Cronos from God of War III is one of the best levels of the past generation

There are times in action games where the bosses are huge freaks for the sake of it, and fighting them is just not as fun as fighting the regular sized enemies. When I saw Cronos in GOW III, I was interested to see what Santa Monica had in mind for a battle against such a gigantic creature. They delivered in all fronts. Not only it's one of the most incredible looking scenes in a video-game yet, but it's also a fantastic level overall. That's what I like the most about it: it's not a generic boss fight against a massive enemy (which they could have done); it's a level that takes place on the creature. It was so well thought out, because fighting Cronos in a regular fight wouldn't have made any sense. Instead, they used the titan's flesh as a level where they showcased what makes the franchise shine: fantastic set-pieces, great battles, disgustingly gory moments, and visual spectacle. I think GOW III peaked at that moment.

Cronos is one of my favorite levels of the past gen. What does GAF think about it?

Nah, that bit with the hand shadow ruined it.
Poseidon level was the best, and the one they had a dedicated team working 6 months on alone, so not surprising,

Poseidon fight is a marvel to look and hear, but the actual fight against the "sea horses" is kinda tedious.

All I remember of it is that I killed some random grunts on a platform. I pressed circle on something. Kratos jumped somewhere. Then I was on another platform with another bunch of random grunts to kill. Then I pressed circle on another thing. Kratos jumped again. I repeated that 2 or 3 times, I think.

I might be remembering it wrong (it was five years ago) but my interest in the game was diminishing fast by that point. By the end of the fight I had totally checked out of the game had finished it just to finish it.

GOW 3 an art of video games. GOW A is just a bad game that i found my self forced to play it because i am a fan of GOW.

i finished GOW 3 like 3 times while i barely finished GOW A.

i am not sure what went wrong. different producer etc. but please.. bring the GOW 3 team back for GOW 4

You don't remember pulling Crono's fingernail? O.O

The sense of scale was incredible. Personally though my favorite boss from that game was Hercules. It was so Brutal and really felt intense.

Edit: Was anyone let down by the final boss fight? It felt a bit underwhelming after the epicness that was Poseidon, Hades, Cronos, Hercules, etc.

I seem to be an outlier but I personally didn't like it. Cronos was made into a MASSIVE idiot to have the fight play out like it does, it wasn't satisfying for me due to that. Stuff like kratos stabbing his hand with the blade of olympus--he looks right at you as he raises the other hand yet says "Where did you go?!?". completely took me out of the moment. They also could have atleast make it seem more like a fight, stuff like his hand hitting into his arm so you rip off his fingernail would've been better as an actual attack, I was literally trying to get hit by it on my second play and I just don't think it's possible, it hits just outside the area Kratos is in. Despite it being basically an ant conquering a massive obstacle, all I felt like I did was fight super sized mental retard.

Looking fucking AMAZING though.

Played the game again on hard
Fuck that Zeus Fight
late last year and it was still stunning looking. They blew their load with the intro though lol

I might have just dismissed that as yet another "mash circle a bunch" quick time event. The spectacle of it was nice, but that spectacle didn't have any meaningful impact on me or what I was doing. The platforms full of grunts on Cronos' hand were no different than any other platform full of grunts in the rest of the game. The mash-a-button QTEs were no different than any other mash-a-button QTE in the rest of the game.

Other than it visually looking amazing, I'm not sure what was so great about the cronos level.
Hades on the other hand...

People often mistake spectacle for genuine level design quality.

Chronos is one of the most memorable moments in gaming but I would of got the same experience out of it if the PlayStation controller was in some else's hand.

yup. that game sucked. if you are a fan you're pretty much forced to play GOW: A :(

It looks incredible, but let's be honest, gameplay-wise it was incredibly simple. Going off of memory here, but it was basically an arena fight on his forearm, some QTEs, some climbing, another arena fight, more climbing, some QTEs, some hanging, another arena fight, more climbing, and then QTEs, QTEs, QTEs.

Replace "forearm" with "memorable Greek setpiece" and you have all of God of War in a nutshell.

Also, GOW3 peaked at the Poseidon/Leviathan battle. That's no knock against the rest of the game -- it's a testament to the incredible spectacle of the first 15-20 minutes of the game. The Hades and Hercules fights were also super-solid -- and much more interesting, mechanically -- but in terms of sheer theatrics, Poseidon/Leviathan takes the cake, followed by Cronos. The Leviathan's design, in particular, is just inspired, blending rushing water and bits of chitin in the shape of a horse-drawn chariot. Probably one of my favorite creature designs in games.

Actually that's what I liked about it. As the OP said, fighting huge bosses can be a bore, but Chronos was actually more of a LEVEL than a boss. And it used most of the the games mechanics... Fighting grunts while Chronos is trying to smash you. Climbing vertically, climbing on the ceiling, jumping from finger to finger to get close enough to his eye to then blind him with a flash from Helios' head. And then later on his shoulder you fought bigger enemies and utilized the beast riding mechanic. If you think of it from a level design perspective rather than a boss fight perspective it is quite impressive.

i dont think anything has topped the scale of gow titles yet. what other game lets you fight enemies that large.

