Super "NeoGAF Arcade Stick Thread" II TURBO

I got this stick today.

I got excited for a bit because i thought the shop made a mistake and sent me the VF Dash version...

that hype died when i opened it up it was just the 3 Button version inside. haha.
oh well, that's what i originally ordered anyway.

I aim to collect all VF related sticks. if you wanna help out and do some trades (i have TE's and HRAP's) hit me up.

Ohhh I'd love some impressions hibachi. How does this compare to the PS2 stick?

posted this on tumblr too, but here:

i've never encountered this before, HORI actually "gave a shit" back then. haha. its exactly similar to Sanwa JLF switches. and as pictured, they went out of the usual way and put it in a pcb assembly. the joystick inside has the same base measurements as a JLF, shaft height and all are very similar (i put a sanwa shaftcover, works w/o modding/cutting). after cleaning and re-lubing it feels smooth. it is mounted a bit higher compared to their recent "Fighting Stick" line of joysticks for some reason, but its closer to actual Astro City panel shaft height.

Buttons are a bit better too (after cleaning), comparable to PS-15's/OBSF. as for the stick's shell, i feel that it has more heft than the ps2 VF4Evo sticks, it obviously uses a thicker metal top panel. I feel like getting another one and mod it for multi console. :D

I tried to look online and seems like the VF4 (like yours) has the same buttons, and possibly the same joystick mech (its differnt shaped to what hori used later on), if you dont mind dismantling it and taking a look, would be cool. the VF4Evo sticks are kinda like EX2's to be honest, buttons felt cheap and stiff, at least on what i have.

my only issue, is like the namco stick the top panel might be prone to paint cracking and rusting.

forgot to post this. Got it in Dec from our own good chum hibachifinal! Six button setup with RGs, exactly how I was going to mod one if I ever got it on my own, so it saved me all that trouble. Thanks again, dawg. It's real pretty. Haven't gotten around to trying it with the Rollie Flash but that'll come around sometime.

Seeing pictures of SEGA controllers like that makes you wonder just what happened to SEGA.
I understand the American branch ran the company into the ground in the US -- I witnessed that as a gamer and owner of their last two systems(!) -- but did the Japanese home company really get that overextended?

From all accounts, they still produced some quality hardware even into the early PS3 era but there's been not a peep of any new gaming hardware from SEGA in years. Instead, we get Sonic retreads and rumors of a new Aliens game...

Yeah, about that Aliens game. Talked to this with a gamestore manager -- he's around my age -- and we're not holding our breaths on that one. The last licensed SEGA Aliens game wasn't that great. The awfulness of that game is still being discussed 10 years later!

One SEGA characteristic about game controller releases is that it seems SEGA is VERY stingy about the numbers of pads and joysticks it's produced for even the ultra-popular Sony systems. They didn't make too many PS2 Saturn pads and I don't think the VHSG and PS2 Virtua Sticks ever officially left Japan, either.

I'm surprised they never did a re-release of the VHSG or a redesign of that controller for the PS3 and 360 after the obvious successes of Mad Catz and Hori in sales post-Spring 2009...

Got my TE2 the other week - but I have my wife holding it for me for my birthday on the 1st :)

Anyone got any links to some galleries of TE2 custom art? I'd like to get some printed in advance :) (I already have the templates from the Madcatz site)

Aw man, Sega. That's WONDERFUL. It's so sad, Sega Japan made such great hardware... and that's the part of their business that they decided to cease. Did that prototype allow for installation of the Astro / Blast City plates? They look about right, but it seems possibly a little wider?

Yes.

I sure hope that wherever those prototypes are, someone's using them. Eeesh.

speaking of micomsoft.

their stuff has some of the best typographical elements i've seen on an arcade style joystick (and general gaming equipment) imo.

but yeah that hori sfc stick is quite the tank i'd imagine

So true. I dare say that I liked the packaging for the XRGB mini more than the actual unit design.

Arcade Stick-GAF, I ask for your assistance.

