Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

So I completed the beginner quests. Now what do I do? What can I use for fuel?

I got so bored on the first planet I tried digging to the center of the planet.

Too sexy for my accent!

oh god this troll on chucklefish forums is hilarious to watch
he keeps repeating the same shit over and over
followed by please read before you post

I got one Legendary Weapon from a mini boss on the home planet, it looks like a huge club made out of alien bones and upon attacking it does;
.some kind of shotgun muzzle flash in dark green
..with matching sound
.shoots 5-7 bones spread apart in the air
.upon hitting terrain/tiles in meele range, it clears a huge 6-8 tile wide (and round) area in the front

But isn't effective digging anything but dirt, sand or other weak terrain/tiles, but its AOE at clearing terrain/tiles is HUGE.

Note: How do I take screen shots, because when I hover my mouse over the item description and tap F12..the item description disappears and the screen shot doesn't have the description window.

Server down again? Has to crash at least once a day right?

Its like clockwork. Server seems to remain stable for about 12 hours before it dies and needs a reboot.

If it crashes during the day, I can do something about it, but if I'm asleep, you guys need to wait until I drag my ass out of bed. Server is being rebooted as we speak, should be back up soon.

Oh man, just had the coolest experience! So 'cause the GAF server was down a couple of mates and myself joined a random other server and since certain things don't carry over we just wanted to dick around. First we dug down to the middle of the earth and made mud tunnels through the lava at the core of the planet and then flooded them.

But then my mate had a bright idea of making a ladder to the top of the map, so we figure fuck yeah let's give that a shot and didn't expect it to be quite as entertaining is it turned out. So I'm sure I'm not the first to find out that once you hit a certain height, shit gets all Chernobyl in the wilderness and you freeze to death within seconds was hilarious finding that out while we were peppered with homicidal birds. This is how we dealt with the insta-freeze cold lol

What I expected on the way up was to hit an invisible wall much like the middle of the planet where the camera stops panning (plan was to jump off and suicide when we hit the top). Did not expect to find anything

So we end up digging through the meteorite, filling it with campfires along the way ever so slowly and laughing our asses off at the monsters randomly jumping off the edge of the meteorite to their doom, wasn't anything special there so we figure this is a good spot to jump since the conditions are so hostile and progress upwards was reduced to a fraction of what it was.

aaaaaaaaand the other guys aren't equipped yet and they froze to death on the way down hahaha, we severely underestimated how far we'd gone up since the atmosphere turned to snap freezing. Took like a minute of just pure falling before I hit the ground. Was so much more satisfying than I expected when we started that little project.

I have my own server running at home. havent had any issues for the most part.

also, after going to sector B, where do I go from here? Do I do another distress beacon?
ALSO, is there a GAF group?

I found some caves that kept going down forever, and there were all these wee houses down there.
Weird variety of treasure chest? Strange.

Speaking of going down forever, is there any bedrock like in Minecraft, or is it theoretically unlimited? I know a planet should warp around, but since it's all flat I figure that won't happen. :P

Usually I end up falling 80 feet into lava partway down.

*edit* Oops I think I see the answer above me, that there is an invisible wall at the bottom, cool. Also I would NOT expect a meteorite to be up in the sky, nice.

Quote the OP, that's our GAF server (my computer).

your fancy new anvil will have a recipe for a robot. thats your new boss summon item.

yeah the brain grind has to be the most disappointing thing in the game right now.

Yup, according to the loot table it should take about 20 kills on average. (Something like 50% chance of getting a brain at all, then a 9% chance of superior brain if you got one)

Oh yeah, meant to mention earlier - if you want to see how many people are connecting, try using "netstat" from the command prompt on your server machine. You should be able to see all the connections for your local starbound port.

We should probably create one, would be easier for current players to keep in touch.
Do you want to make one since you are spearheading the server or would you want me to make it?

I was the one who took care of the more or less defunct TerrariaGAF Steam group, we hardly used it. You're more than welcome to start one up. No posting server info on it though.

I hope nobody thinks we're trying to be super secretive with the GAF server info just because. In Terraria we had people show up and build giant sky bridges over (or through) peoples' building projects, drain the oceans, use dynamite to blast giant hellevators, clear cut all the trees, loot peoples' houses and chests and generally behave obnoxiously. Those same people would also post our information on public databases, so random people would show up and just terrorize the server or trigger hardmode. There was one time a few of us were just hanging out and suddenly 30 people showed up and started leveling the place and spawning bosses; our info was made public.

The server/password info is kept secret so the GAF Universe is treated respectfully and things are left more or less as you left them the last time you played.

Just wanted to put that out there in case anyone was wondering why we're adamant about keeping our info private.

so how do i go to other sectors? do i have to plant the beacon and beat whoever comes? the last time a freaking huge ass flying saucer came and wrecked my house. is that the boss? is that when i go from tier1 to 2?

Speaking of server issues, it looks like the planet we were recently using to build stuff on has been reset.

Ehh? That can't be right, I didn't do any wipe on the server.

