Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

The morning after release and a 500MB patch? This is like Arma 3 all over again.

Edit: Wait, nothing has changed at all, steam must of thought it funny to download the majority of the game again.

So, how do you make pixels, really? Just from killing monsters/finding loot?

yup... I have also seen
an item that allows you to turn ore into pixels.

So what's the chances of seeing this on mobile or console?

consoles.. around 100%

as for mobile, I can't say... I don't really follow that scene so I don't know if they have mentioned anything.

there was a patch, they never said for what... but it does seem likely that this will be a case like dungeon defenders again where any time they want to change anything it's going to be a 500+mb patch as I have been reading the game is programmed in a way that to patch it they need to push a new .exe :/

Someone did not read the memo it seems.

Phase 1 of the BETA wil have regular updates and patches that may even make your characters incompatible, or wipe them.

The first patches will be mostly bug-fixes, but they already talked about a content update in a few days.

The lava layer
appears to be exploitable: it generates as an empty layer filled with liquid (safely traversible by building and then hollowing out shafts) but dirt blocks placed there will occasionally transform to ore.

On the other hand, if you touch the bottom of the map you're stuck in a permanent fall animation until you build and "fall upward" onto a one-block-high platform.

Having fun with the game so far, even if I haven't been doing many different things than Terraria yet. I think it might be time to switch planets and change things up. I haven't hit the distress beacon yet but I guess I might as well give it a shot.

My starter planet has a ton of obsidian and very little gold. The obsidian takes so long to go through despite having a gold pickaxe. I haven't found any platinum/diamond to mine and I've found very little of value while exploring.

I reached
the molten lava center, so I guess there's not much there
.

What are those rare things that you can find that look like giant breakable jars that rotate and are usable? I haven't figured out what they do or if I'm using them incorrectly.

Someone assumes too much it seems. I do know they will be patching constantly I just had the server exe out of the folder, it redownloaded it so I put the download down to that.

I have no idea, used one and it broke into a yellow cloud that made me glow for a short time.

Oh, I expect file formats etc. to change and break things like when Minecraft gets patched. I just do it for now in case I suddenly lose all my inventory when there AREN'T patches or something. :P

Yea I'm not expecting them to never break. I'm sure they will quite a bit. I just think it would be interesting to see how long it lasts.

This is coming from someone that has his 200hour Terraria saves and worlds backed up 3 times on different devices lol

I really wasn't to bothered by the lack of a spawn point... though that very well might be because my night was spent following the following actions.

A. Get to a new planet, I go right for as long as I can, buddy goes left.
B. Upon death, Search for a new planet to explore unless there was something super exciting near where I died.
C. Repeat until awesome.

>.>;

Mmm, yeah. I was sticking to the same system and going between the two level 1 planets on it trying to explore so when I died I was going back and trying to get back to where I was...which was 5minutes running to the right or left.

Oh god, the way too quick de-spawn rate of drops just boned me.
Molten core dropped but I had a ton of minions to get through first. ;__;

Right, think I've found my feet!

Is the GAF server open to all? Do I need to do anything or speak to someone for the details (couldn't see in the OP)?

Isn't Steam using a differential patching system now? It should only be downloading changes to files, not downloading the entire file again.

So how do I give coordinates to my planet to a friend? I check his navigation an dmine and it shows same coords even if different location....

Played a good 3-4 hours yesterday , pretty slow at the start, you need to mine a lot and that iron is pretty rare. I managed to get an anvil but now i need 30 iron bar for the beacon .
My Spawn point is right next to an Avian village (Pretty big) with lot of merchants and chest to loot :P
There's a few things I noticed :

1. No hostile mode on/off for village (accidentally hit a guard while defending myself close to village from monsters)

2. Spawn point seems to be your ship only ?

3. Not sure everyone's gonna love the difficulty at the start

4. Is it me or mining is kinda slow ? (even with copper pick-axe it's pretty slow)

But I'm really enjoying this game so far , building a house is much more fun and less of a drag and so much faster .
I need to play online now

Game was pretty cool.

The progression initially is a little slow. Mining with a stone pickaxe is draaaaaagging. I have a lot of copper but can't seem to make any new tools with it so I'm stuck using my stone pickaxe to look for iron. I tried digging down but god that was painfully slow. So I started exploring the world and died quite a few times. I like the higher difficulty over say terraria but I really wish mining was a little faster and/or had the ability to upgrade to a copper pickaxe.

Didn't get to play a lot. I don't want to burn myself out in the Tier 1 portion. Just happy to be able to play it a bit and support the development.

How do you make a copper pickaxe? Do I need something besides a crafting bench? Looks like I could make an iron pickaxe if I had the materials but no option for a copper one :(

It's a BETA, there are going to be many frequent patches, some large, and game saves will be wiped, progress will be lost. Starbound is in BETA phase, it's not technically released yet.

Personally, I'm buying this now because I know I'll be buying it upon release anyway, but I'm not going to seriously play Starbound at all until the game is finished. This is just a preview for me, a chance to fool around with the early game and have fun seeing shit.

Yeah like Sarcasm said you need an anvil but for that you need iron ingot (I think 7-8 IIRC) which is not so common to find at the start , I had to dig to get some

Finally got to play this morning.

Jumped into a new world and instantly attacked by a bunch of cultists shouting "HEATHEN!"

That was fine because seven corpses later I've got some bad ass tombstones, lamps and torches, a statue and an altar I can sleep on to heal myself!

Sorry what files? I am in the same fps boat as you were in

Steam/SteamApps/Common/Starbound/Win32
Starbound.exe
&
Starbound_server.exe

Then:
Steam/SteamApps/Common/Starbound/Win32/launcher
Launcher.exe

Right click--->properties--->compatibility tab and check the Run as Administrator box at the bottom.

Improved my FPS and that's literally all I did.

Note: I have an ATI card and this fixed it.

You need an iron anvil to forge metal items like the copper pickaxe.

Why haven't I received my code? Or an email informing me?

Anyone help? I was amongst the first 15,000 preorderers...

Nevermind, had to go to the Humble Page....dumb me.

love the big "believe" logo on the gaf house lol

I think I left enough room for the N logo on the right there - kind of hard to fit it in 8x8 block pixels.

For anyone on the GAF server today, the arrow pointing down to the right of the spawn has a path that eventually leads down to the bottom. If you kill stuff on the bottom level it gives up to 40px and you can save up for a gold pick you can buy from the
frog merchant
for 380px. (marked by a big green $ along the way, hehe)

Highly recommend the 45 degree dig approach - too easy to die of falling damage with the platform shaft.

If you run to the left fron the house, you'll eventually find a
prison
.

Check your Humblebundle account or check the original receipt email. If you don't have either you can put your email in at hubmlebundle to have them resend the email to you.

Don't think they sent out seperate emails for the beta.

Yeah I discovered this! Thanks though.

You'll need to make an anvil. It's basically the crafting table for most of the metal stuff.
