadly, we had to trim out many great concepts just to keep within the time constraints. I had a lot more characters, for example.. but sadly I can't discuss which ones didn't make it."
June 2013 said:Kotaku: I know that you can't talk too much about the characters that will be in the next game, but for previous Smash Bros. games, have there ever been characters that you wanted to include but couldn't figure out a good mechanic for them, like a way to fit them into the game?
Sakurai: Yeah, there's been a lot of instances like that. For example, there are places where we planned to have a character but then implementing that character just didn't work out. Or we wanted to implement some character but there was too much overlap with other characters from the same title, and it didn't work out. Or there's places when I wanted to implement some character, but the image for how it works in the game just never comes to fruition.
Kotaku: Could you give some examples?
Sakurai: Unfortunately, I can't talk about it, because what will happen with those instances in the future is something that is still up for debate.
Well even a week or two gap would be bearable enough, but Smash is honestly the longest I can remember having to wait for a localized version of a game that was already in English. Was living in the US when it was probably worse for SNES/N64 games.Hope they treat this like Pokemon and do simultaneous releases.
I think at the very least Mewtwo and Dixie Kong are a done deal. Don't know enough about Plusle & Minun, but I guess it's an easy way to represent the generation between the Gen 1's and whatever gen Lucario's from. I'm indifferent towards Toon Zelda, though 'Toon Sheik' (fuck you this was probably Tetra, Smash wouldn't just 'invent' a character) would be cool.Is anyone else hoping all of the cut Brawl characters make their way into the new game? I really want Mewtwo, Plusle & Minun, Toon Zelda, and Dixie Kong. And, honestly, I think a Luigified Roy would be a much more exciting addition than Chrom. There are a bunch of comments from Sakurai that make me feel like he's seriously reconsidering the cut characters:

A Wolfified Roy would be even better. C:
I wasn't sure what to call it. Basically, Roy with reanimated attacks. On the official Melee site, Sakurai said the design concept behind Roy was "youth and inexperience." It was tough to get that across as a clone, but if his attacks were less graceful looking this time around it would really help set him apart from Marth.A Wolfified Roy would be even better. C:

Dixie doesn't have as many moves, Diddy took a lot from DK64.I'll be very surprised if Dixie Kong doesn't get in this time.
I'm sure if you Google it, you will find a picture on the web. I think there is an OT dedicated to that sort of thing.
I would like more wrestling moves for bowser.

inb4 Falcon counterargument
Her ponytail would dominate the majority of her move set; she could have hair sweeps, slaps, and pokes. She'd probably even utilize her ponytail in her grab. It's also worth considering that Sakurai invents fighting styles for a lot of the Smash Bros. characters. Pit's dual blade stuff was created specifically for Brawl because he didn't do a whole lot in the original Kid Icarus. All Zero Suit Samus does in Zero Mission is fire her blaster horizontally, so Sakurai gave her a plasma whip. It really doesn't matter how many attacks a character has in his or her source material so long as that character represents something unique -- in Dixie's case, that would be her hair. Nobody else in Smash Bros. attacks with their hair.Dixie doesn't have as many moves, Diddy took a lot from DK64.

It's likely been brought up here already, but Reggie has been confirmed to make an appearance at Spike's VGX this year (a rebranding of the VGAs). So it's fair to expect some sort of Nintendo-related announcement. Thinking about Spike's audience, Smash seems like a decent contender for what they'd present at such a show. So... get hype?
Snake would be the best character to showcase for that audience, especially since MGS V talk is almost a given. That'd be a good way to capitalize on the hype of the event. As for new characters... Maybe Bayonetta? Pair it with a Bayonetta 2 trailer for good measure?
reggie teabags geoff on stageBut I don't expect anything besides cringing.
I'd love to see a Smash Bros. announcement at VGX, but Sakurai has complete control over marketing and I don't know if he'd care enough about some American TV show to give them a character reveal. I still say it's more likely that Smash Bros. shows up in a Nintendo Direct next month.
