Welcome to another year of Indie madness. Stats of last year:
~350,000 combined thread views
~9200 combined posts
We saw the release of 436 games we covered. Out of which we saw impressions on ~300 of them here in this very thread.
We peeked into the development of 411 future games, some of which released, others not yet.

For this month: 38 games in the released part, 32 games in the future part. Last year was certainly packed with amazing under-the-radar releases and even though january doesnt contain quite as many releases as most older threads, the amount of quality in january looks to be surprising high again. Also remember that we still have the ongoing goty 2013 voting! We (MB and me) are also preparing a little surprise for you from march onwards. We liked the idea, and if it catches on will consider doing it on a permanent basis. More info in the upcoming march thread.

We will also have a vote on the best games of the month in the last week of the thread. The results for june can be seen below. For some first time readers that wonder about my definition of "recent": We didnt have any major Indie thread in 2012 on GAF, so we are also catching all the titles that slipped through our net last year. Anyway, have fun with the games from this month!

If you want to suggest a game that has recently released or that looks interesting, but hasnt released yet, please follow the following formatting structure:

Released games:
TITLE - PRICE (PLAT)
LINK

DESCRIPTION TEXT
Not yet released games:
TITLE - PLAT
LINK

DESCRIPTION TEXT

Copy the appropriate content and add the proper information for the black writing. Please only include 1 link and 1 image. I tried making it a bit failsafe, so it should be able to deal with 2 links or images as well, but 1 is safer.

If the game is free, then put "Free" as the price, otherwise please use $ or € for the price. You can also include more than one game per post (like the Screenshot saturday posts), but please stick to the above format for every entry.

If someone posts a non-proper formatted post, I'd appreciate if you could repost the game with the same info in the proper format.

Hey! I assume you are new in this thread series and want to see what we were up to? Or you didnt have enough time to play through all of the games from the last month but still want to catch up with the best ones? Then this list is for YOU! These were the games we enjoyed the most in the previous thread, voted on by the community (More thorough descriptions and impressions in the previous thread, especially the last few pages with the voting):

1. Westerado - Free (Browser)
westerado3-620x.jpg

http://games.adultswim.com/westerado-action-online-game.html

Everyone should give this game a try. Westerado takes one of my favorite genres, the western, and gives it an atmospheric pixel art look, with gorgeous sunsets and windswept cemeteries. The game revolves around a randomly generated murder mystery as you search for your family's killer across an open world, slowly piecing together the identity and location of the killer through clues from NPCs and quests. Poker in the saloon, bandits in the mines, buffalo roaming the fields, Westerado is a fun and engaging experience worth playing.

2. Fjords - Min. 7$ (PC)

https://gumroad.com/l/FJORDS

Anyone of you liked Starseed Pilgrim? Same basic premise, you are exploring this game but dont know ANYTHING and need to find out what to do, where to do it and how the game reacts to your actions. Its mysterious and can be considered a big "puzzle" where you are tasked with finding out how to navigate/progress through this world. Everything is held simple, from graphics to sounds, but the dev put enough polish into it so it doesnt feel "cheap" by any means. Surprisingly mystifying animations, really well done soundtrack design and the dev fully succeeded in giving the players several tools to explore the world, which feel rewarding to figure out.

2. Risk of Rain - Free Alpha/$9,99 (PC)

An action roguelike likened to The Binding of Isaac. It really calls to mind the progression of The Binding of Isaac, with its randomised item lists and enemy encounters, though you're a lot more manoeuvrable in this game with a dodge-roll that makes you invulnerable, and plenty of ropes to climb up and out the way of marauding creatures. 4. One Way Heroics - $1,99 (PC)
bandicam+2013-11-27+12-42-06-840.jpg

http://playism-games.com/games/onewayheroics/

The game is basically a turn based roguelike sidescrolling dunge... er... overworld crawler. Darkness approaches from the left and you are escaping from it, exploring the world, beating demons, bartering with merchants, upgrading your equipment, levelling up and generally kicking ass until you are strong enough to finish off the demon lord and saving the world. And its damn good. If you want to read more: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=727834

4. Paper Sorcerer - Free Demo/ $5 (PC, Mac, Linux)
255186_orig.png

http://www.ultrarunaway.com/

A dungeon crawler that oozes with charme because it looks unbelievably pretty at times, has plenty of content in the campaign, especially considering the difficulty levels and it seems to be an overall very competent dungeon crawler with some deductions for the puzzles, but overall its a joy to play. Definitely recommended.