A friend of mine has been reluctant to get into fighting games, even though I'm pretty sure he'd fall in love with them if he gave them a chance. The other day, he said that he'd consider getting AE on PC to play with me if he could find a stick for $40.

I've been looking on his behalf for a halfway-decent stick at that price range, and as you can imagine it has been a nigh-impossible quest. I don't want to recommend him something that's a complete POS because then it will just be a waste of time, but then again anything with Sanwa is gonna be at least double that price used.

If anyone comes across any deals in the $40-60 range for a decent 360/PC stick, could you please let me know? I'll keep looking around on my end as well.

I noticed that the SEGA A-stick balltop handles seems suspiciously large.
(Second reflection, I'm thinking it's just an optical illusion.)

Are those 38mm or bigger size?

Maybe the people testing the prototypes just have small hands...

I looked at the HRAP 2 SA picture above and unless that's customized, that's a 35mm handle. I know because I own an HRAP 2 SA! Profile of the ball handle on the HRAP 2 SA is identical to the A-stick. Sometimes even good photography can be misleading on sizes and color... The angle of the photos might just be distorting sizing a bit.

********************************************

I noticed that sometimes the bigger handle comes in handy. I've found that in at least my case it seems to be easier to do rolling movements (ie, hurricane kicks) with a 38mm handle versus the 35mm standard. It's easier to "palm" the ball handle and do a smooth rotation. The slightly larger-sized handle hasn't affected dash moves or diagonal movies (dragon punches) once I got used to it.

I noticed that amazon USA now sells the Hori N3-SA on their site as an official release for $130 (as opposed to arcadeshock's import price).

I already noticed an improvement in switching to a bat top. It allows me be more precise when I'm doing certain things and it's easier on the hand. :) Now I just want a silent version of the stick. I hope Hori or somebody comes out with it soon if not already.
Silent buttons do make a huge difference to me. Even on the normals buttons I don't press down on it very hard and it's very clicky and annoying.

Yeah, I saw that too. Hori's best-looking stick right now, IMO. I like how it looks even more than the Fighting Edge.

There is a little mini sanwa version that came out on japan last year...very difficult to find now, though. Was kinda hoping they would release it here as well.

And going to put this art:

Didn't love the all white. I prefer a bit of contrast in my color schemes.

/googles

That's the SC5/DoA5 stick, right? I like that one too. That's a great price on Amazon.

Speaking of, the DoA5 version had a slightly different button layout than the SC5 version of the stick. Is there a .psd template for art somewhere out there for the DoA5 version?

Art Hong has templates for all the plexi's that he sells on his website...

Here's the link to the page that has all the plexi's listed --
http://www.tek-innovations.com/arthobbies/index.cfm?loc=about&sub=templates

(There are additional plexis Art Hong no longer displays on his website but you can ask and receive the weblinks to those particular products. For example, he no longer lists the Tekken 5 and Agetec/Dreamcast plexis but still accepts orders if you ask and get the links from him.)

Look for the heading that says Hori Dead or Alive... that's the HRAP N3 VARIANT that has the different spacing for the buttons. It looks to me that the joystick and buttons are closer together on the DOA 5 joystick but it's hard to say for 100% unless you have the joystick in front of you. I think Hori ended up producing fewer DOA 5 joysticks than the SC V version...

The Soul Calibur V and HRAP N3 SA are effectively the same joystick.
Hori wasn't calling the SC V joystick an HRAP at the time it was released.
The only differences between the SC V and HRAP N3 SA that I could detect were a) obvious part color and art differences and b) the HRAP N3 SA edition has the rubber non-slip mat that's become standard to current product arcade joysticks.

Oh, and the SC V was actually cheaper than the HRAP N3 SA. Hori has raised its HRAP starting prices to $139.99 now... At one point in time, you could buy an SC V joystick for $99 with free shipping direct from Hori USA. MSRP was $129.99 for the SC V.

Damn, it's $140 now. I know it's only $10 increase but that's harder to swallow, especially for a last-gen controller. I'll keep my eye on it for a price drop.

