Super Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS Thread 3: Ridley's Believe It or Not!

Try it and see if you can adapt. It's perfectly fine if you're able to get used to it.

It plays fine, you might have to change some control inputs around to suit your playstyle better and what not. Classic Controller Pros should be cheap online, $20 max I think (new).

It's perfectly fine casually. You can turn on / off shaking the Wii Remote to do quick Smash attacks. It'll be fine when you play with friends.

Appreciate the help. Thanks guys.

I dislike anything other than Gamecube controls. Smash 4 concerns me.

Buy the Mayflash adapter then.

It is an option, but it doesn't sit right with me. Hopefully I will be able to adjust to the Wii U pro controller.

Shouldn't be too hard. I adjusted to the Classic Controller Pro easily, and I used to love playing the GameCube controller. I've practiced with the Wii U Pro Controller on Melee (Devolution on Wii U) and it's confusing, but only because the buttons are mapped differently when playing GC games. Either way, should be fine.

Maybe Nintendo will make another "Classic Controller" modeled after the GC controller for Smash Bros and GameCube VC. Lol

Castle Siege (good layouts despite the weird transitioning), Delfino, Frigate Orpheon

Levels that can die horribly: Ice Climbers, New Pork, the G&W stage

I'm hoping they don't keep Castle Siege, they have so much material to make a new Emblem level on both the Wii U and the 3ds.

What's wrong with the Summit level? Apart from the fish? =p Also, I agree with you on New Pork - that stage was a dull Ridley.
It was way too big!!

I have been meaning to start playing Brawl with the Classic Controller but I fear it would make my orange Gamecube controller jealous.

There is a market for it.

And the eventual Gamecube games on the Wii U would play better, too.

On summit I hated the slippery surfaces and the part where it goes low gravity. Plus the ice shard falling on the lower part. Felt like a bunch of stage elements crammed into one stage.

Q: I wonder if the Ice Climbers will continue to have awful stages?

A: No. The 3DS has decided against anything Ice Climber related.

I can see what you mean. I guess I remember it being fun because I had a lot of low gravity laughs on it and throwing a friend into the water for them to get eaten up was hilarious

There really isn't much Sakurai can do with Ice Climber for a third stage. Maybe he'll extend Brawl's Balloon Fight cameo and instead make a traveling, all-encompassing NES stage with locales and characters from a variety of games.

The new Ice Climbers level should be based on the bonus stage. Moving cloud platforms, scattered stationary platforms, death pits, sidewalls and an open top.

Spear Pillar was my least favorite stage in the entire series

it was only ever good if things weren't flipped around and such... that was awful

but when they start doing that whole LOL FLIP THE SCREEN shit, it became the worst for me

so.. with that said, if they do bring it back, i hope they get rid of that gimmick, the stage could've been so great without it

You can dislike the stage but as to your suggestion, no way. Spear Pillar thrives off its crazy gimmicks, a stage that purely embodies the chaotic side of smash, if they brought it back without the gimmicks I'd wonder why they bothered. Playing this in four player, everyone losing their shit when the controls get flipped, the coward hiding in the tunnel gets blasted by a giant laser of death and the general fun that comes from low gravity, it's the best kind of crazy.

Now if your Spear Pillar Legacy is entirely against the CPU who are undeterred by such stage trickery when single player modes throw you in there against your will then yeah maybe I get why it doesn't scream fun times but in a series that has plenty of normal stages in it already the idea of bringing Spear Pillar back without its gimmick galore is just so boring I guess.
Actually you can take out that silly looking moonduck who has no business being on the stage anyway and brings nothing to the table but slicing crescents.

i dont mean getting rid of every gimmick, just the ones that makes the stage unplayable

the laser and the low gravity im okay with

That would be cool. The could display the time/stock left on the back wall like they do in the game.

The condor should swoop in and rile things up too.

Yep, you gotta have that condor.

I always thought it looked like some sort of pterodactyl.

The worst smash stages to me will always be the autoscrollers. Well...maybe just the Brawl ones. Rainbow Cruise, Pokefloats, and Big Blue are pretty fun, but Mushroomy Kingdom and Rumble Falls took that shit to new lengths. I don't believe it's even possible to have an actual fight on Rumble Falls in particular, the stage moves at a pace that's too quick requiring mostly constant movement. And it had such good music locked to it!

Also New Pork City is just not good.

To me, Spear Pillar was the biggest waste of potential for a Smash stage ever. One of the few not-boring Pokemon stages in design that makes it into Smash and it is killed by terrible time/space gimmicks. Rumble Falls, Icicle Mountain, New Pork City, 75m, and Electroplankton are also shit. (in fact Spear Pillar is better than all of them, I was just disappointed by it)

Stages should have some customization available. At least a "hazard on/off" toggle and at most, options for each individual facet of each level (scrolling/moving, individuals hazards, Etc.).

