Super Smash Bros Wii U and 3DS Thread 3: Ridley's Believe It or Not!

The hate for the SSE is overblown imo. Yeah, it was boring, but the cutscenes was cool, and some of the boss figths like the one with MetaRidley or whatever was fun. Also, the way they had Sonic enter is late was a nerdgasmic moment imo, and worth playing through just for that.

Cutscenes aren't part of the gameplay and boss fights doesn't make up a lot of the game. I don't see how the hate for SSE is overblown.

I don't think SSE was the worst thing in the world, I still managed to play through it all the way to Taboo and I really can't handle playing through games I don't enjoy even mildly.

That being said, it had some big glaring flaws that made me not enjoy it at all for replay-purposes,

For me the top 10 worst points about SSE are:

part 1: gameplay

1. It felt like playing Kirby: The Great Cave Offensive if except with floaty/sluggish smash characters as your protagonist. I generally like kirby games & gameplay; but you can't simply copy/paste gameplay design from a game with vastly different mechanics and expect it to work.

2. The enemies were clearly not designed to be smashed around. I get stamina for bosses & enemies with shields/defence mechanisms can be interesting but I disliked how taking down enemies was entirely based around doing a lot of damage, not smashing em away like in regular play. It made fighting more frustrating than fun.

3. The emphasis on platforming and jumping was honestly out of place when contrasted to how characters control. Only a handful of speedy characters with solid jumping skills actually felt like they were meant to get through adventure mode easily. Think Ganondorf is low tier in competitive play? Playing him is absolute torture in large segments of SSE.

4. Ladders add absolutely nothing good to Smash, at all. would've gone without em.

Part 2: design

5. The lack of nostalgic references in enemy design is appaling to me, I expected to have some good fun references early on due to the "rob squad" reveal, but having the only reference be in there cause "surprise surprise, rob is playable" felt insulting. In a crossover game I expected more common enemies than ROB and hammer bros.

6. Lets talk setting while we're at it. Part of me doesn't even feel like every location had to be an ultra specific game-referencing area; For a lot of games this could be sorta tricky I imagine. That being said .. subspace's scenery and locations felt very uninspired in many places. Jungle, forest, factory, dessert, more factory, castle ... all if it was sorta the same generic serious looking crap. Even if they're not gonna go out of their way to reference mario for a grassland area; Why not at least balance the more cartoony and more realistic areas?

7. Most enemies not being references to games aside I'm actually amazed how, despite not referencing games much at all the enemy designs are still all over the place. Each level or area didn't have it's own set of coherent or fitting designs, instead it's just a random mess of weird monster designs.

8. The characters look like shit too, and I almost feel like story mode might have something to do with this somehow.

Part 3: story

9. the cutscenes were pretty okay & there were 2-3 genuinly awesome ones. One problem: What the fuck was up with character's voices and general sound design? I get not wanting to make the characters talk but there's A LOT of awkward silent moments where you'd expect ..say: diddy and donkey to make monkey sounds.

10. The trophy-esque vague "is it really a cross over?" thing didn't bug me super much. The more you try to make it a *genuine* crossover the more weirdness can arise. That being said: Taboo came out of left field and him + his minions seem to have absolutely no thought put into them or their design.

Is subspace something taboo controls or is part of? I assume his minions are made out of it, but why are there robots? Not just talking about the ROB bots, guys like Duon and poo-on. Did Taboo make them? Did super ROB make them? Brawl clearly tried to be very "serious" about the story, so the lack of rhyme or reason to any of the designs bugs the hell out of me.

In some ways I think the original bus story could have been better. At least that premise sounded like it didn't take itself to seriously.

"Please let this be a normal Brawl…"
"With the Frizz? No way!"

EDIT: Oh hey, Member

Yo!

Instead of SSE, they should build a huge Metroidvania where only certain characters have access to certain areas

Hey there, that's not a bad idea. But drop the -vania, and just stick to Metroid and we are good (I love CV btw).

I would love to see themed stages, again. We don't need generic areas and enemies. The represented franchises have some awesome characters already made, and ready to be used. I say grab a handful of games, and use them (Mario, Zelda, F-Zero, Metroid, Kirby) and have like a final "Smash World" themed level, with Master/Crazy Hand and maybe a new original boss.

Kid Icarus Uprising is a game to me that might have been enjoyable if the control scheme wasn't awfully non-ergonomic and counter intuitive. I don't like the platforming bits cause it feels loose and kind of jank and it's hard to tell your perspective in those moments, at least for me. I didn't mind putting up with touchscreen controls in Phantom Hourglass and Star Fox Command (not that I'm crazy about those games), but Kid Icarus Uprising is just designed to hurt your hands.

Put it on the Wii U and revamp the handling while platforming and we might be getting somewhere.

Random thought while I was listening to the Killer Instinct 2013 soundtrack: What if Smash Bros had some dynamic soundtracks that changed depending on the match conditions? Hell, Pokemon already has a soundtrack that changes when your Pokemon gets low on health, so they can just remix that for a dynamic Pokemon theme.

