Resident Evil 4 Ultimate HD Edition PC

Pre-ordered, i hope i don't regret this.
I loved/hated Resident Evil 4, i just hope its a decent port.

AGAAARRENLO!!!
No dejeis que se escape.
DETRAS DE TI IMBECIL!!
Miralo, esta herido!
UN FORASTEROOOOOO!!
MALDITA SEA, MIERDA!!

And the regenerators, and pretty much anything that's supposed to look wet and slimy, which is a large majority of the bosses and some enemy types. Other versions without it simply look flat and bland. I'll probably end up getting this, but I'm very disappointed that it's not in the game.

To add on to the regenerators, even their finger/toenails were shiny. Not to mention the lighting also enhanced the look of the weapons and collectibles (pretty much anything you view the model of in the inventory menu) Man, the attention to detail on the GC version of RE 4 was just phenomenal. (I hope this version is more shader-mod friendly)

This actually makes me more optimistic about it, RE's one of their biggest franchises and if they're doing this for RE4 then they'll probably quietly axe it in RE5. They're just stupid and didn't say anything for some reason.

Or they're going to ignore it and release Gold without GFWL. If that's the case I'd have to hope it's offered for free to everyone who owned the game, similar to Minerva's Den for Bioshock 2 or Divinity II: Developer's Cut for those that had Dragon Knight Saga. Though I'd expect Capcom to want to get money out of it instead.

I didn't realize Gold Edition never made it to PC. I could see them suddenly announcing that later in the year.

The textures in those screenshots and trailer still look like the same shitty quality ones so how is this version the Ultimate HD version then?

So, Capcom confirmed the "Archives" you get for the pre-order/$20 down before release is an artbook. Not the BradyGames artbook/guide/story-collection hybrid book they released back in the day digitally.

I'm... slightly disappointed. While the artbook (which is taking the Bio4 section from that guide/book) is a nice bonus, I kinda wanted that for the sake of collection. :(

DId they ever explained who this guy is? Is he a Plaga carrier as well?

This is pretty exciting, even though I've bought this numerous times previously. DMC HD collection next, please?

Dragon's Dogma next.

DMC3/4 are already available and DMC1 is easy to emulate.

We don't have access to Dragons Dogma even via emulation, and the performance on consoles is a travesty.

In summary:

Like the PS3, 360, PS2 and PC versions, it appears to lack a couple of effects from the GCN and Wii versions -- namely, the blur filter (DOF) and specular highlights (which make certain monsters look "slimy").

This version appears to have the cleanest image quality, however. Dolphin can achieve similar results, but this is the cleanest you can get "officially."

There was some debate here about whether the lighting has been changed. It appears the lighting changes are not in-game, but rather the work of Capcom editing screenshots after they were taken. This would explain inconsistencies in the PC screens. Also, the lighting in the Steam trailer looks fine. In other words, the lighting has probably not been changed.

The biggest boon for the PC version is the 60 frames per second -- it will run twice as smoothly, really *popping* off the screen. The controls will also be much more responsive at 60 fps. It should be the best-looking in motion, and the best-playing.

In terms of content, it has everything -- Separate Ways, the cutscene viewer, the special weapons and costumes, etc.

Not bad for $20. Still one of the greatest games ever!

Great summary.

I just put in for the OT for this one. Can't wait for the end of February and renewed RE4 discussion.

this better support 144fps. not supporting 60+fps for any pc game in 2014 isnt acceptable.

I would give this one a pass in exchange for real-time cut scenes.

The calculations have obviously been tied to frame rate. Getting 60 is a miracle in its own way, unlocking further would probably create errors.

Thank you. I was looking for this kind of response. I own RE4 on GC, PC and Wii. I remember the PC version using movies (mpeg?) for the cutscenes. I also remember that Text-mod the tool used to make the PC version look super awesome also caused the game to crash a lot due to memory leaks. Not sure if this was ever resolved I gave up on modding the game. I think I might drop the $20 for this version.

RE4 is also easy to emulate, we are still getting that. I want an official DMC HD release along with Dragon's Dogma.

Nope, they're pulled from Steam.

Which means... D:

If the lighting is that garish throughout the whole game, the missing effects will be the least of the issues. But assuming the port comes from the 360/PS3 base, I don't understand how the lighting would be that different.

Reminds me of the original RE4 PC release, lighting was all messed up. I don't understand why with the success this game has had, they just don't pony up and give this one the REmake treatment on next gen and PC, just build it from the ground up again to push more modern hardware. It would sell a ton.

Wait, specular highlights is that shiny effect on enemies and such yes? Why is it not available in this version? This would make bosses look boring.

A developer came in earlier and said some of the effects from the GCN version, such as the specular highlights, were done using proprietary hardware within the GCN.

That is why you see those effects in the versions compatible with that hardware but not in the PS3/360 or Steam versions.

They would be an impossibility to create those effects again as they were, you can only try to recreate them.

It'd be cool to see some modders try and recreate the specular highlights. It wouldn't be 100% the same, but I imagine a good mod could come up with something close.

1100 posts and no "I'll buy it at a low price!" quote? pffftt

I haven't played RE4 since the original PS2 release.

Think I should just start my first play through on Hard? Or go through normally?

I'm sure the difficulty can be unlocked through a config file from the start.

It's just normal and pro, so If you haven't played in that many years, I'd play normal. It's not like it's a cakewalk by any means.

Btw, what will you call the OT?

I've never actually played RE4 (yeah, I know, I'm missing out), so I went ahead and pre-ordered. $20 isn't that expensive, and since I never actually owned the game, I don't have to feel bad about double/triple/quadruple dipping.

I think they've upscaled the base textures, even where they haven't redrawn them at higher resolutions (or had higher res versions of the original texture on hand). compare the ground texture here...
Seems like they added crappy sharpening to them as well.
So missing fx and reduced quality textures, might have to wait for the next release.

Exciting news! I've only played it on the PS2, so from the beginning my version was somewhat crippled (if I remember correctly, anyway). I would love to go through it again definitive-style. Hopefully this shapes up to be definitively definitive.
