Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

Also they really need to implement some kind of salvage/selling option in the game because loot you find is pretty meaningless without it. Great I just killed 5 bandits and got a bunch of shitty weapons that aid me in no way whatsoever. I think I've seen mention of this or something like it in the works.

As well we need something that lets us set up a way point for where we beam down to. Exploring is a big part of the game and having to trek back to an area after dying or having to go back to you ship is kind of part of the experience, but it would be nice is you could craft an item to alter the landing location. Something that's fairly expensive in terms of resources, but not too much. Just enough that you can't make like 50 of them with ease.

I'm like 80% sure I've seen them mention a way to salvage items and turn them into pixels, but I can't find the source. Considering there's an item that lets you turn ore into pixels, it seems like a no brainer.

I'm 100% sure they've mentioned adding teleport pads to beam back to your ship from anywhere. I'm not sure if they're just to change the beam down location or if they work underground. Terraria had the Magic Mirror, of course, but that was a one way trip.

What's GAF server ip?

Quote the OT, it's right at the top.

Yeah it's all no brainer stuff I'm sure they have planned to implement in some way, just a few things I would like to see come out sooner rather than later.

I must be blind. Can't see it anywhere.

So any time I come across a big building/dungeon sort of place, like the USCM Prisons, my game starts dropping in FPS like crazy, eventually getting to what feels like single digits, before ultimately crashing. Does this happen to anyone else, or has anyone seen mention of a fix for it somewhere?

It's getting really annoying.

How did I not know about this game?!?! I put so many hours into Terraria and this looks even better! Insta-buy! Can't wait to get home form work and dive in!!

Yeah, when I entered the Glitch fortress, my FPS dropped as well. Haven't crashed yet, but that's probably because I keep dying before it happens

Anyone know if all shields are created equal? I don't see any stats on them... but the one I'm using now will block like one or two shotgun blasts from these marines I'm currently fighting... but then will fail to block the next and I'll die.

I'm wondering if there's a basic limit to their effectiveness... or if some shields do better than others.

Heh.

Heh heh heh...

Mwahahahaha...

I had to look it up to make sure Decillion is an actual thing and they're not just fucking with us.

Sweet mother of stars....

They will be implementing refineries.

When I try to go to the GAF server now it tells me that the password is wrong. :(

Take out the password..just use IP. Something got borked in the update.

I know but that currently is only for Ores, has there been any discussion or confirmation of also being able to break down items into ore/other material or even converting them to pixels outright? Because there's just so much you pick up right now that's a total waste of space.

is it a bad idea to join the gaf server with a totally new character?

Nope. I did. But I suggest just incase - go into single player and get as much wood and coal as you can. If you spawn on the GAF planet you will have no wood/coal to use as fuel to get to a fresh planet.

On steam it says update required for Starbound. When I try to download it I get a thing saying an error has occurred: disk write error.

Help? :\

Have devs said anything about implementing empire building/expansion/etc.? It would be cool to be able to craft a galatic empire, rising from a noboy who hires bandits and marines to fight for him, to conquering other planets, building up your Homeworld for your empire to live and thrive and gathering an army that will fight by your side

Am I being a bit dense? If there are three sectors currently with 12.667qn planets then how does going to 10 sectors increase that to 422.22qn? Shouldn't it be 42.222qn planets?

Just bought the game this morning. I died and now I can't use the teleporter on my ship to get back to the planet. Is this a common bug?

Some info from the forums regarding how and where players start on a server:

The server reads both characters' save files (from each individual player's computer) and the world file (from the server computer) and combines them to make the universe instance. If anyone makes a new character, it will also put them all together on one randomly chosen starter world.

How many people are playing on the GAF server? Right now I play with just a few friends, but it would be kind of fun to play this on a larger scale population.

Until I can get some proper stat reporting, the most we ever got on the server is 30. On average? I have no idea... maybe about a dozen or so? Its early beta, so admin tools are really limited.

For such an early beta, there is still so much awesome in the game. I kind of want to stop playing just so I don't ruin myself for the full game.

First I heard of it. Make sure you report it.

He said he died (which should always bring you back to the ship), and is now on the ship, and can't port back down to the planet.

There's a thread about it on the official forum. Supposedly it was introduced after the latest patch.

As an amateur programmer, I find this utterly fascinating. As a player of Starbound, I find it compelling and enticing.

As an engineer with a full time job and house chores to do, I find it TERRIFYING..... O_o

We are going to need to create a planet codex, with a short description of said planet, co-ordinates to it, and one screenshot showing how it looks....

This game..my god it's full of stars! Really mindblowing that this game is infinite and that i will lose so many hours to this amazing.

Thing is... these planets aren't uniform. I was exploring a moon with eyeball-trees on half the surface until after a long trek they gave way to more traditional varieties.

Anyone else feel like the shields should have some sort of durability/repair mechanic?

My friend and I were clearing dungeons like nothing by having me block all the ranged shots standing in front and my friend shooting them from behind me.
The AI just constantly shoots and the shield blocks 100% and never breaks. Feels a bit too easy >.<

Game ROCKS. Already been wasting my nights away on it having a blast.

On second thought, maybe shields could just use energy per block based on how good it is?

I can't wait until they expand on some of the space elements. I trust space stations are coming?

No, they scrapped the space stations idea, because the ships pretty much do what the space stations are suppose to do.

They do want to have a ship to ship PvP element at some point, using a style somewhat like FTL (where individual players control certain elements of the ship: aka steering, weapons, shields, etc)

Night GAF!

Thanks for the games!

I'm Cham (female Floran) in game! Catch ya'll later!

edit: Oh yeah, this game feels right. It's reaaaally going to resonate with some people!

Found a world that is covered with towers (or mountains) that go all the way to space, quite strange. When you first beam to the world, you start on top of one.

wow, this game.

find an anchor in the middle of nowhere, decide to build dirt bridge into the heavens to investigate, find airship full of pirate-bird people, buy guns off of the ship, climb back down, then steal anchor

make sure all instances of starbound.exe are closed (ctrl+alt+delete), make sure OST isnt playing, make sure launcher isnt open. Basically make sure the files are not in use. If that doesn't fix it try restarting the PC and then updating.