I've only played it a bit, but yeah, this was my thought on Uprising.

My only problem with Uprising was with the on foot sections. The controls and camera didn't help. Other than that, I still very much enjoyed it. Now Nintendo needs to just skip to making a VR set to make the sequel for, forget the Wii U.

Yea, the camera was quite annoying for ground controls.
I've added Kokonoe and Toxi to my "list"
They're not wrong. The controls required me to use a stand. When you need to sell a stand as a peripheral for a handheld game, you know you fucked up somewhere.

"Only?" That's like half the game.

I guess I should've specified. I had more problems in certain land areas in the game than others. The ones being most problematic that I can recall were Pandora's labyrinth and Lunar Sanctum. Just could not get through these areas without dying from a misjump.

Yeah, the controls is Uprising's biggest flaw. This is coming from someone who was comfortable with them by the second level and mastered them by the fifth without ever using the stand. It sucks that my younger brother couldn't get the full experience out of the game because he was left-handed. Had to use homing weapons to compensate for the worse control option. He still loved the game though.

Ice Climbers is in my opinion one of the worst games Nintendo has ever made. It's an interesting idea but god damn it was broken to hell haha.

I honestly think it's a "well made Kid Icarus" because the platforming is less aggravating and it's pretty straightforward.

Nah. Pit is rollin' in hearts.

Something about falling to death and an endless vertical stage don't click to me.

I'm surprised it took as long as it did for someone to say this. Shadow and Knuckles would have the most variety for their movesets without getting too ridiculous.

I really want Dr. Eggman, hunched over in his Eggmobile. Just as much as Mario and Bowser, if not more, Sonic and Eggman are inseparable, and it was a crime that Eggman's only appearance in Brawl was a trophy. (I know Mario was in Smash 64 without Bowser, but that was a different situation.) Eggman would have 22 years of boss fights for them to draw move inspiration from, and most of them involved him bolting things to his Eggmobile. It could be the legged version from Sonic Adventure 2, if he needed to be grounded.

Plus he and Jill Dozer could be mech buddies.

In terms of more normal-sized Sonic characters, Blaze would have an interesting moveset, augmented by her flame powers. At the very least, I hope she makes it in as an assist trophy.

And DaBoss

this is my list of people whom I would stick my nose up to at a dinner party, in case anyone was wondering

I liked that game and I agree,

Man I hope for a non screwed Wii U Version with extra levels

Or a sequel

Oh yeah, Brawl's event matches sucked. Melee's were far more interesting IMO.
Agreed, and I also felt they were harder and more exciting.

"Time for a Checkup" is the one I remember taking forever to beat.

That would explain why I had so much trouble.

*rolls up newspaper*
::::(

Kid Icarus is amazing, but I agree it hurt my hands like crazy until I figured out how to hold it. If you hook your lower two fingers on your right behind the 3DS, you can use the stylus with your thumb and index fingers whole still having your middle finger for the R-button. It's difficult to describe, but one day Kid Icarus' control scheme just suddenly clicked, and once it did click it was absolutely fantastic and worked really well. It reminds me of Metroid Prime Hunters in that respect - both have really odd control systems that fuck up your hands (MPH's claw syndrome) until you figure out you're doing it wrong.

EDIT: That said, if you're left-handed, you're fucked. KI:U is basically unplayable for lefties. :(

I wish Bowser made it into the original as he was intended. I wonder how much he would have resembled his appearance in Mario 64.

I would love to see a stage based on the Sky Sanctury, with the Death Egg in the back launching the occasional Missle and Egg Robo at you (Stage Hazard). Then on a rare occasion, Eggman in the Eggmobile will come and swoop by with the Wrecking Ball equipment. And maybe even an even rarer occurance where instead of Eggman, we see Mecha Sonic (S3&K) piloting the Eggmobile. ;)

Yeah...brawl's event matches...and heck target test left alot to be desired. Minor complaint but i also hated when a regular smash character appears in multi man. They usually get an item and throw it to get an easy ko.-_-

That was one of the easier ones, if you waited long enough for the cloud to appear they'd follow you off the edge while you floated to safety.

I will rip my hair of my head if Sakurai doesn't ask Sega or Sega ask him to let Dr Eggman join the cast :(

Ya know, now that I think about it, I'd totally like to see Dr. Roboteggman as an Assist Trophy. Summon him & he appears a la Green Hill Zone boss, swinging the wrecking ball.

Fuck "Time for a check-up". That one took me at least 30 tries to beat it D:

GG if you didn't manage to kill one of them in your first stock (it was 2 stocks for everyone, wasn't it?).

I'm trying to think of a good way to implement Eggman into Smash without using the Egg Walker (I like Sonic Adventure 2 but I don't think he should use the Egg Walker in Smash) and I'm finding it tough unless they let him slightly float? Although, that'd be a smash first for a standing animation.

Not sure if I should post this, but I made a fan moveset for Eggman (a long time ago), and almost all of the moves are based on things he uses in the games. If you're interested, find it here.

Eh, Eggman is really strong, can break stuff with his fist (look at Lost World) really easy