Yep.

Yeah, I figured you hadn't intentionally, but nothing that was built is there. It's as if the planet re-generated itself. Maybe that specific world's file got corrupted somehow, and the game just remade it.

I'll have to check the fridge and see how many useless brains are in there because I thought they might eventually add recipes (and I'm a packrat). :P

I think I got lucky though, and only took about 5-8 monsters to get a superior brain. The brain extractor damage is decent for beta sector anyway, like 14 per hit to finish off monsters.

Bubble boost is crazy awesome when you have 500 energy. You can pretty much fly 100% of the time if you do it right.

I popped in. Yeah, nothing was there :(

Yup, gafworld reset =/ World probably failed and so it generated a new one. Bah lol.

5.6% chance of getting a superior brain. There's an 80% chance of getting a brain in the first place and a 7% chance of it being superior.

[reasons for the server being private]

If anything, having the server private and password-protected doesn't seem ENOUGH to my paranoid self. As someone kind of new to Terraria-likes, I feel very nervous about having stuff like the houses you guys have build being entirely player-editable. Hell, I mentioned Retro's house to someone already logged into the server and immediately felt like perhaps I shouldn't have, just in case.

Fortunately, it seems like a handful of tools for improving security in this regard are in the works. Stuff like individually personalized username/passwords should help with word of mouth getting out, and with any luck planet or even zone permissions will be implemented soon.

Yep, just checked it myself, everything is gone.

That sucks. I think it's not the first time it happens, as I remember the planet wiping not long ago, and it wasn't connected to any of HaRyu's scheduled post-patch wipes. Might be simply "beta is beta". In any case, HaRyu, perhaps you might want to backup the universe, or at least GAFPrime, every now and then? It's just a matter of copying the "universe" folder, right?

The server/password info is kept secret so the GAF Universe is treated respectfully and things are left more or less as you left them the last time you played.

Starbound should have some kind of account system, where you need to be registered with a server to login.

So is GAFworld still gonna be at the coords listed in the twitter?

I build "important" stuff on my single player world; that's where I keep all my weapons, building supplies, etc. so if there's every any kind of crash / hack / grief, I'm not starting from scratch. Stuff I build online is always just to build for the pleasure of building, and I don't mind if people see it.

In fact, I prefer that they do, so they can see something I've built and maybe modify the idea a little for their own buildings. For a while there on the Terraria server, a bunch of us were building things back and forth and kind of inspiring each others' next project. A couple buildings I've done were inspired by other builders' works.

Beta gonna beta. I got a screenshot for that exact purpose, and I'm not terribly upset at the loss. I'll use what I learned from that little structure to make the next build better (no latticework for the arbors, pick a location with narrower trees, etc.). Until things are solid, I'm treating all my build projects like sandcastles.

Starbound should have some kind of account system, where you need to be registered with a server to login.

There's already a "Server account" field when you enter the address / password, so I'm thinking that's planned. If it doesn't happen, there are lots of modders who will step in to do it, like they did with Terraria and TShock. And since Starbound is actually open to moders instead of making their job difficult, it should be even faster and more up to date.

As for the GAFworld, probably. That's where people log in by default. Once the game is wipe-free and stable, I imagine whatever planet we pick for GAFplanet is going to start looking like Coruscant. I hope we find a really big one. I've seen a few suggestions on reddit about having 'industrial' and 'urban' planet biomes, that'd make for a sweet background. It will be interesting to see GAFers spreading to nearby worlds too, hopefully we can have Stargates and such to the major GAF population centers.

Keeping organized where we are is going to be pretty important, though I imagine anything in our celestial neighborhood is going to be colonized pretty heavily. I imagine when we get closer to launch we'll need to sit down and discuss where we want to settle. I'm in favor of easy coordinates (0,0 is nice and easy to remember) with a large solar system. In Terraria, we usually set the spawn to be in a safe place with a sort of 'tutorial' where we went over the basics (how to use wooden platforms, what to avoid, etc.), I'm thinking having a kind of "Tutorial Moon" would be cool here where we can keep it stocked with respectable starter weapons (nothing too good, that ruins the experience) and link it to the main planet via a stargate.

Start jotting down interesting planets now so we can reference them later. We can use the beta as a sort of planetary survey, cataloging interesting locations for the future GAF Empire.

I thought this was procedural, are the worlds not random?

They are, but things like dirt color, tree type, settlements and biome type appear to be the same no matter what. I want back to my first planet after the wipe and everything appeared to be about the same. You can find spreadsheets of planets with notable features out there as well.

They're procedurally generated, but the 'seed' of the planet is always the same.

I thought this was procedural, are the worlds not random?

It is procedural, but the coordinates of planets are the seeds. So if you go to the same coords/planet as someone else, it'll be the same. Of course, there's another seed for the universe itself which, if changed, should result in everything being different. By default everyone appears to have the same base universe seed.

Some minor differences may still happen. I've seen people point out that there was a specific Tech in a chest and someone else find a different one, for example, but for the most part things should be the same.
