Massive Gaming YouTube Channels Getting 100s of Flagged Videos Continuously

If your game is ruined for someone by them watching somebody else play it, it ain't much of a game. It's a movie.

Well, I don't agree but you can't post full movies on youtube either? If you think linear games are like movies then that seems like a good argument for not allowing monetization of let's plays of them to me.

Is Pewdiepie effected? Oh god I hope so.

I'm so glad Ghostrobo got it. I seriously hate that kid. I hate any gaming channel on YouTube that acts like a dick and uses this as a argument "Well that view you just gave me earned me money". He along with most other channels also use thumbnails that are the most likely to get views so they get more money. Way to act like a greedy ass, now it's coming back to bite them. Hell, he's already saying how if he stops making money he'll find other ways to make money like vlogs and donatations. Pathetic, of course he's not exactly saying that but that's definitely what seems like he's implying.

Also, any person that says "Please like & subscribe" pretty much guarantees that I'll dislike their video and stop watching them. If people like your videos then they'll subscribe, begging just makes you look pathertic.

I'm honestly quite happy this happened. I really hate gaming channels and how pathetic they are, "Please like & subscribe, also donate to me pretty please". It just makes my skin crawl, what a way to abuse your fan base and it just goes to show how much the masses are sheep and eat it up.

These people don't care about their fanbase. I honestly feel like if a person like Pewdiepie stopped earning money through these videos he'd stop making them. They only care about money, hence why they beg people to subscribe and donate, and also use rediculous thumbnails to get views and make a ton of money. Like how Pewdiepie plays the same 5 games over and over again while pretending to be scared for the 1000th time, then proceeds to use the most ridiculous thumbnail because he knows people will click on it.

People who actually seriously try to make a living off YouTube by doing let's plays for money probably deserve this anyways. YouTube has become so plagued with 1000s of people trying to get in on the whole "let's play" thing in an attempt to make quick and easy money. How about stop being lazy and try getting a real job? Or something more original than just being the billionth gaming channel. You could argue that game news companies are no different, except they are. Their job is to inform you on games and help make you a decision if a game is worth playing or not while also helping developers sell their games, let's players are only in it for money and take advantage of their viewers by begging, using exaggerated and misleading thumbnails, and purposely acting like you just drank 10 cans of red bull.

These people are still allowed to make these videos, they just wouldn't make any money. But that's obviously not good enough for them as they're greedy and will just resort to begging to their viewers to donate money on their website and that's probably what would happen.

I'm glad this is happening. I'm tired of these million different gaming channels trying to cash in on the success of let's plays, we'll see who the people that are left still making videos without a check and no begging, those will be the ones who truly care about their fans.

I agree. As long as they stop calling themselves games.

To play devil's advocate.. if I'm a 50-year-old video game executive and someone told me a 16-year-old kid is making a six-figure salary off showing video clips of my product on YouTube, I would probably want to do something about it too.

There is more to this than just the perspective of a gamer. We all love watching these videos and it will suck if a lot of them go away, but don't act like content creators don't have their own take on this.

Yes, YouTube gameplay gives a game exposure, but maybe there should be a line drawn about showing a complete playthrough of a game.

Yeah, I get what you mean, I make chairs for a living*, and seeing that kids make huge sums of money sitting on my chairs, while I earn just enough to reach the end of the month, it's disheartening.

*Disclaimer: not really.

What's with gaf's obsession with this salt thing? Shit was played out in 2001, I've never once seen anyone else on any other website in the last decade say it. It's exclusive to these boards and it gets repeated over and over and over and over dozens upon hundreds of times a day.

Does this not get old to you guys?

I don't know who this PewDiePie character is, and I've never seen any of his/her videos. But just due to the sheer quantity of salt-filled posts in these threads I'm going to have to check out their videos when I get home from work.

The more I read about this the more it seems that this is a problem with Youtube's algorithm rather than a specific change in policy by copyright holders.

Youtube gonna Youtube.

Reviews and commentaries should be fine. Let's Plays, monetized, should not.