Yeah, I have both the SC5 and DoA5 sticks. Newegg was clearing out the DoA5 sticks at one point for 40 bucks, so I grabbed on. It is definitely a different layout. I'll checkout the tek site later. :)

They didn't have it last time I looked, but that was several months ago.

DOA5 stick is great and fun to own because of the astro city layout (compared to NOIR on the N3-SA, TT2, SCV sticks)

that said though, i keep coming back to this... sucks that AX S+G didn't come out.

Shaft cover is not present might be throwing you off.

Alright Stick GAF I need some help:

I'm putting together a large art installation for my thesis show at the end of this semester and I am in need of arcade sticks, but a large number of them here is what I need

- A stick with 2 to 4 buttons (unless it is advised to just get a 6+ button stick and to take out the buttons)
- PC compatible (as long as it sends button and direction signals it should be good
- Preferably under $75
- Dosn't have to be best quality but I don't want straight up shitty

I have to probably order six to eight of them since I'll be putting at least three stations of gaming for people to play. I also am looking at maybe just making the sticks with a few arduino units since I'll be able to make them even more customized if needed, it'll just take longer to setup.

On a side note, I am also considering building a few arcade cabinets since I have access to a CNC Mill that I can upload the cut to a computer and have it automatically cut out of wood. Any layouts available?

Thanks ahead of time and any help is good help :)

I have this. My favorite stick :)

I've seen plexiglass cases for around $55, but would you really want a plexiglass case? Foehammer has some great looking, wooden, DIY cases, but they're $110.

http://www.foehammershop.com/

If you want something cheaper, you'll probably have to request one from someone who makes them.

Someone used to sell blank wooden ones on ebay for around $50. Unfortunately i never added him to my watch list so i cant contact him.

Just got a "Mad Catz Fightstick Pro" today, pretty cheap.

Having trouble getting used to a stick after typically using a keyboard, but I want something I can swap between the PS and PC

The main issue i'm having at the moment is I used to use the numpad 456 to punch, and 789 to kick, so i'm having trouble adjusting to punching being on the top row, along with general stick movement

Only real complaint is that I'm not too keen on the art, and the usb cable is incredibly long (Tournament use I guess? I'd like to mod the art at some point, but in no rush to do so

I'm someone who dosnt build sticks so I come at this uneducated:

are there button covers for holes you don't use that can easily be installed?

yeah just plug them in from the top

Try uncoiling just the length of USB cable you need, then closing the cable storage door.

Yep! http://www.focusattack.com/sanwa-obsm-30mm-button-cap-hole-plug-black/ (plenty other colors too, just make sure you buy 30mm covers)

You just plug them in and you're good to go

e: dementia beat me but ya, there you go :)

Sweet thanks guys.

I still need input on a stick to get based on the criteria I posted. I need to get at least one soon so I can map the buttons properly to what feels best for what I'm coding currently.

The price seems really nice, but reading the reviews it seems like some buttons are crap (if not all).

The stock BrawlStick buttons should be fine. Most of the problematic MadCatz clone buttons went out with the original SF4 line; the BrawlStick came out much later. At the prices you can get BrawlSticks at Amazon right now, you're not going to find any better bang for your buck. Besides, if you're only using two or three buttons, you could simply keep the buttons you remove as spares, the hardest part of swapping them out is operating the screwdriver.

To work on PC should I be getting PS3 or 360 version or does it not matter?

The stock stick, however, isn't the greatest. I had a lot of problems hitting diagonals using it. u/f and u/b in particular didn't seem to register like they should have. Luckily, swapping sticks is also really easy if you find it bothers you.

Yeah the WWE stick is fine if it's just an event for casuals for something. They aren't great for long term use but they'll be okay for what you need. If you were gonna use these long term I'd recommend a stick replacement for sure and a button replacement eventually.

If you get it and after testing want to replace the joystick itself it's only about $25 and very easy to swap it out.

I don't think it matters (BrawlStick should also solve the compatibility problem with some USB chipsets that affected the SF4 line), but the PS3 version seems to be the one readily available; the 360 version is probably harder to find for more money than you're probably willing to pay.