4. Lily Looking Through - Free Demo/$9,99 (PC)
lFbm1CX.jpg

http://store.steampowered.com/app/250030/

Help this heroine through a variety of enchanting environments brimming with magic and wonder, as she seeks to rewrite the past, change the present, and unlock the ultimate mystery. An animated point-and-click adventure for all ages. It is a bit simple, but also rather charming. Certainly doesnt hurt to try the demo to see if its your cup of tea.

I noticed there are a few noteworthy, and relatively unknown, projects that deserve a shoutout here because I feel that they share a common interest with the people in this thread. I talked to the guy from Pixabyte and MetaVendetta and both are very enthusiastic about the things they love and figured you might appreciate the shoutout as well. If you enjoy anything here or want to give feedback, let these guys know via their websites or also here in this thread. If you appreciate something, let people know. A heads up can sometimes very valuable.

A schoolteacher wakes to find his entire life is missing from public record. His bank account, his health care, his credit cards are all frozen when the government declares him to be a non-person. As he takes the steps necessary to pull his life back together, he becomes aware of nefarious forces that have conspired against him. The truth, it seems, is rarely pure and never simple. Conspirocracy starts in an exaggerated, highly-bureaucratic re-imagining of Toronto, Canada. Medical droids serve as gatekeepers between patients and doctors. The activities of beggars and buskers are regulated and tasked. Airport security is taken to an more extreme, disconcerting level. As the player, you will have your work cut out for you finding what you're looking for when the system is stacked heavily against you.

Tetrobot is the world's most popular and reliable robot, but he's not perfect. That's why I, Maya, have built him a microscopic little brother, Psychobot. Help me guide Psy through Tetrobot's cogs and circuits: by swallowing blocks of matter and spitting them out, we can repair anything. Learn how pipes, lasers, fans and other electronic devices work, learn how to alter the chemical properties of slime, and collect all the memory blocks that you find on the way. The owners of damaged Tetrobots all around the world rely on us because we are the only people who can repair their precious robots.

FTL and Dwarf Fortress have a baby, with multiplayer! The world will be as dynamic and malleable as I can make it, but it won't just be a sandbox that lets you build your own ships and space stations. At it's core it will be a space captain RPG with a strong emphasis on exploration and character building. As in any space ship RPG, customizing and upgrading your ship will be central to the character development. In Wayward Terran Frontier I have taken it a step further by basing ship design on a tile-based system of modules and components. You design every single pixel of your ship from modules.

The Novelist is what I'm most excited to try next. Will wait till the price drops a little, though.

A Crimson Searchlight looks very intriguing as well, can't wait to hear what people think of it.

Took your time with that third post :P

I hope Shahid subscribes to your excellent threads too.

Plenty of games in these threads I'd love on more platforms, yeah.

A new year and insane amount of quality indies to come. Let's keep the momentum of these threads going, it's been a pleasure to help contribute and watch the threads grow over the months.

So what are your top 5 most anticipated of 2014? That's probably a near impossible task to narrow it down to so few, but...

1. Distance
2. Hyper Light Drifter
3. Gods Will Be Watching
4. Rain World
5. Cloudbuilt

That 5 spot was tough, between Apotheon, Cloudbuilt, Dex, Confederate Express, Claire, and so many others. But Cloudbuilt's visuals and open-ended fast paced platforming really appeals to me. However, Distance was easy to assign first; along with Facade, Nitronic Rush introduced me to indie gaming, and I've been anticipating its spirtual successor for a long time now

Fun fact: We featured One Way Heroics in the first and last thread of 2013.

Some more Bass Blocks info. Thanks for posting about it Toma, would have missed the game otherwise
Trailer | Greenlight | IndieDB
Bass Blocks is a top down RPG shooter. Massive procedurally generated open world environments, and deep weapon and character customizability ensure a unique experience every round. In classic roguelike fashion a new character and world awaits after every death, but you can carry a fraction of your loot and experience between each life to explore deeper into the ever shifting and musical world of Bass Blocks. Explosions, weapon, and enemies all trigger, swirl and weave to the beat in a whimsical and seemingly spontaneous manner.

The gameplay is fast, the bosses are soul crushingly difficult, and the world itself is worse, but if you manage to craft the incredibly powerful weapons found within the game you just might stand a chance.