Been my opinion for a long time. I think Google is going a little nuts here, but I agree something has to be done.
What are Let's Plays, if not commentary on gameplay?

Pewdiepie is the biggest channel on Youtube. 17 million subscribers, 192 million monthly views. (I know, I was shocked, too. Would've never imagined an LPer to be the biggest YT channel.)

Google likely would discard Content ID if the part of the DMCA that prevents copyright holders from making false claims without penalty (ergo, they actually have to work to verify that certain content is infringing and that fair use applies in individual situations) wasn't completely toothless. Unfortunately, right now due to a relatively recent court case, said part (the 512(f) clause) is basically worthless.

Of course, on the flipside, this does strengthen the argument that the DMCA's takedown system is, by its very nature, a violation of the First Amendment. The main problem is actually getting this argument to the Supreme Court in some capacity.

It was only a matter of time, randoms in their bedrooms making 6 figure incomes by talking over game footage? Someone is always going to want a slice.

So... Enlighten me. Is there ANYONE who actually makes a six-figure salary off just youtube videos?

Because, even the especially popular Game Grumps have confirmed that the money they earn from their videos is not very much.

That being said, I don't really watch much in the way of Let's Plays aside from them and Hat Films. There's also Seananners, but his videos don't really qualify, even if they're immensely entertaining.

Those numbers are amazing! TV shows with actors and high production values would kill for that. By way of contrast, the finale of one of my favourite shows Sherlock only got 7.9 million viewers.

Posted not even 20 seconds after what I just wrote. Good god.

It annoyed me at first, but now I don't mind it. If it really bothers you, just substitute 'bitter'. I don't think there would be any loss of meaning.

Off gameplay? I imagine pewdiepie and yogscast do off the top of my head

I don't care about let's plays and never got any entertainment value from them. I always viewed them as "how to" videos today help me beat the game or to find things I missed in a game. Never been into them and watch them religiously for escapism.

But even for a person like me, this seems like going too far.

I love that you condemn Joe Gamer for wanting to make a few bucks but think IGN, Gamespot and those other big guys do it out of the goodness of their hearts.

wasnt YT making allot of money form all these videos? maybe its for the better. this creates oppurtinities. YT has become shit anyway, just look at their comment section, useless.

This will make people who monetize gaming content without authorization obsolete. It's astonishing how partners think that (1) all publishers are blocking monetization and that (2) only partners are uploading video game videos.

So what you want is for people who were making content for the gaming community to be beholden to the publishers instead of their audience like gaming journalists increasingly are now?

I see where you're going with the skateboarding analogy but you get a lot more of the experience watching someone game than skateboard.

If I and some friends upload footage of us playing basketball, do we owe the estate of James Naismith, inventor of basketball, because we're "using his content"?

If I upload a video of myself and some friends walking the picturesque streets of some city and it's popular enough to generate ad revenue, should that city's government flie a claim against me for "using their assets"? Is that city losing tax revenue because someone might watch my video rather than go visit their city?

Because that's where this is heading.

It's not just YouTube, and it's not just video. Corporations will be issuing takedown notices to forums when people "spoil" content, claiming that simply uttering it is (1) using their IP without permission, and (2) depriving them of revenue because they don't need to go buy it now that they've read about it.

No, nothing like that is happening. Nothing even close. But that's where this is ultimately leading.

Making a cover of an existing song is legal, isn't it? That makes much more use of another artist's work than a video game Let's Play does.

This only affects people making money off gaming content. Plenty of users are willing to upload videos and get big numbers / lots of subscribers even if they don't get paid as past has shown – don't worry for that.

It really isn't. Copyright law isn't an all encompassing thing. It has specific guidelines. You're really exaggerating here.

Eh? I see it all over the place in gaming communities. Heck, I saw college basketball games last year where someone in the crowd had a large piece of cardboard looking like a salt shaker and he would pretend to pour it to mock players who were having a bad game.

