PS4 will beat PS3 lifetime sales, says Sony boss

Speaking to MCV, PlayStation CEO Andrew House says the aim for PS4 is to sell far more units than its predecessor.

“It has an opportunity to significantly exceed what we’ve been able to achieve with PS3 and there’s a couple of reasons for that,” he said. “We start off with a price point that is much more consumer friendly than was there for the PS3.
What followed was a surprising move by Xbox to potentially block pre-owned and game lending, which gifted PlayStation an easy PR victory at E3 2013.

“It surprised me that we were required to make such a clear statement that we were going to maintain status quo in areas that we took for granted,” he added.

“That wasn’t dictated by us, that was by the moves the competition was making. That remains the largest surprise for me – how visceral that reaction was. But the fact that we had to put a stake in the ground, in an area that we felt was just common sense, still has me quite literally scratching my head.”

What else is he going to say though?
"Sony Boss says PS4 may or may not beat PS3"

Doesn't look as good.

There is a very high chance there will be at least one big news story this gen that either greatly increases or decreases sales......like if a huge hack were to occur on either console

I can bet Microsoft boss says Xbox One will beat Xbox 360 lifetime sales.

This isn't a news... they MUST say this.

Sales

Well considering the massive hype, the PS4 selling out everywhere, the price, Nintendo being in the dumpster this gen and Sony fixing most of the issues from the PS3 it's certainly looking likely.

You honestly can't expect him to say it would do worse.

They a little too early for that. I think ANYONE will be lucky to get 70 million sales again in this era. Better be some game changing releases coming up hehe

Enjoying my first much, will buy at least one revision over the next five years I'm sure. Though I still have my 80GB fatty PS3 and it works great. I've owned three 360s over the years. Don't plan on getting Xbox One until Halo is out.

I would hope that all three are very hungry. Sony has shown that coming into the tail of PS3. Nintendo has done a damn decent job turning around 3DS. Both still have a long way to go with WiiU/Vita. MS, I just don't know.

PS3 had fierce competition ("core" on 360, casuals on Wii), PS4 doesn't really in the console space. I think this is a pretty safe bet.

PS4 will be 150 dlls by the end of the generation confirmed. Honestly that's the only way I see that happening. The PS4 is just a PC in a box so very plausible.

I hope PS3 still does well enough to make it an "actual challenge", personally it really has become a great console over the years,
(after 2007)
.

I never really thought about that before. This being of the shelf parts, will that make the price possible to drop quicker? I don't really know anything about that, but it seems to make sense since certainly with something like Cell, that was only going to go through so many revisions. Maybe I'm way off base.

Either way, I can totally see this being true. In the "consoles are doomed!" and "return of the PS2!" predictions, I suppose I'm somewhere in between. Will be interesting to see how it all shakes out.

I thought arrogant Sony is back, then I read the article.

"It has an opportunity to significantly exceed what we’ve been able to achieve with PS3" =/= PS4 will beat PS3 lifetime sales

Makes sense to me since the user base should increase (for the console market and that both Sony and Microsoft are eating away the Nintendo's share)

Uh, he just says it has the potential to.

Let me check the magic 8-ball...

it said stop smokin, you will be glad to do 65/70.

unless this gen also goes on for 8 years...lets remember the ps3/360 sold 80 million in 8 years not even close to a normal generation cycle.

Every Playstation except PS3 has sold more than 100 million.

Beating the PS3 should be easy given the much lower entry price, more friendly architecture and noticeably more power compared to other consoles on the market*.

*PS3 multiplats started out as inferior to the 360.

Just for reference, apparently the Vita sold a similar amount in it's first couple of weeks or so on sale too.

Very early days.

I don't know if either console will pass their predecessor. PS3 and 360 both had really good late surges.
No it didn't

Yeah that's possible. Though it will depend on what Sony has in mind for PS4 in next 5 year. I am pretty sure MS will knock them hard in terms of software enhancement, and services and Xbox Live features in coming years.

This will depend on the PS4's lifespan more than anything else. Sony has already said this gen will be shorter than the last, but who knows.

Gonna have to see how things play out post-holidays to determine any kind of endgame sales trajectory, but it would definitely be nice as it means the industry is still healthy.

Vita sold around 400k launch month. PS4 has sold 5 times that already. Who knows if it will outsell the PS3 though, I doubt it will be 7 years until the next iteration of consoles.

I'm not sure how to take this, on the one hand I feel that it will outsell PS3 if it had the same lifecycle but on the other, I've read stuff on here that suggests they want a shorter life for the PS4 maybe 6 years.

One would ceraintly think so. Let's see what happens.

Just for reference, it didn't.

Hehe.

The trend I'm hearing is that the console cycles are going to be shorter. PS4 has to sell more than 10M a year for 7 years to beat PS3 numbers... Wait...

The PS4 will likely still live when PS5 is out.

Actually, no Sony console has been discontinued at the end of a gen. PS2 sold 50 million more units when the 360 gen started.
