Destiny's team size is now around 500 people

I was under the impression GTA V's team was close to 1000.

And some of the Ass Creed games were up to 500 as well.

The entirety of Bungie's staff I imagine.

With such a staff, and years of development, the budget for this game has to be record setting... Blowing GTA V out of the water.

I am legitimately scared for Bungie. As much as I've seen of the videos and gameplay, I still don't get what makes it truly addictive or revolutionary.

That's so many people man. I can only imagine how big the space is where they work. Can't wait to play this game.

The art team by itself is almost 150 people, huge number of people working on this game.

Can't wait to play it, going to be awesome.

I get the impression these are actually almost all Bungie employees instead of contractors.

If true that's pretty fucking insane. Even at larger companies that have that many internal people on a project it seems like they're usually rolling teams (some are working on this year's AC, some on next year's, etc). That could be happening here too I suppose though if they're putting out new content/expansions on a regular basis, but still crazy.

These games come out and i'm always left wondering what these many hundreds of people actually did. It's not like an AC, or RE6 ever blew away what we had before, so what's the point? It just seems like a massive waste of money and (possibly) talent.

Still not really feeling this game, though. They should start doing some in-depth gameplay videos, show the scope of the game. All we see is the same rehashed footage and screenshots of characters.

Many of them are "just" testers though. They just play the game all day.

Though I still think Destiny lacks some soul and doesn't seem to have an unique style

I have two friends working on Destiny as environment artists. They seem very positive about the game and are very tough critics.

If you guys have any questions I might be able to answer them or ask them for answers.

At first, I wasn't even interested in Destiny when they announced it. Hardly a multiplayer dude anymore.
But after watching some videos, the fact that I can be playing singplayer (or coop with a friend or two) and then as we're wandering around the map start some big multiplayer event on the fly has me interested. If that stuff works well enough, I'm definitely interested.

I have total faith this game will have what it takes to sell well and be something you will play through more than once.

Hopefully, they take all the time they need to optimize this.
Please.
I don't what to be frustrated as I was with *cough* BF4...

Idk, the fact that BF4, such a major AAA title, is so screwed up makes me worried.

Sort of insane how ambitious this project is, I really hope they can pull it off.

Seems like a lot of bloat.. even with monster sales it's likely to make little profit.
Just curious but what is the ambition here the people are referring to?

In terms of budget and manpower it is impressive. But gameplay-wise I don't have a handle on what makes this title truly ambitious. I see this term used a lot with Destiny - what am I missing?

Infamous:SS team is less than 100 (80 if IIRC) and it's a decently sized open world game. I realize you said Sony, but it's a shitton of teams so it's not one amorphous block.
That's my point. They're the only ones who seem to properly manage these things. They get them out quicker (usually) with significantly smaller teams and budgets, and they're usually the most technically accomplished console games around. They also tend to push more creative franchises. Nintendo goes without saying: unrivalled polished, always with that Nintendo feel, and there's no way Nintendo is running these crazy team sizes.

From what I can tell, imagine the Spore space stage mixed with Borderlands mixed with Halo.

Nintendo and Sony normally make games for a single platform.

Wow this game better sell well. Talk about an ambitious project.

Been in development for almost 4.5 years, if not more. They've been wanting to do this since 2009 and actively started working on in 2010 for sure. Plus, Joe Staten left as well, he was the writer/design director and had been with them for a long, long time.

I just wish they would tell us, or show us more. At this point, not really hyped for the game much at all and I'm a huge Bungie fan.

Things must be going down the shitter when people are worried for a great dev team just because a game they're working on is a new IP.

AC4 was 1000 as well. This gen it's all about content creation, now that we have the GB's. The top studios will want to be in control of hundreds of bodies or they'll fall behind.

I get the Borderlands aspect (co-op, loot, though not a gazillion guns) and the Halo bits (Bungie combat design and artists), but not the Spore space bit as the starships in Destiny aren't player controlled, not in the sense of actually flying them around.

The game looks pretty good, don't get me wrong, but I feel like I'm missing whatever others are seeing in terms of size or scope or ambition. Are people expecting a shitton of content with the first game? Over the course of several games? Maybe there are some core features I missed? All I know is co-op and public events and talk of competitive arenas.

Honestly just curious and not just trying to indirectly minimize the game's impact.

This game is a lot bigger than they let on in what has been released so far...
So, rumblings about things nobody can talk about yet?

I honestly expect this game to be pure shit. I hope I'm wrong but unless it does some groundbreaking things it's not going to live up to all of the hype. These days new ip's don't fare too well. I'm sure they'll reference "from the creators of Halo" in the sales pitch.