New Pork City may be the worst stage ever put in a Smash game, far too big and open with the camera pulled so far back it's hard to tell what's going on. The other awful stage is Mario Bros not because it's a bad lay out but because the randomly spawning turtles and crabs can be thrown for WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY too much knock back. Battles turn into an insane game of dodge ball where getting hit by the ball instantly means death. This is fun every once and awhile but not as an actual battle stage.

Oh I can't believe I forgot Mario Bros., what a piece of crap! Hell, it seems like a lot of the retro-throwback stages in Brawl were flat out terrible. (Not talking about stages from Melee/64 btw)

Even though I often enjoy the mayhem Spear Pillar can bring, I still prefer dealing with Cresselia over the others.

Brawl had a lot of crappy stages, unfortunately. I personally liked Spear Pillar and its silly gimmicks (except for when it was just boring Cresselia), but with stages like New Pork, 75m, Rumble Falls... even Port Town, though it was visually and design-wise more interesting than Mute City, was killed by the cars being much more dangerous than they were in Mute City.

To this day I have no idea why they didn't go with 25m instead of 75m. It would have been more wide-open so you could actually fight decently, would be a helluva lot more visually iconic, and would have some of the same gimmicks 75m did.

Mario Bros stage is hilarious!

I hated both Donkey Kong stages in Brawl. 75m was stupidly big and the waterfall one was very boring. I liked most of the other ones, even Spear Pillar.

Yeah, DK was neat as a straight recreation of the first level in Smash but was very bad for fighting too.

DK stage was fine outside of 3 things

The stupid spike that instant killed you

The section with the tight tunnel

The section with the floating platform you couldn't jump though that was hard to distinguish

I think that is just fun variety.

The best DK stage is still Congo Jungle.

And I don't even think Smash 64 had the best stages as so many others on here do.

No sarcasm whatsoever!

It's playable q, you just got to adapt on the fly, it's what separates the men from the boys that are falling away from the stage edge in their confusion.

Of course there's plenty of stages that I don't like, I'd just rather they didn't turn back up again as opposed to modifying them since others might like them as they are, that said with the exception of Wario Ware, just change the reward system for the microgames to small health recovery or something, If in my microgame victory I get turned giant while my opponent gets invincibility then I have the right to cry bullshit.

Anywho New Pork City is the absolute worst to me, it doesn't even have stage gimmicks as an excuse for its high levels of suck, the layout it just so sloppy in both visuals and platform placement. In fact the Ultimate Chimera is a god send for its ability to one hit kill players and end the pain faster.

I'd put Norfair on the list of shit stages too except the fight for the safety chamber is always a highlight in matches with my friends.

Yeah, that part of Norfair is pretty fun. Though god help you if you get stuck between the lava flows when they are at both sides.

I can't stand the Electroplankton level. It's an awful level that makes any character with projectiles basically useless.

75m is also terrible, but for some reason the game never picks it when I choose Random. (I play tournaments with my brother whenever we can, and always choose random characters and stages. It leads to a lot of
sometimes
playful name calling and arm punching when we get characters we suck with against their mains)

Completely agree, hopefully the inevitable Returns stage is good.

Yeah, I'm one of the "boring" ones that wants to see yet another jungle stage. Although something based on the forest or ruins could be cool.

There's one area of DKCR I always thought, based at least on the background of it, would make a good Donkey Kong stage. It's the part of the first ruins level where it opens up into a jungle vista with the original Donkey Kong monument in the background.

(wish I could find a better picture)

I think those big, open vistas of the island are some of the defining visuals of the game and would do a pretty good job of representing the series itself as well.

Yup, Brawl definitely had a lot of annoying stages.

75m is a novel concept, it just was annoying to fight in due to the platforms being either to small or in a bad position. Whenever I play in that stage, most of the fight primarily occurs on the right-most platforms. the stage is too one-sided.

New Pork City is the worst stage and has been said time and time again. It is too big and a pain in the ass to go through. Hyrule from Zelda II is a great example of a big stage done right (so happy to see them bring it back in Brawl).

Rumble Falls is probably the most annoying scrolling stage due to the obstacles placed and how fast it moves.

The Summit was just an awkward stage to fight on with its platform placements, that icicle shard, the water, and the god damn fish.

Mushroomy Kingdom's concept is cool too, but it just wasn't fun, that's really all there is to it.

Spear Pillar's upside down and flipping thing was annoying for me. Sure it is supposed to be something that changes the way it plays completely, but I don't think making it annoying to control for X amount of time is what people would enjoy doing.

Jungle Japes just seems way too small to fight on. (And then Project M makes it worse by removing the water).

Outside of those stages, I think Brawl's was fine (though that portion on the Wind Waker stage with the ship hitting the rock is pretty bad).

The thing that absolutely annoyed me about Brawl was some of the stages they brought back from Melee. The stages I don't like from Melee are Rainbow Cruise, Yoshi's Island, Big Blue, and Venom. 3/4 of those are in Brawl.......Sakurai pls.
