Super Smash Bros Wii U & 3DS Thread 4: New Year, Old Arguments

Then it's literally impossible unless you're already holding up before it's possible to input a jump. The d-pad is not pressure sensitive. You're either hitting up, or you're not hitting up.

That was actually inaccurate on my part, I just checked. You can map jump to other buttons, but you can't reserve up on the D-Pad exclusively for directional input. You can set it to shield and grab though, so one of those might work to tilt from.

How is the quality playing Wii U games?

It was annoying at first as playing Wii U on my CRT, I had really bad overscan. A lot worse than PS3 and Xbox 360 for some reason. But then one of the firmware updates included a "screen size" option and I was able to shrink the picture to fit the TV.

Looks really good now.

Now my only problem with the Wii U is that it doesn't have an optical out and my surround system doesn't have HDMI inputs, so I have to play all my games in stereo sound through my TV speakers :/

To anyone paying more attention than myself:

Have we seen signs that character models/animations have been improved as the pictures of the day have continued to roll out? I am referring to issues like clipping, texture detail, or etc.

Whether intended or not, these character models have been subjected to enormously more scrutiny during production those in any other game that I can think of. Have we seen any signs that the production staff are continuing to clean them up or are we only seeing essentially final work?

But really, what's going on with that leg?
Dress physics and collision not set up? Seems like an odd choice for a photo considering.

lol, just noticed that.

Maybe it is her dress and the effect under it just makes it look like her leg? Does her dress have that fabric seam in it?

Link's skirt clipped during an animation early on in the shots, in later shots it didn't.

I'll see if I can find the shots for you.

Ok, so do the people who play with Gamecube controllers or other more complicated control setups usually use a separate button for jumps so it won't interfere with tilt actions in that way?

Yes. A lot of people turn off up to jump and just use buttons.

I haven't been paying much attention to the character models but the lighting in the game has definitely improved since it was first shown off.

Hopefully this time the option to disable up to jump can be set so it is always disabled by default and not tied to names.

Thanks.

I'm not even that concerned about specific details, it's more that is nice to know they are making improvements. As with many others in this thread, I can't help but notice defects in the daily shots. It feels good to know that, if we see something, the development staff probably sees the same thing and they are working on them.

I do. My controls are weird though.
Jump is turned off, Y is jump, X is grab, Z and L are both normal attack.

Hopefully this time the option to disable up to jump can be set so it is always disabled by default and not tied to names.

For why? Tied to names allows everyone to use their personalized controller setup without hassle. I typically have a bunch of names on mine with various popular alt schemes so we don't have to waste time in the menu

It's really annoying to scroll through a giant list of names whenever you start playing or have to swap with someone. Nobody I play with uses up to jump so just disabling it game-wide is fine with me.

I do want to see them up the player count for online, though. Imagine 16 player Smash. It would actually manage to make Hyrule Temple kind of fun.

Both options would be good then. Have profiles for those who use specific controls and also general jump toggles.

Tonight is the night of something awesome! [Not a character]

fine.

However, you have to eat a peanut butter sandwich because if you don't, the world will explode making all of this pointless.

Fine by me. C: Only if you eat... a sandwich with only Strawberry/Grape Jam/Jelly!

Question, for this thread and all other hype threads?

Thus begins the road to e3? Has there been a road to e3 thread? Is that a thing? If not can i make it and style it like the road to wrestlemania?

I think giving each character their own home stage would be a good idea. We have so many good stages from the past three smashes we don't have to have a massive amount of new stages especially when each version will have their own exclusive stages. Heres an idea of how it could work:
(Wii U/3DS)
Mario:Delfino Plaza (Brawl)/3D Land
Luigi: Luigi's Mansion (Brawl)/ LM2 stage
Peach: Princess Peach's Castle (Melee)/Peach's Castle (64)
Bowser: Bullet Train*/ Bowser's Airship*
DK: Jungle Japes (Melee)/ Kongo Jungle (64)
Diddy Kong: DKC:TF stage/DKCR stage
Yoshi: Yoshi's Island (Brawl)/ Yoshi's Island (Melee)
Wario:Wario Ware Inc (Brawl) / Wario Land
Rosalina: Mario Galaxy/Rainbow Road
Link: Skyloft/Great Bay (Melee)
Zelda: Hyrule Temple(Melee)/Sanctuary*
Ganondorf:Bridge of Eldin (Brawl)/Gerudo Valley
Toon Link: Pirate Ship (Brawl)/ Spirit Train
Pit: Skytown (Brawl)/ KI:U stage
Samus: Pyrosphere/Planet Zebes (64)
Kirby: Epic Yarn stage/Canvas Curse stage
King DeDeDe: Green Greens (Melee)/Dreamland (64)
Metaknight: Halberd (Brawl)/ Fountain of Dreams (Melee)
Pikachu: X/Y stage
Pokemon Trainer: Pokemon Stadium 2 (Brawl)/ Pokemon World Cup*
Jigglypuff: Pokefloats (Melee)/ Saffron City (64)
Lucario: Pokemon Colloseum*/Spear Pillar (Brawl)
Marth: Altea/Aero Fierox
Ike: Castle Siege(Brawl)
Ness: Onett(Melee)/Fourside (Melee)
Lucas: New Pork City
Fox: Corneria (Melee)/Sector X(64)
Falco: Lylat Cruise(Brawl)
Wolf: Venom (Melee)
Ice Climbers: Icicle Mountain (Melee)/Summit (Brawl)
Mr. G&W: Flatzone (Melee)/Flatzone 2 (Brawl)
R.O.B.: Consoles/Handhelds

I think you get the general idea. I'm missing a few and this idea doesnt exclude more stages for different franchises outside of their home stage. I put * next to a few stage ideas I had:

Bullet Train could be based off SM3DW's Bullet Trains enemies such as the Koopalings and Kamek could appear in the background sending obstacles such as Cat Bullet Bills.

Bowser's Airship would be a similar thing with Bowser Jr. or Boom Boom/Pom Pom appearing in the background sending out Tanooki Bullet Bills

Sanctuary could be based on ALTTP/ALBW's Sanctuary in the forest with the graveyard nearby.

Pokemon World Tournament would be based on X2/Y2's world tournament where various E4 members, Gym Leaders, Rivals and Champions such as Misty, Cynthia, Brock, Blue, N, etc. could appear in the background and send out their signature poke as a stage hazard similar to the stadiums.

Pokemon Colloseum would just be a Colloseum based on the console games.

An idea for ROB would be his stages would take place on hardware developed by Nintendo. Consoles would be on the Wii U version and Handhelds on the 3DS version.

Your post made me think... what if the boxing stage belongs to DeDeDe?

Your post made me think... what if the boxing stage belongs to DeDeDe?

Well, after your comment I looked into it.

Dedede's ring looks kind of similar... if you ignore the fact the sides of the arena use different colors, the missing dreamland crowd and decorations, and Dedede's face. Seems like it's more of a generic stage with "Smash Bros" slapped onto it than anything else.

Still, there are a lot of remarkable similarities. The mat is blue, and the look is very similar. But not similar enough.

I think it's probably just the new "Final Destination/Battlefield". It seems to owe Smash Bros more than anything else.

A 5th player on the game pad messing with the stage would be awesome...but there is very little chance of that happening.

I doubt there will be any gamepad integration at all, actually. Maybe some photo thing or something.
