Best Buy has new shipments of PS4 in their stores (1/19/2014)! #thirstisreal

Cant wait of get a Sony PlayStation®4 entertainment system.

The PS4™ is pretty great guys.Hmm I would like a Hostess™ Fruit Pie while I played the PS4™.

This is a myth--there's no evidence that a significant number of people act this way. People will wait for what they want; not many consumers (especially after the holidays) will "settle" for a more expensive piece of equipment that isn't what they want.
I agree with this. Especially now that little Mikey isn't pining to play the new COD on Christmas morning, and there really isn't any high profile multiplatform new releases out there right now. Why pay more for something you don't really want if there's nothing compelling out there to force your hand?

I like the Fogstation Four. Diggnation was one generation too early with the Nintendo 64 comparison.

To a point but there's a tradeoff involved. Markets like India, Phillipines etc aren't huge markets for a top end next generation console. Most of the target market there is wealthy enough to just import it from Dubai or Singapore or the nearest convenient gray market. They shouldn't have even bothered with Brazil till they could find a way to assemble PS4s locally to get the RRP down. I think it would make little difference to their brand whether the PS4 was there or not.

I don't think Sony realized US demand would be THIS high. I think they were expecting sellouts through this point, I don't think they expected lines at this point. They probably would have been better off launching later in some of those areas, but by the time they realized it, it was really too late.

This is getting ridiculous. How can a console launched two months ago still have lines? Either Sony screwed up and really underestimated demand (it should have been obvious it was going to be high by E3) or they launched in too many countries and spread themselves too thin. They had better start making sure there are adequate supplies in the main western markets for March or people might just get an Xbox One for the big multiplatform releases given you can pretty much walk into a store and buy one.

I do think it's in Sony's best interests NOT to have Wii like scarcity for a year+. People will get tired of waiting and buy XB1s. They need to get the supply situation sorted relatively soon.

If those people truly wanted a Xbox One console, they would've picked one up by now. They did have plenty of Xbox One's in stores & on online, after all.

What front-loading?

You mean when Infamous, Drive Club, Metal Gear, Thief, possibly Watch Dogs, Dying Light, Wolfenstein, Final Fantasy XIV, The Show, and more start coming out?

It's not a huge line-up for the spring/summer, but it should keep the ball rolling quite nicely, IMO.

We will see. We have seen unprecedented sales for both consoles and most of those at this point have probably been the more hardcore fanbase jumping in right away as they can.

You have to ask yourself what the top end of early demand is for the PS4 before the sales slow up. 6 mil? 10 mil? We'll know when we get there, but I am expecting lower than typical 360/ps3 sales (during their prime) over the spring/summer months.

And outside of Final Fantasy, there is nothing up there that screams major console seller. And even then, it's not like Final Fantasy has been at the top for awhile either.

I hope things calm down soon, my family want three of them around march. I wish I lived in New Zealand where they can't get rid of the buggers.

They have sold every single system in the U.S, like you can't go anywhere and get a ps4. As soon as they arrive they get sold out. I'm trying to get one since I missed launch and it's ridiculous.

They sold 850k last month in a month when they were 100% sold out. Is there really a significant marginal return to selling another 50k (putting them right at where MS was) vs. selling in other markets where, I dunno, maybe due to FX they make slightly more money?

I could see if Sony decided to ship like 200k to every market, but they're really shipping a million units a month to the US. It's not so bad. The #thirst is just real.

I think you underestimate how many people have bought this console or are waiting to buy this console for InFamous SS. Not to mention Watch Dogs will do amazing on the PS4. I can easily see a Watch Dogs bundle.

It's kind of funny how, despite not having any appreciable practical difference, the tone of all these conversations would be very different if Sony had just supplied an extra 50 thousand units or so to the US :p

The consoles do not sell the best in their first year.

I'm very happy for sony, but not as amazing as the wii launch. I could have sworn they were selling out for over a year straight.

Well yeah the Wii had that gimmicky waggle controller that everyone thought would be good. My family bought a Wii as well, it was collecting dust within a few months when we upgraded to a 1080p TV, as was the vast majority of my friends'. We still bust it out for drunken Smash Bros sessions on occasion but everyone fights over the GameCube controllers.

