Super Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS Thread 3: Ridley's Believe It or Not!

The cross functionality will be snapshot trading.

Or Miiverse posts from some Magius guy who thinks Ganondorf is the best character ever.

But no really I hope in this iteration we can have more special attacks to customize the characters further and make them more unpredictable.

Zeeroid got banned for that skull kid thread? :(

Troll threads are a slippery slope and I understand why a mod would choose to do what he/she did given the general responses in that thread. I guess the regrettable thing is that Zeer0id may have been compelled to make that kind of thread due to suggestions here being thrown around at the time of Skull Kid's reveal. I'm not going to say he was pressured into doing it, but it might have contributed to a poor judgment call on his part.

Also I agree that we are due for a Smash trailer which will hopefully be in the Direct focusing on 2014 and beyond. Whether it is in December or January isn't too big of a deal, but I really just want more gameplay footage considering that even with the newcomers we have there still isn't much of them out there. Wii Fit Trainer for instance I still have no idea how she will play aside from her moves being based on exercise poses. New stages, veteran fighters, and items all featured on the website over the past several months would also be fantastic. As far as newcomers, I believe we can assume at this point that Nintendo is going to announce them in groups. We know each will have a dedicated CG trailer, so I wouldn't be surprised to watch the Nintendo Direct and see a recap trailer with 2 or 3 newcomers thrown on top as opposed to Brawl's drip feed of information.

Well either that or there won't be many newcomers at all considering I think we can scratch off newcomer reveals on the site this go around. I'm just trying to be optimistic! :(
I honestly think six more newcomers is the most we can hope to see prior to release, and they'll all be revealed via Nintendo Direct. There will also likely be two or three hidden newcomers. Considering the CG trailers are used to "introduce" the newcomers, I don't think any of them will pop up on the official site like the veteran reveals. The trailers wouldn't have any impact if the characters were immediately spoiled through a screen shot at the top of the site.

Well I guess during every monthly or bi-monthly ND in 2014 they could just throw in another character trailer if they wanted to. Personally I'm holding out for around 12 new characters in total, (which I don't think is unreasonable...) because that 6 character rumor fills me with dread and any newcomer reveal that goes against that list would put a lot of worries to rest for me.

On the subject of newcomers, do you think the reveal trailers will just be viewable in a gallery or will replace the "Warning! Challenger approaching!" screen?

Example: You clear an event match that takes place on the boxing ring stage, maybe you have to be Captain Falcon. You win the event, and then you get the "Warning! Challenger approaching!" appear then it plays a pre-rendered clip of Little Mac entering the ring.

Or an event where you play as Mario, Link, Kirby or DK on a mountain stage, then after that you get the little Mega Man clip before having to fight him.

Make sense?

I don't mind six newcomers prior to release, since that's more newcomers than Melee had at launch. Just depends on how secret characters are handled. Brawl had a ton of newcomers, but almost all of them were there from the start so you were just left unlocking characters you already assumed would be there besides Wolf, ROB and Lucario.

Six starters (I want 3rd parties to be playable from the start this time), Falcon, Ness, Marth and a few of the Melee/Brawl secrets unlockable from the start, and then six or so new characters as unlockable. Guess it'd make sense if a lot of the remaining possible characters are more fan-servicey ones like Palutena, Shulk, Takamaru, Rosalina, etc. that don't have the same mainstream appeal/recognition like Villager or Mii.

They're just advertisements and at most will be viewable in a gallery like Brawl's pre-release trailers were. Snake's pre-rendered trailer had nothing to do with how you unlocked him for instance.

Probably just the traditional "challenger approaching" silhouette that appears right before the fight, which I think makes it more exciting as you are kind of shocked as you see the character come swinging at you thinking "oh shit Mewtwo/Falco/ blue-haired guy sword guy is in this game!?". Maybe a short clip like Toon Link/Jigglypuff/Wolf got in Brawl before their fights.

So, just a thought, If it hasn't been brought up already, does anyone think Skull Kid is replacing Tingle as the Zelda series AT because they're making Tingle playable? I'd prefer Ghirahim, but I can see it happening.

Ugh, I hope not. If he did then I would rather to see that he should represent his own series.

I doubt Tingle will be playable. I don't think Sakurai would give two unrelated newcomers a Balloon Fight recovery. It's too specific.

Sakurai gives characters who're otherwise completely unrelated identical moves all the time. Zelda and Mewtwo in Melee have near-identical recoveries, after Mega Man we've had four different characters with 'charge beam' like moves that visually look extremely similar (I know Mega's is just his Smash-side), Pikachu and Luigi's side-B's are identical and there's probably a couple more examples I'm forgetting.

I don't think it's a big enough factor to stop a character getting in unless their entire potential moveset is already rep'd by someone else.