There's a demo on IndieDB

Yeah, looked really neat to me too. Those finds are the reason I look through the Desura releases of the past month for each new thread. Though there were way, way less interesting games from the Desura releases for the january thread than any other thread before. Really glad it had a few interesting ones nonetheless.

So what are your top 5 most anticipated of 2014? That's probably a near impossible task to narrow it down to so few, but...

Indiestatik's Top 100 certainly helped me with this. There's actually quite a lot that I'd been anticipating and forgot about during the chaos of end of the year lists.

1. Nidhogg - More of a caught up in the moment kind of choice, but I've really wanted this for a long time. The new trailer took that excitement over the edge.
2. That Dragon, Cancer
3. The Witness
4. Everybody's Gone To The Rapture
5. Jazzpunk

Other stuff in no particular order:
Hohokum, A.N.N.E, Storyteller, Chasm, Octodad: Dadliest Catch, Spire, Apotheon, Cloudbuilt, Routine, Super Time Force, Hyper Light Drifter, Mushroom 11, Broken Age

New thread! <3

I noticed it when I was going through all the threads to choose the games for my 2013 voting list.

I also think that 350,000 views over 1 year is quite neat for Indie Games. I mean, sure, a lot of these are from the thread regulars, but its still kinda impressive considering most of these games are extremely low-profile.

Swap - $9.99 (currently on sale for $4.99 until 1/4) (PC)
leve2ab.jpg

http://swapgame.zxq.net/mediafiles/index.html

SWAP is a first person puzzle game, where the player must use a mechanic called SWAPPING to progress through each level. SWAPPING allows the player to select a object or colored tile then select another object or colored tile, and then the two objects or tiles will SWAP places. However not all objects are SWAPABLE, and each object has a purpose or a thing it can do. You must construct a way to pass each level by using the unique properties of each object combined with the ability to SWAP them throughout each level.

Don't know if any of you are big IOS gamers, but I'm really enjoying Jet Car Stunts 2 so I'll leave the impressions I posted on TA forums here.

JCS2 isn't a racing game. It's a high speed precision platformer where you control a rocket car. The most similar game is probably Trackmania on PC, but honestly I like JCS better than Trackmania.

After playing for a while now, I can say the game is a huge improvement and evolution over the first game. Everything that made the first JCS so good is back, and bigger than ever before. For $5, you technically get 120 levels, but it's actually around 220 because all the Platforming levels and Time Trials have alternate Hard versions. And that's not including the insane tracks people will create in the level editor, or the Race levels, or the Stunt mode.

All the vehicles control differently and each one needs to be learned and mastered if you want to perfect every level, from the familiar physics of the original vehicle to the Jet, which is more plane than car. From the get go, the levels and environments just seem more advanced and challenging than the first game, with bigger gaps, more complex tracks, grind rails, loops, and more. And I don't know what magic True Axis used, but somehow the physics and controls feel even tighter and I felt that the first Jet Car Stunts had the best tilt controls of any IOS game I've played. I know some people avoid tilt-only controls, but I wouldn't have JCS any other way; the controls are precise, accurate, responsive, and simple to learn but tough to master

Don't be put off by the IAP: you get a handful of levels to try for free, and then the full game is $4.99, or you can simply purchase different level packs suited to what interests you. So if you don't like time trials or never plan on using the editor, then only buy the platforming levels. No freemium crap here.

The only blemish IMO, a minor blemish compared to all the quality content, is the level editor. Now the editor is fun to use. Hell, I spent two hours just messing around. But the key words there are "messing around." It just seems too difficult to make something that feels planned out and intended. However I will say this is the first editor that becomes easier to use once you become a better player. I think once I've gotten better at playing the game, the true depth of editor will be revealed, but for people who just want to jump in and create a complex track or create something with some artistic vision in mind, it will feel too hard and random

So if you can't already tell, I highly recommend Jet Car Stunts 2

The flying mechanics in Raetikon are really satisfying and the game looks really charmingly distinct, but... the gameplay seems a bit.. bland overall? Its just collecting these slivers, right? I saw that they included some interaction elements with the environment which are neat the first and second time, but other than that.. hm. Might need to revisit when not being as tired.

Just played some more Paper Sorcerer, the puzzle style ddidnt improve, but on the next level its at least a little bit easier to figure out.

Oh and the soundtrack just got totally western on me. Also, if we reach the next page without me, please continue posting the GOTY voting post top of the page.

Whatever became of the dog sled game from months back? With school I sort of lost track of everything after October.

NIDHOGGGGG.

