Exclusive Invitation for an Xbox One Alpha Trial [Titanfall]

Well, yes, but it's the kind of information that a dozen games in you don't want anymore -- a timer will suffice instead, no?

At least for the constant Titan updates.

The hardpoint notifications were unnecessary too, because of the visual information already on screen. Worst case scenario is you turn down dialogue volume in options, so meh, no biggie.

We're talking strictly about this alpha here.

Ok, so how can we say it would make performance fall? We don't know if the build was initially done with full textures then they uploaded the alpha with 1/4 textures so people were getting in quicker? It's all moot anyways since the alpha ends tonight.

It won't preform worse, but it'll be more intensive of course. It's engineered to run at 60fps for whatever 100% resolution is...

More intensive = means more framerate drops, right? I call that worse performance.

and what did you mean by "It's engineered to run at 60fps for whatever 100% resolution is"?

I'm not sure how big this Alpha is, in terms of how many people got in. But I've had no issue with lags, or games taking too long to start. I'm able to get into matches very quickly 99% of the time. So in that sense, it's been great.

Well that's how games work. You increase texture resolution, you have less framerates. If you're PC player I'm sure you'll know that.

Well yea obviously. My thing is, I've only had a couple framedrops while playing through 45 games. It only happened in the most extreme case with all 12 Titans fighting in the same area on Fracture, and even then it only lasted for a moment.

I mean not necessarily...
More intensive does not mean it's over intensive.

There are games where you just don't see framerate drops. It's not because they dropped the texture quality at the last minute, but because the art assets, along with everything else, are balanced during development to maintain a certain framerate.

I know you haven't been experiencing the same dips as me. But can you honestly say this runs 60 FPS silky smooth? Even when there isn't dips, I don't think this game feels as good as Battlefield 4 or Killzone Shadowfall. Do you?

Hell, I even think Call of Duty Ghosts on PS4 runs smoother (after they patched out the issue with the game going over 60 fps). I'm not too worried, because I think the final build will be better optimized, and I really do not think we will be having these issues in the final build. But I kind of question whether the final build will be a locked 60 fps. I mean, I'm assuming it will be given the rumor its going to be 720p.

Finally watched some alpha footage this morning. Impressed how similar actual gameplay is to the official trailers. Had assumed Battlefield Moments levels of choreography going on, but the guy I watched was surviving consistently and pulling off all kinds of crazy shit. Sense of scale from inside a building, with titans crashing around just outside the window, is amazing. Hype levels now through the damn roof.

It really is that cool. The parkour stuff is very fluid, and becomes second hand nature to you fairly quickly. It adds a lot to combat, as combat isn't always certain. In most other fps, if someone gets the jump on you, you are pretty much dead. But this game gives you more options to slip through their fingers, and even turn the battle in your favor.

Texture resolutions has very little impact on framerate unless you run out of memory. Then things start to hitch.

I sit about 7 feet away from a 52 inch LED TV. I don't think that would really matter. What data center are you playing on? I'm on the central data server with anywhere from a 30ms to 65ms ping depending on time of day.

It displayed the data center information to you in game?

It doesn't feel locked at 60 fps but I've only had a couple severe drops.

When you are in the main menu before jumping into a lobby it tells you in the bottom right and gives you an option to change which one you're connected to.

Saw a recording of a full match. Definitely brought the hype down for me. I am not a fan of the COD gunplay and the Titans are basically stuck between buildings so that infantry can take them down easily.

The parkour with the jetpack feels great though, I'll give them that.

What I'm trying to say is this alpha is performing like this, because they used 25% textures. With 100% textures it will have more framerate drops.

Anyway I'll stop talking in this subject, because it doesn't add anything and Titanfall should be more than ready in march.

It's just that map that takes place in a city. But one boost and you're practically down the street and around a corner.

I'd suggest you watch a match on the other map in the Alpha, it's much more open.

It doesn't work like that. With 25% textures maybe it just takes 60% processing power instead of 70% (obviously made up numbers). Doesn't necessarily mean there would be more framerate drops at all.

Did you see the map Fracture? I rarely get stuck between buildings so pilots can take me down. I guess on Angel City which is a closed off city, I see your point. Less area to move as a Titan. I will say though, I've rarely died as a Titan by someone on the ground. I mostly die from the Titan I'm facing head on.

That doesn't really change the points you're making though.

Fps is pretty damn solid. Drops can be as much as network as anything else... Remember performance is impacted in mp play - no matter the game. However, 60fps is king.

