NEC 14 | Fighting Game Tournament | Essington, PA. | December 6-8th

Not hating on it, but maaaaaaaan KI just does absolutely nothing for me.

Also the game looks pretty, but when the picture is less than perfect (aka on twitch) it actually looks pretty bad with a lot of the particle effects.

Trying to watch it right now....yeah, I have to agree. Just can't really get into it I guess.

Wow the Android Twitch app is actually good now. I'm actually able to watch Arturo's stream without it being a slideshow (though the quality is bad).

Nah, for some reason people decided to give a negative connotation to excitement when Marvel 3 came out though, when Marvel 2 is pretty much the hypest game ever with considerably more bullshit.

How about we all just say EXCITE

You have people screaming fake hype at games they dont like. Then you go to arturo's stream and you have people crying about how marvel curleh isnt hype enough. You have commentators yelling at stuff for no reason.

It pretty much echos what Ryan Hunter said about how the spectator appeal of fighting games now. It's pretty superficial...on par with a Michael Bay film. And then you wonder why esports gets so much more viewers than us. You don't need yelling for a game to be compelling. But as a community in order to differentiate ourselves, we've always positioned ourselves to have the "hype factor."

You can always have good games, good players and good events but something like "hype" is fickle, situational and not really something you can build a foundation off of.

So ya think KI would be on EVO?
It most assuredly will be if Microsoft provides the necessary Xbox Ones. Which they will if they want the great advertising that is EVO.

Even if it somehow weren't, which I don't see happening, I'm sure someone like Max would run a side tournament or something.

People are hype addicts now basically. They want hype 24/7 for all games. When a game isn't hype people start complaining.

Basically they want "Never Give Up" Justin moments or Daigo parry moments all the time but people don't realize that those moments are hype because they are rare. If you are getting hype over something that happens like every 5 seconds or so it probably isn't actually hype.

And I am just going to use the word "excite" now.

Depends, some spectators are players as well. Face value is very important, I agree. There are games I like to play more than watch (SC), but if we're just talking about the broad audience of stream monsters, it's hard to deduce the familiarity each of them have with each game to know what makes them excited or disinterested. What one may consider some screaming commentary, I consider presentation value. My comparison here is that you could be the absolute best and most lyrical rapper ever, but if you have no delivery or personality, I really don't want to hear what you have to say on a beat and you might be better suited for spoken word.

Though hype is situational I agree, it is pervasive enough that I do feel it is characteristic of the FGC. It's what gives the Daigo Parry video it's personality and made people tune in in the first place, and what keeps people retained within and coming back to the community to watch stuff like House of Crack or Aqua's streams to get more of that. The word choice might not be the best, but I think whatever that excitement is, it's very real and a big reason why during Evo Top 8 I'm literally standing up in front of my desktop watching. And while everyone did have this heightened sense of arousal, I don't think it was the yelling primarily that did it for me, and that's a pretty reductionist way of looking at things IMO.

EDIT: And hype is not restricted to people yelling either. There has been a lot of hype stuff without yelling. Just think of all the Marvel tech or exhibitions that get uploaded after the fact that still have significant entertainment value. Seeing Aqua make great reads on his stream is hype, for instance.

Fine, it's EPIC

I think this is why Street Fighter is the perennial centerpiece in the FGC. There's a lot of tension in tight Street Fighter matches, so you don't really need non-stop "hype" moments to be entertaining and watchable.

The Idea of KI being at a future major is interesting because by that time (post March) the game would be completely different when Fulgore (and possibly Cinder/Combo/Riptor) releases if they're going for the "new character every two months" route.