I'd love Tingle and he's the last Zelda rep who consistently reappears in different incarnations besides Impa, but the US absolutely loathes the character. I feel it's the one time a region's hatedom for the character would stop them ever being playable. I dug Ghirahim in SS, but it'd feel awkward having a Zelda character from a specific game against other Zelda characters who more just represent the overall franchise (even though their designs are blatantly from TP/WW). Sheik's a grey-area where she was supposed to be in TP and Zelda having an alter-ego she transforms into was also in WW so I feel she isn't necessarily an OoT rep, but I guess that's a debatable issue for others.

Didn't stop him from giving Mega Man and Sonic nearly identical recoveries
Besides the obvious aesthetic differences between a robot dog and a cartoonish spring, those characters aren't nearly defined by those moves. Tingle's balloons are his most prominent characteristic, so it just seems odd to me that if Sakurai was going to include Tingle he'd bother giving Villager balloons as well.

Balloon presents are a common element in AC so it doesn't seem weird Villager would have a balloon recovery that ties into Balloon Fight since he got passed in Melee and BF's an unlockable in the original AC.

At the same time, Tingle's balloon recovery (I know there's that one balloon fight parody game with Tingle instead) could easily work differently; just a controllable version of how it worked as a stage hazard in Great Bay, back in Melee. Maybe Villager's could have no offensive abilities but controls better, while Tingle's can easily knock people back when it pops but being bigger and only one balloon can be cancelled out easier?

I hope Sakurai reveals a few more powerful characters in the future. For me, the most fun characters to play as have at least a few powerful attacks, like Lucas or DeDeDe. Most of the new characters look more speedy then tanky, except for maybe Villager.
This is why we need Ridley
Scott to let Sakurai use an Alien as a newcomer.

I'd be down for an original Zelda character, in other words no Toon Zelda garbage please. There's a lot of good choices to be had like Ganon, Ghirahim, Midna + Wolf Link, or even Ravio. (cowardly shop keeper joins the battle!)

Midna would be the only one I want. She already has a good possible Final Smash with her Fused Shadows.
Maybe even have her be interchangeable with her imp and humanoid form.

Assist Trophy ala Mr. Resseti. Calling it now.

I hate how stifling the roster number seems to be in these games. I'd love it if SSB was the type of series where it wouldn't be out of the question to want both Cranky and Dixie. Or Skull Kid, Impa, Tingle and WW Ganondorf. Or Ridley and Dark Samus. Or Samurai Goroh and Black Bull. The roster should accommodate 60+ folk, dammit

Hello guys, finally got my account approved. Big Smash Bros fan here. I'm hoping we get news tomorrow, and maybe Little Mac and a release date?

At some point we may get there as it seems this game will be close to the 50 character mark but today Sakurai cares about balance and unless a good 1/4 of them are clones it's just not going to happen. One day Sakurai will no longer be at the helm and unlike Sakurai, Iwata believes you can't have too many Smash Brothers(character choices), when that day comes and the new directors vision aligns with Iwata's you will have your 60+ roster that will probably be extremely unbalanced with no soul to call its own. Or maybe just the opposite I don't know.

IF Smash Bros. is talked about tomorrow a release date is probably also likely.

There's some great games lined up in 2014, though the schedule's kind of vague.

Welcome to GAF. Beware the Waluigi nerds.

I don't follow the tourney scene, but weren't Melee and Brawl's rosters unbalanced? If there's going to be borderline clone characters in the roster and tournaments have all Marth, Meta Knight and Fox in the final rounds, then you may as well appease the fans who want their favorite character in as playable.

I'd actually be really surprised to hear a release date for Smash until we're a month or two away. Brawl's release getting pushed back twice killed a lot of the hype for it and then we had to deal with the dojo spoiling everything because of the Japanese release.

I really don't think we'll hear anything until it's gold and being pressed.

Welcome to GAF. Revere the Waluigi faithful.

I think that a release date is possible soon considering it's supposed to be released next year. If it isn't revealed by February I'm going to be worried.

It would be less of a problem if Nintendo actually adhered to a worldwide release. I feel it's been cooking for a decent amount of time though.

On an unrelated note, I remember sp0rsk threatening to ban people for discussing Megaman in the old Dojo like it was yesterday. Now we have Megaman and he has the same stature as the Captain N incarnation.

I just realized something interesting: this game’s been in development for a little over a year and a half. A year and a half into Brawl’s development is when the Dojo starting getting daily updates. I’m hoping this means character reveals will be happening more frequently going into 2014. For what it’s worth, we’ve seen more new elements via daily pics in the last month than in any month prior.

One thing that I really want to know right now is if the 3DS will have some kind of Streetpass feature. Perhaps something like KI: Uprisings Gem system where you can send stickers, perhaps?