My school (NYU game graduate game design program) has an arcade cabinet with a Nidhogg build. It's a couple of months old, but it looks like the basic gameplay is in line. It's just the castle level.

It's a spectacular game. It pairs the tension of fighting with the speed of mario. There's a ton of depth to it, and lots of ways to attack, defend feint and counter. As we've discovered strategies, and counter strategies the level of play has only gotten better. For example. One guy discoverd a technique called "fast advance." See in Nidhog, if you do small movements your sword stays active, but once you hold in a direction for a bit, you lower your sword and run. It was discovered that you can tap the stick repeatedly to build speed while having your sword up. It's called a fast advance, and it's nasty. I figured out the counter via disarms though.

So here's how fencing works, there is three heights for your sword, if you swords are at the same height they clang. If the swords are in two different planes, but you time it right, and move your sword into their plane, you disarm them. Fast advance is especially vulnerable to this, because you can't adjust the sword while doing it.

There's a ton of stuff like that. For a while everyone was dive kicking, but other's figured out how to jump and throw the sword, or how to move back, and jump back in to punish. There's head games everywhere, especially around ledges and doors. Once you see someone make a perfect throw to knock out a guy holding a ledge, YOU WILL CHEER.

It's a damn fine game, I'm so pumped it's officially coming out.

This game looks so neat. It's artwork isn't "beautiful" but still charming and occasionally complicatedly pretty. It's all sketchy and papery. Real cool. A lot of stylized designs like Monty Python animation or different cartoony styles.

ballpoint2-70-2013-02-19-23-15-03-00.jpg

Ahem, anyways. This is a SHMUP. But it's really interesting. You run around in a 2D platforming area, occasionally finding collectables, but mostly just talking to people and accepting missions. Once you accept a mission, you launch up to a brief (or long) SHMUP section, collecting ink, that ends in a boss and are graded and rewarded based on how many lives you have at the end of it (1 is Bronze, 3 is Silver, 5 is Gold). There is also an "Endless Space" area you can go to at any time as long as you have the units of payment for it and it's pretty much a place to collect ink for upgrades. You start where you left off or died last time in neverending waves of enemies.

The upgrades and combat is where it actually is a bit different than standard SHMUP fare. You have a top and a bottom weapon, a nose which determines your overload ability which you get by killing enemies without being hit for an extended period, and a body which determines health and passives your ship has. What's cool is that a lot of the weapons aren't standard fare. There are three main types; projectiles, melee and shields.

Projectiles are your bullet weapons and are actually quite varied. There's one that fires in diagonals, one that fires a buckshot cluster that spreads as it gets further away, one that fires a slow shot that pierces and so on. They really vary it up a lot.

Melee is where the game gets really interesting. Melee attacks mean you have to get your ship close to the enemies. They are generally much stronger than projectiles, but as a result are more risky to use. There are enemies that can only be damaged by melee so it pays to have one equipped. Likewise, there are lots of types. Swords that slash near it in an arc, a spear that shoots in front with greater range and hits enemies on coming back but doesn't hit above or below you, a blade that simply circles your ship, a chainsaw and so on. They are really cool and fun to use.

Last is shields, which are fairly simple; they block attacks. They are likewise varied in how they are used, some reflecting shots but having less strength, some a wider area, some spiky so they do damage if you hit with them. They can be real life savers on certain bullety bosses.

And that's pretty much it. You're a little squiggly doodle who comes out of the Life Spring and is immediately conscripted into the war against the Logistics or whatever they're called which are trying to oppress you with their straight lines and harsh angles. You just gotta be free and squiggly!

The game is cheap and mad fun. It's on Steam too with a bajillion cards and achievements.

Shiny new thread - the best thing to wake up to.

Going through that Indiestatik list the other day, the amount of games that look interesting/promising was overwhelming. I don't imagine this year going much differently than last year, though: A handful of big titles every month that everyone talks about and then a number of smaller demos/proofs of concept/game jam stuff/flash games that I will appreciate just as much (like the games I voted for in December that totally got robbed!).

That said, much like Toma, I don't really like to spend much time in anticipation of something. There's to many interesting games out right now - whether they came out weeks or months or years ago - that deserve our attention.

I do not know if the December thread posted it, but since there are a couple games on here that came out in December... *shrugs*

I wanna add to this Ballpoint Universe.

I had forgotten about this game. Looks like it came out in May? Totally lost track of it. Thanks for the impressions!

