Here's the latest prototype, in the flesh:

I think it looks better than the 2006 concept. All it needs now is to be painted yellow with Z/28 stripes, and I can have Bumblebee on my driveway. :D
The car, meanwhile is about 65% towards being saleable and awesome.

Alas, the production model won't show up at the NAIAS for that reason...

2009 can't come soon enough. :D

That looks like a poorly designed snap-on model.
It's a test mule for a reason. :D
Here's a look at the test mule's interior. GM is warning that a lot of things are preproduction items, and will change, which is good, because it does scream preproduction, but... they kept the quad-gauge instruments! :D

Looks a lot like the new Mustangs and Chargers. Also really bulky. It's nice, but it looks really damn heavy.

I'm hoping that it weighs no more than the current V8 Mustang. (about 3500 pounds for the coupe) The independent rear suspension might add weight, but if it's not a porker, the Nissan GT-R is going on the "on notice" board. :D

God almighty that is ugly, even for pre-production. The layout of the dials at the shifter makes no fucking sense whatsoever. That steering wheel...ugh...please don't tell me that's going to make it to production...That dash looks like it's straight out of a shitty mid-eighties American car.

Like I said, it's preproduction, and things will change. The dials, though, should stay. It's like it's out of 1967. :D

You realize that's a shitty test mule picture and not representative of the final product which Lutz has repeatedly said will virtually identical to the concept. Not to mention that we won't know full specs and pricing on it till probably 2-3 months before it hits dealerships. Which isn't for quite a while.

Is the test mule automatic?

This is the thing that I don't get...this whole "heritage" business. There's a reason why those designs died and why we moved on: because they got old. Shitty design is shitty design and putting 4 gauges down where no sensible person would look during actual driving just makes no fucking sense. The overall "feel" of the interior - and I realize that it's pre-production - just doesn't match the crisp exterior. They need to go back to the drawing board on this one. How can they get it so right on one product - say the CTS - and get it oh so wrong on another?

Two words: Test. Mule. If it looks like crap, it's because it had the crap beaten out of it in real-world testing.

I think the test mule looks good now, so the final product will be all kinds of awesome. :D

I'm pretty certain that there will be a driver information center that has all that info for the four gauges within eyes view, like in the concept.

And if you don't get the heritage angle, just look at the current Ford Mustang, or the Mini Cooper, or the new Fiat 500 in Italy. Those things are selling pretty well.

(I think I need to take a moment...)
The 2008 Challengers are automatic only. You have to wait until the 2009 MY starts in the fall to get a stick.

I've determined that one of the reasons that the Asian carmakers are so successful - aside from the far superior build quality for a long stretch of time - is that they have no design heritage to hold them back. In essence, because most of them made big splashes in the US market relatively recently, they haven't been constrained by a particular "design language". I mean, look at the current gen. Camry...aside from the size, it's a radical design departure from previous editions. How about the Accord? Check out the Sonata and how shitty the previous version looked compared to the composed and understated look of the current. The Asian automakers have no qualms about moving design forward and ditching shitty ideas.

By company, every single American company came out on the losing side in 2007:

Code:
BMW Group 6.7% at 335,840 (2006: 313,603)
Chrysler Group –3.4% at 2,076,650 (2006: 2,142,505)
Ford Motor Co –12.1% at 2,572,599 (2006: 2,918,674)
General Motors –6.5% at 3,866,620 (2006: 4,124,645)
Honda America 2.5% at 1,551,542 (2006: 1,509,358)
Nissan North America 4.5% at 1,068,238 (2006: 1,019,249)
Toyota Motor Co. 2.7% at 2,620,825 (2006: 2,542,524)

I dunno...to me, the CTS and Malibu represent everything right that GM is doing (finally catching up with the interior designs/layouts/fit+finish of the Japanese) while this interior proclaims everything wrong that GM shouldn't be doing if they want to stay in the game.

I know it's pre-production, so they still have a chance to fix it, but the currently layout is just terrible and makes no ergonomic sense (aside from also looking fugly).

Uuuuuugly. Especially that interior. Holy shit that is awful.

I think it looks pretty nice. Not really a fan of the tail lights but the lines of the car look good. Of course the biggest thing will be if they make a version normal people can actually afford. If it's priced the same as a corvette it would be kind of redundant.

Base model will be ~20k

Whats going on the left hand side of that steering wheel? Is that a gauge of some sort inside the spoke of the wheel?

Hell no. Car wars always have victors - you can easily assess a better car or a worse car. Cars have definable characteristics that are concrete and can be touted as inferior or superior to another product with ease.

Please, apart from extreme cases, subjectivity plays a huge role in how a driver feels about their car. What you're looking for in a motor vehicle is different from what I'm looking for which is different from what my neighbor is looking for etc...

There are several US cars I would buy. But retro muscle cars are part of what's killing the US auto industry.

The US auto industry has been in deep shit for a long time and for a whole host of reasons, but pinning it on "retro muscle cars" is just silly.

well, this model managed to lower my respect for US cars, which is quite a feat considering I never liked US cars

jesus, it's horrible
It's a test mule.

I've been following this car for a good while now and while GM is playing it's cards very close to it's chest the various models available in '09 will be very good cars that have straight line power, good handling and dramatically sane MPGs.

Meh. Autos are where it's at for muscle cars anyway. This isn't a freaking rally car.

The big downside to the Challenger is the $40,000+ sticker.
