I've never seen Sword Art Online, but it sounds like .hack

It is good/bad enjoyable like Valvrave or just bad bad? Might give this series a chance.

Bad bad.

Do you like incest sub plots? Do you like tentacle monster scenes? Do you like scenes where the cartoonishly evil villain goes to the female damsel in distress jokes about raping her, then actually sexually assaults her? Do you like a protagonist who is basically the most skilled player in the entire galaxy and is basically treated as an unstoppable one man army? Do you like when this protagonist begins to lose and then wins due to The Power of Love? Do you LOVE incest sub plots? Specifically "brother sister incest, but oh wait they are cousins so it is ok, but oh wait they grew up as brother and sister incest so it is still kind of fucked up but we wont treat it that way" incest plots? Do you like tsundere female love interests who have (strongly implied) sex with the protagonist one night, and then the next morning are embarrassed by being seen in lingerie by said protagonist? Do you like a show that showcases two young teenagers "adopting" an eight year old virtual daughter? Do you like ANGST!!!!!?

If so I highly recommend Sword Art Online.

Oh another thing I forgot about the show. First episode establishes that they can't actually feel pain. Cue every fucking episode in the future having people experiencing pain, pleasure, and things they physically should be incapable of feeling according to the first damn episode.

So Sword Art with guns!? Damn that means no awesome sword action.

"Awesome"? The only thing I can remember is Kirito bashing his sword against his enemies' shields, somehow hoping the shield would disappear if he was hitting it fast enough. The fight choreography was pretty shit.

Im looking forward to seeing animated death gun. SAO Extra did have Kikuoka for me and he was just as I expected so Im pleased on how they may handle his character in this next part. Just need to know who will voice Shinkawa Kyouki and etc.

Can't say I'm surprised this got a second season considering its popularity.
I might end watching some of this it is shown at the anime club I frequent, but my main source of entertainment from this will be reading episode impressions.

Well, at least the poster is cool. That's all I can say.

Also LOL @ Dennis asking why people watch it if it's so bad. The first problem, you see, is people that thinks is actually good.

The first few episodes are fun. Then it starts to get weird. Like suddenly everything is only about waifus and stuff.

This show sounds dumb.

And even dumber still.

I still have yet to watch Sword Art Online. People recommended it against me.

Everyone seems to bring up Sword Art Online in relation to the Oculus Rift. While I personally think of .hack//.

I've been a big fan of .hack for a long time. The anime made me buy my first graphics card and my first MMORPG, Final Fantasy XI. And made me dream of uploading my consciousness in a virtual anime world and living as a girl.

Long before I learned many things about emerging technologies and predictions about future technologies. Anime like like .hack inspired me to think of a future where things like what happened to Tsukasa were possible.

I'm glad to see that other anime may be inspiring people, as well. Though, considering what some people have to say about it. Perhaps it would be better if people were comparing the Oculus Rift making .hack's the World a reality, rather than Sword Art Online. I do kind of wish many of the references to the Oculus Rift were for .hack, rather than Sword Art Online.

This show sounds dumb.

It should be noted that the author of the original novel never played an MMORPG before writing it. Hence there's a lot of dumb moments involving the game itself. Like beta testers being treated as "cheating scum".
Not to mention that they spend TWO YEARS trapped in the game with little attempts at trying to get out. The goal is simply "get to the 100th floor", and they don't even do that! No, the protagonist finds out the guy that trapped them is in the game as well and he defeats him "early". God this show is fucking stupid.

Also, the author was 14 when he wrote the first book. It would explain the infamous "Chapter 16.5"

I would only suggest to do so just to stay on the same page with otakus who you know have good taste but also love this show because I'm just flabbergasted that some of my friends adore their show despite being very cool people.

ToonamiGAF ripping this absolute pap to shreds is one of the highlights of my Saturdays, so hopefully the dub makes it over before too long.

Wait, can someone explain how SAO came into being?

First season (so far, dub watcher) is an enjoyable trainwreck. Even if more of the same, hype, excite, giveittome, etc.

All kidding aside, Sword Art has some fantastic visuals and some pretty good animation.

The story is laughable, but if you liked MMOs as a kid there might be a feeling of nostalgia attached to it.

Not sure why Kirito godmoding over everything would cause MMO nostalgia.

Log Horizon actually feels like a real MMO, unlike whatever the hell is going on in SAO. There's a reason that SAO feels like it was written by a guy who has no idea how a real MMO works, and that's because it was.

The show is even dumber than it sounds.

My favorite part is when the protagonist gets an item that lets him
revive anyone who dies
, as long as the item is
used within 5-10 seconds of that person dying
. He gives this item to a friend.

Cue the finale of season 1. The main character
"dies"
and the friend who has that item is in the same location. Instead of the show logically having the item used and rewarding the viewers who remembered its damn existence, they instead opt for
some nonsensical power of love or whatever to have Kirito not die even though his HP dropped to nothing.
. What a fucking waste.

This is one of the reasons Log Horizon is so good, feels like it was created by someone with experience.
Its got some action, it even manages a little bit of waifu stuff, has MMO world politics for crying out loud.
Also most major characters are max level from the start so it mostly avoids that crap.
And on top of that it doesn't take itself too seriously like SAO which was a huge problem.

It is actually a little weird how none of the characters in Log Horizon seem to give a shit about not being able to see their parents/siblings/children that aren't in the game world.

This show started off great but went to hell so quickly, the production values and character designs were so good, shame about the weirdo sister love and rape plots.

Anime needs to stop treating rape/sexual assault like it's sexy.

I've heard that the anime acknowledges the reality of crossplaying. And that the many of the female characters in this, identify as or at least are biologically male outside of the game.

I wonder if some of the people who are sexually violated in this anime, are biologically male characters?

It makes me scared because I see myself in that position someday. I play as female characters, generally, because I want to be a girl. I don't play as male characters unless they're more androgynous than the female characters. I'm definitely going to continue using video games to fulfill my desire to be a girl in the future. And when extremely realistic virtual worlds exist in the future, I'm scared that someone might try to rape me through it. It could be possible. And that really scares me. I hope that there will be safeguards in place to prevent that, when we have realistic virtual worlds.

You've heard wrong. The anime has one scene at the beginning of episode 1 where everyone is forced out of their ingame avatar into bodies that look like their real life bodies. And you get the "haha some of the players who had female avatars are actually male!"

That's what my friend says

The best part of SAO is when the main character mentions in a throwaway line how there is a limited amount of XP in the game world, and strongly implies that mobs don't respawn.

The game he is playing now is set in an American MMO, that of course has guns.

Pretty minor spoilers that sets up the main story but I'll spoiler it anyway.

People that are playing this game are dying. I could tell you why.

Is crossplaying even a big deal? A small deal? To my experience it means absolutely nothing. I almost pick gender at the flip of a coin. Some of my favorite MMO characters have been male, others female. Same with other games that allow you to choose.

Though I suppose a VR game does have a further aspect of inhabiting the character's body. Weird how first person playing as Samus or Chell or something doesn't cause a blip but go a step further and suddenly it's important.