QbQbQb is the featured game on IndieGameStand

I will probably get this. Had my eye on it since we featured it in our thread.

Posted this in the December thread, but thought it's pretty cool so I'll share it here as well:

Fantastic Reddit thread about Catacomb Kids
http://www.reddit.com/r/CatacombKid...cial_findings_thread_share_the_small_details/

I'll single out some of my favorites:
- You can create a flaming whirlwind by firing a flame spell at it. Very useful for crowd control!
- If you start burning, your spell book may turn to a crisp and become unusable.
- You can eat your own severed limb
- Haste lets you run across the surface of water. Ice Blast freezes water
- You can boil potions and make them fill the air. This is particularly useful for beneficial potions, as you can get their effects to last longer. Boil that regeneration potion and you'll be able to get regen, go into a fight, and then hop back to the regen cloud and get the effect again.
- Lightning will hurt anything wet, including yourself.
- Standing in front of fire sources dries you off really quick
- Breaking a potion spills its contents on the floor, and affects the player if it touches it (and presumably anything else it touches).

So what are your top 5 most anticipated of 2014? That's probably a near impossible task to narrow it down to so few, but...

1. Distance
2. Hyper Light Drifter
3. Gods Will Be Watching
4. Rain World
5. Cloudbuilt

 1. The Witness (Number None Inc.)
 2. Pix the Cat (Pastagames)
 3. FaeVerse Solitaire (Subsoap)
 4. Gorogoa (Jason Roberts)
 5. Miegakure (Marc ten Bosch)

Thanks Toma for making me aware that there was another Hexcells game. If I had to throw critism at the original I would say that it only really became enjoyably hard around the final two worlds, more levels that continue the end game difficulty sound awesome.

I've been trying to figure out what it is about Indie games that really appeals to me. It's as if the simplicity of some of the games just really is enjoyable and fresh. It's weird to say but some of the big flashy AAA titles just don't do it for me anymore.

Some of the games like Risk of Rain and Rogue Legacy are so generic in graphics but just so damn fun. Graphics will never be the main draw again for me to games and I hate that it HAS been in the past.

I'd love follow up impressions from you. If it takes more than 2-3 hours to solve these, I'd probably pick it up as well.

First time looking in one of these threads, but Risk of Rain should have won last month! :P

Geez it's kind of overwhelming how many games there are listed to come out this month. And a whole bunch look good.

Maybe I've avoided this thread in the past for a reason. XD

Only because you didnt play Westerado and Fjords :p

or did you? Hmmm? ;p

Guilty as charged!

I'm busy with the kids tomorrow but I will try and remember to give them a whirl! :P

Westerado is an easy recommendation, but Fjords is probably... for a specific kind of audience. I can easily see others not liking the $7 investment or appreciating the game at all. For me , it was one of the best Indies last year and I really loved the gameplay and its approach to games in general.

If you dont like being dropped in a world without any sort of guide and without a clear goal, you should probably stay clear of it. Though that doesnt mean that there IS no goal or that there isnt any help ingame. Its just not what people would expect from a videogame these days. And I loved it for it.

My short write up recommendation:

MB's impressions:

Edit: That doesnt mean Risk of Rain isnt "fun" though. Its a very good game, I just feel like... Westerado and Fjords seem to be more special to me, even if RoR definitely seems to have a higher replayability/more content.

I recently played through Hexcells Plus and it's really, really good. It's much harder and more intricate than the first, and the most complex puzzles easily takes 30 minutes (probably considerably more, I didn't time it) each to complete. Highly recommended.

This is what RPS had to say:

John Walk @ RPS said:
If you blitzed through the first games’ puzzles and consoled yourself with the super-low price, this time I think people will be celebrating the absolute bargain. It’s going to take an awful lot longer to get through things this time, simply because every puzzle is so much more involved and complex. They’re puzzles to get buried in, wrangle over, declare to the room that there simply isn’t a logical next move and plan on complaining to someone somewhere, before realising yourself and spotting what you’d missed.

Very good to hear, thanks :)

I love that developer, you guys should check out "Sentinel" from him if you havent yet. So slick, fun and challenging. And a great soundtrack.

Here's the Ludum version of Rezoner's Potato Lagoon, part of the QbQbQb beat the average bonus on Indie Game Stand.

(Toma, should it be « Voting Results "Best of December" » in the Overview and Voting Results sections?)

That march thing hasnt been mentioned or changed since... last year march, haha.

Thanks, I just changed it to "last month" to get rid of that issue :p
