wow, this game.

How do you know if somebody is a shop? How do you engage with the shopkeepers? I'm asking because I'm worried about accidentally killing them ; ;

make sure all instances of starbound.exe are closed (ctrl+alt+delete), make sure OST isnt playing, make sure launcher isnt open. Basically make sure the files are not in use. If that doesn't fix it try restarting the PC and then updating.

I did. I uninstalled it even and complete redownloaded and it installed, downloaded the patch and broke again. What the fuck?

I got a DISK I/O error once and i fixed it by restarting everything.

Some forum posts suggest restarting steam.

This guy seemed to fix multiple peoples "AN ERROR OCCURED WHILE UPDATING STARBOUND" (DISK WRITE ERROR) problem

To fix it restart your computer and then open up steam again. Then go to the downloads section on steam and move starbound up the queue (starbound will probably be the only thing in it if your not downloading anything else you still have to move it up for some reason though). Starbound will "download" but stay at zero percent. Steam might say it will finish in a hour or five but it is lying it should finish in a couple minutes depending on your internet (also for Me it said I was downloading 0 bytes might happen to you don't worry it means nothing). When it finishes boot it back up and it should work. This is what worked for me. Your case might just fix itself as steam is a bit random.

just walk up to npc's and press 'E' really. I wonder if the investigate icon would work as well for that.

Hey thanks man – yeah I’m certain that I haven’t accidentally put down a shopkeeper, then. As for inspecting, and this could just be because I’m a Floran, all I get is “A funny looking person.” Then again, I haven’t come across a single shopkeeper so…

They should have some sort of icon hovering over friendly NPCs/Shops, IMO.

The new Leather Armor is ridiculous strong for how cheap it is. You can skip most of the metal Armor and just go with it even in Sector B.
Facetanked the UFO with it and barely got a scratch.

it seems more likely that if there is one NPC in a building, or an NPC with kinda fancy clothes, or that NPC is in like, the tower, they'll be a shopkeeper more likely than not

New as in this last patch? I haven't been able to figure out how to make anything with the leather yet.

I think they will tone it down again.
Before, the beginning was a little bit too hard. Now it's too easy.
Start --> make bow --->hunt a bit --> make leather Armor --> be set for Sector A and beginning of B in 1-2 hours.

It's server based I believe. Very similar to how Terraria and Minecraft did multiplayer.

Craft a Yarn Spinner on the workbench. Then you can make leather armor and fabric.

I'm not really big on how damage and armor works in this game. The power curve is way too strict on what you can use and survive, at least early on.

Don't try fighting the UFO (non cheesy) with anything less than 10 armor rating. You'll just die in a few hits. But then if you have 10 armor rating, it and the penguins barely hurt you, and it just becomes swinging away at him with your weapon for a very long time, with the occasional bandage.

the robot boss because I couldn't find any way to get an armor rating better than 15, which means the level 20 robot kills me in one or two hits while I do about 3 damage to it, and it's near impossible to avoid his attacks and still hit him. Shield didn't seem to work either.

So, yeah, beta.

Edit: Just dropped some more weapons into the chests on the server. I've found a bunch I don't need. I've been Aterra, by the way.

The second one seems to default to carrying raw materials.

Agreed. I've been having a lot of trouble finding good armour, and until then every fight is pretty much fatal.

Use bow to kill enemies (the bow should be the final hit) - they will drop leather.

Regarding the iron, this is a more difficult issue. They said they are working on an ore rebalance tonight. This might mean, after the patch, only planets that haven't been visited ever will see changes. The problem can also be that this planet you are on has been severely mined. Try going to a new planet, or use the matter manipulator to mouseover areas that haven't been dug yet. Try to find underground pocket caverns that haven't been explored.