More than any other factor, the maps could make or break this game for me

I trust Respawn to make solid gameplay, but they're designing maps now for titans and infantry, and if done wrong, both will suffer

Also if either aspect of the combat is simply more fun, certain maps are going to be a lot more or a lot less enjoyable

Curious to see the final map count and inevitable pocket hungry dlc plans

Yeah and I'm on US West since I'm on the West Coast. Average MS is 23 which seems lower than the servers you were on. Plus my ping is always low and my connection bars full.

But even fps dips aside, this doesn't feel smooth to me the way Killzone SF or Battlefield 4 does. Has anyone confirmed the Alpha is even 60? It's definitely not locked. Although I know Killzones isn't always either, and is variable.

EDIT: I tried to change Data centers, but it says:

West US (22 Ping)
Central US (75 Ping)
East US (76 Ping).

So I've been on West US this entire time. *shrugs*

I love how positive you are that higher textures = lower frames. That's rarely how PC games work when people have gfx cards with enough VRAM. Please stop propagating bad information (especially when someone else in this thread already told you what I just wrote what I just wrote).

Look at the difference a couple months made for Dead Rising 3. I'm not worried about the framerate. If they need to, Microsoft will just throw a ton of engineers at the problem to help get it fixed in time.

that's one of the maps. In any case, the game is so enjoyable and intense I couldnt complain about that map.

Dead Rising 3's fps wasn't anywhere as bad as some made them out to be (I mean post launch). I know even post launch, some complained about it. And yeah, there are dips. But I remember some saying they had 10fps frequently. I thought DR3 was more than fine for the kind of game it is.

goddamn, I knew they moneyhatted games, they got pocket moneyhat engineers too?

Plus optimisation is the very last thing to occur in the development process. The alpha is old code. (Goes without saying)

Dammit man, I said there I'll stop talking about this subject, don't tempt me :P

I hardly notice the shitty texture in the alpha but everytime I jump into a titan the interior looks playstation two atrocious

Looks like COD with some mechs. There doesn't appear to be any destructibility to the environments either. If I'm in a giant mech I should be knocking down telephone poles.

That said it does look a bit fun when you're in the titan.

Judging from the videos i have seen the texture work is UGLY. Seeing as it is an Alpha and its source engine its obviously going to look a lot better for launch.

PC and Xbox One should have parity, but who knows at this point. The footage i have seen have all had pretty bad draw distance.

What difference? DR3's framerate is still atrocious! Not sure that was the best example to choose :p

I know it's been said multiple times but it's worth repeating to avoid misinformation -- the current textures are at 25% the resolution they will have in the retail game.

I can't believe people are picking apart the graphics in an ALPHA test, lol

None of this was intended for public consumption. You can call that foolish or naive in this connected age, and you'd have a point, but the fact is this is nowhere close to final, optimized, shipped product.

They're looking to address major bugs, not show off the product for the mass audience. That will happen in due time.

HUD looks terrible. Just as cluttered and messy as the maps.

I actually agree with this, they need to clean it up.

Same problem with Need for Speed Rivals, I don't need half of that information, and certainly don't need it flashing in the middle of my damn view.

At least give me the option to turn if off. I'm quite happy to wait till the end of a match to learn how many points I earned or levels I reached.

Which half? The minimap, the status of your Hardpoint capture, the amount of ammo you have left, the amount of time until your Titan is ready, time left in the round, the cooldown of your special abilities, or who's winning?

It all seems kind of important to me. The Point ticker in the bottom middle disappears almost instantly, and it's not like you're going to be leveling up every 30 seconds.

That's because the textures in the alpha are at 25% of what they will be for launch.

Beaten, but yeah - that needs to be said to avoid any misinformation going around. This was really supposed to be under an NDA for a reason but people don't like to follow them.

Not gonna front. Even though I may not like the game entirely because of personal taste, it looks pretty fun. I know I would suck because the jumping mechanics would mess me up a lot and running out getting killed by a titan Lol. To add to that, have you guys seen the way your body gets tore up when you get shot by a titan? The video I watched, the dudes body was gone. But it looks like a fun game for those who like it or is in that type genre.

I'm not sure about the newest KZ, but against BF4 this thing feels way faster/smoother to me. I feel like I'm playing on mouse and keyboard at times it's running so smooth. But I'm running on the US West Server. I'm in So. Cal. I'm getting really buzzed right now watching the Seahawks vs 49ers... and after that it's time to Titan..... Fall! :0

I mean I agree Dead Rising 3s fps isn't technically great, but I didn't find it atrocious in the sense that it was constantly bad or making things slow to a crawl. I wouldn't find it acceptable for games outside of the launch window, but it was playable.

But for an fps multiplayer, I expect silky smooth 60fps and for it to be constant. Once I've gone Battlefield 4 and Killzone SF, I can't go back. It's why I'm being picky about the fps in this alpha. But again it is the Alpha.