For Sony to have a console without any odd, catchy new gimmicks and it still be carrying this amount of demand is pretty damned impressive I'd say.

That's because there hasn't been a true mega next gen system seller multiplat yet. The big ones have all been cross gen with fairly decent last gen versions. I'm fairly confident in thinking that the next wave of mutiplats will run very poorly on the PS3/360 and buying a next gen console to play something like Watch Dogs becomes a lot more important. There will come a point where people will just say fuck it and pick up a Xbox One because they don't have to wait to play a game they really want to because there are no PS4s to be had.

Had a line by 7, sold out all but 2 of our 20ish systems we had on hand. Our store also has another 36 in transit, hopefully a sign re-supplies will be more frequent

I think it would have been better for Sony to have waited to launch in some of these other areas until they had more of a handle on the US/EU markets. Of course, at the time they decided all these launch dates, they did not realize how bad the #thirst was. Undershipping a region is one thing, but saying the launch is delayed due to demand in other regions is another.

I can confirm as well. The Northern MA and NH district had around 500 this morning. Lines at most of the stores for opening, and they're pretty much completely gone by noon. Crazy stuff

I don't think the drought is going to last that long for your scenario to be applicable. But time will only tell!

Everyone's perception of value is different. Right now I don't see a single game on PS4 that I would want that I couldn't get on PC. So from my perspective waiting in line would be pointless.

I can understand being upset that the console is not shipped yet but asking him get in touch with his local ETA branch is a bit too drastic.

he should use the money he's saved from not getting a PS4 to open an IRA

Well, what do you expect to happen realistically? Already PS4 is at 4.2 million sales. I would say max cap for 1st year LTD is 20 million (including the 4.2 Nov-Dec.), and that is still an amazing number.

You expect it to sell like 28-30 mil by next December? It is completely unrealistic.

The Wii sold, what, 20 mil in first year? And I don't believe the PS4 is a Wii-like phenomenon.

At some point, the sales are probably going to slow to a crawl for a number of months before picking up steam again.

Again, it is all speculation.

And yet if consumers really cared that PS360 versions were inferior versions of multiplatform games, then why would they accept the inferior versions of multiplatform games on XBO? I mean, if that was a real likelihood, you think they'll settle to pay $100 more for a system that frequently can't hit the same resolutions or framerate as PS4 in multiplatform titles?

Consumers know what they want. They're more patient than we are.

Woah, nice, and from a vetted information source too.

The thirst is real.

Considering February will have stock shifted to Japan launch and March has plenty of games, if Watchdogs releases April with a bundle, potential TLoU/GTA summer ports, E3 Hype, 1886 in August, Destiny in September, AC in oct, CoD/BF in Nov and Xmas in december.

It really is possible for PS4's to be tough to find for the rest of the year, especially if they start redistributing stock to mainland EU once US/UK sales begin to taper a little.

Sony really dropped the ball on the price of this thing. It could've been 50 or 100 bucks more and it will still have sold out.

I guess the were really humbled by 600 USD and didn't want to go near that price.
Honestly, I kind-of wish it was $50-100 more expensive so that they could put some beefier specs in there. Sony probably could get away with it seeing how well these consoles are selling, although they'd still be giving up a big advantage over the Xbox One.

This doesn't make much sense. Call of Duty, Fifa and BF4 are making people wait for PS4's to be in stock but Watch Dogs won't? Because it might run worse on current gen consoles? You think consumers who are buying PS4's are refreshing digital foundry constantly to see the differences between current gen and next gen? Consumers don't care what multiplat runs better or worse against current gen consoles. Both consoles are already setting records. They want to upgrade and one console is $100 cheaper than the other

Sony had a $500 console before. And it was a disaster despite dominating the previous generation. They were smart to be price conscious.

That $50-100 would have just meant the PS camera would have been a packed in standard, and not likely specs as Sony stated they played around with the pricing schemes with it included.

I got at bestbuy an hour early and there was about 2 more people until like 10 minutes before they opened. I would say there were about 7-10 people waiting in total.

Yup. Upping the system to 8GB GDDR5 was already them doing the most they ever were going to do with the specs. The next step, if the price was increased, was to include the camera. In my estimation, that's us dodging a bullet :P