People hoping this will stop Pewdipie will be disapointed, since the majority of his videos are about indie and obscure niche games. He rarely makes series about mainstream games. So out of the top gaming youtubers, i imagine he will not be majorly affected.

Man this thread degenerated quickly from legal issues to internet personalities people hate. I'm not sure I see the value in hating on internet personalities on the internet in the first place, given the Streisand effect. Ignoring the people you dislike is far more effective than giving them free publicity.

Wow. Now, while I may not like some of these folks on YouTube, I wouldn't wish them the worst. But on the side of them saying to like and subscribe... it doesn't mean you have to. I think most times it is a friendly reminder. Or gets those that maybe are more passive to think "Hey I really liked that video, maybe I will like it." Or those who like the channel to subscribe. They have everything to gain just as a reminder.

Similarly, I'm not a fan of a lot of stuff, but there are definitely people out there producing a tonne of extremely worthwhile content that is beneficial not only to gamer's but also beneficial to games they cover in terms of sales, and it will be unfortunate if they get adversely effected by this stuff to the extent that they stop producing content.

I have thankfully been uploading content and let's plays of only Indie stuff and hopefully I will be able to continue doing my let's plays but I really feel for those that this has hit hardest. I was hoping to move into "Let's Playing" as my full time Job if I got my channel down and now this I am really upset as I really fear that if I make this change it will end me.

Do you guy think I should just give up now, Seriously?

I don't see why this is an issue. You have to have permission to use other people's content, just like with anything. Regardless of the effort you put into your videos.

Bad Luck PS4
Implements share button, Youtube comes down hard on game videos.
Except you share to FB/Twitter and Twitch, where this shit isn't happening.

Pewdipie is probably one of the most annoying human beings I have ever had the displeasure of viewing, and that is being complimentary.

Most of his video's are sold on the idea that he is genuinely afraid of what is happening on screen, overacting to the point of nausea, he has his own "bro" code which is pure cringe at best and he gets paid to talk with a pathetically childish voice and quite literally sounds like a complete idiot whilst doing it.

Entertaining? Maybe for a 10 year old child, he is a complete cancer to informative gaming discussion in my opinion and not to mention an utter buffoon.

His channel has zero value to me whatsoever and if he were to leave YouTube forever it would be a great day for gaming in general, so lets hope that this somehow prevents him from posting videos that make him money and he vanishes.
Way to come off as extremely jealous, childish and vindictive.

I think it depends entirely on your approach. If it's just a case of 'watch me play' then in truth that ship might of sailed. However if it's a case of 'How to', tutorials and reviews/critiques then I'd say there's scope. Ultimately I think it's about bringing added content to the experience and the more you can do that the better.

I've never made it through a Let's Play except maybe for a Giant Bomb endurance run - maybe I'm too old. But there are some channels that I follow, like GameChasers, Clan of the Grey Wolf, GameSack, but those mostly deal in retro games/history/commentary. I wonder how they would be affected.

Apparently, ANYONE can take down a YT vid. Remember back then when there was some random chick who took down a bunch of gaming related vids using the content ID thingy and claimed those vids for her. And she did not have anything to do with those vids she takes down.

Bad comparison. Basketball and cities aren't Intellectual Properties. Try again.

pretty shitty attitude to have just because you don't like something. Why not wish he has a car crash as well.

I hope retro channels dont get affected, but it would fall under the same stuff as new releases.

sad day when this stuff stops. Companies like Nintendo and Sega aren't doing anything to reach people online like YouTube personalities are.

And also ANYONE can send disputes/counter-notifications to bogus claims provided they have all necessary rights on the video. Several publishers have already confirmed they're going to accept counter-claims.

This situation is pretty shitty, but that summary is a massive exaggeration. 99% of gaming channels aren't run by people who will immediately quit if they make less (or potentially no) money off of YouTube videos.

Also, it's not like those affected have absolutely no resource, they just have to deal with content ID in the same way as people without a partner network.

Seriously, LPs existed before monetization and it‘ll exist after monetization is gone. Now it‘ll be your hobby and not your job.