But I was critiquing it as a level. It's very simple from a level design standpoint, notable only for the theatrics that surround it.

Luckily, those theatrics never get old. I'll boot up GOW3 every now and then to replay this and the first 15-20 minutes with Poseidon/Leviathan.

I loved God of War III. Awakening... I can't decide if it was terrible, or I was just so tired of the GoW formula at that point. I think the bigger issue was that by that point, they'd already used up all the parts of Greek mythology people might actually give a shit about in previous games.

I have a save just before Cronos and... yeah of course, Aphrodite. The rest of the game is a snoozefest and waste of potential, especially the other bosses (yes I'm putting Hades in here, what a boring fight). Bless joo, Poseidon.

still tho, my 2nd favorite GoW game.

Sorry to quote you twice in a row haha
I agree with most of this, only I'd say Chronos was at least equal to it, but perhaps didn't quite make the impression because you had already been through that epic beginning. I completely agree on Hades and Hercules though. They are my two favorite bosses in the series and two of my favorite bosses of all time. My biggest disappointment in Ascension was bossfights because they took a step back from III. Level design was stronger in Ascension though I though.

The opening chapter of GOW 3 blew my mind when I first saw it. The combat was fun and you can really feel the sense of scale.

Now if only Sony Santa Monica just announce a new GoW for PS4...

It's very technically impressive, but as far as GoW 3 goes, Hades' boss fight was the best part.

Agree.

The club level in DmC was probably the single best level I played in a game last gen, that or Tower of Latria from Demon's Souls.

But you like the opening due to the spectacle... You even admitted that the Hades and Hercules fights are much more interesting mechanically :p

Loved the hell out of that level in God of War 3, and just love everything about that game overall. But my personal pick from last gen would be a mission in Halo 3 called simply "The Covenant".

First off, it starts in the clouds with a group of Pelicans flying in formation before dropping you off on a forest beach, spartan laser in hand, to tackle a few squads of Covenant infantry and an AA gun emplacement.

That's already a cool and classic Halo setup, but its just the very beginning.

Once you clear the AA guns you get an airdrop of Warthogs you can use to fight your way up a mountain pass, tackling defensive turrets, light infantry, Ghosts and finally a pair of Wraith tanks and some Brute choppers when the path finally levels out.

This leads you to the first of the two control towers to assault. Inside the first forerunner structure you fight your way through Brutes, Grunts and Jackals until you reach the elevator to the control switch. That switch is guarded by a Brute Chieftain and a full Brute pack and makes for a harrowing mini-boss battle.

You're not done yet though. Once you've defeated the Brutes and flip the switch, you head back outside and work your way to the beach - and there find waiting Hornets (single pilot aircraft that two players can hand on the outside of) and take your fight to the skies. The level opens up into a sprawling battle between ground forces of infantry, turrets , AA guns, tanks, fuel rod equipped enemies, Banshees and Covenant dropships, all spread out and guarding the second forerunner tower.

After this battle you're still not fucking done. You've still got to clear out a landing spot, tackle the outer tower defenses and make your way into the facility proper. This time those halls are guarded by Grunts, Brutes and worst of all, Hunters. And even then once your reach the elevator you'll have a second Brute Chieftain and Brute Pack to deal with before you can flip the second switch.

And no, you're still not done.

At this point you make your way back outside and find Warthogs and a UNSC Scorpion tank. You'll need it as you push your way forward through a high and winding mountain road, littered with enemy vehicles, sniper perches and makeshift defenses. At the end of this long road of destruction are more Hornets and weapons parked at the ready. And that's when things get really interesting.

TWO huge Scarabs drop from the sky and dominate the valley below. Your job is to take both of these behemoths down by any means at your disposal. They're packing enough weaponry as is, but they're fully manned and crewed with Brutes and Jackals and Grunts and leaders, and helped out by skirmishing ghosts in the snow below.

Even after you watch the second Scarab go up in an explosive fireball, you're still not fucking done yet. You make your way into the main Forerunner structure which consists of a long series of hallways ending with a control room - the room where the Prophet of Truth is preparing to fire off the Halo rings. This long hallway is guarded by fuel rod Grunts and everything the Covenant can throw at you. Once you fight your way through, you have a final encounter with Truth and only then can you finally take a breath and relax a bit -- BUT NO - This is when the fucking Flood attacks from every angle, reanimating those fresh enemy corpses into combat forms.

The hallway is now littered with dozens of flood combat forms lunging and firing and stabbing and moaning and exploding. Only when you fight your way through the hallways again and defeat that entire horde do you at last reach the snowy valley again and complete the mission.

The level has always astonished me in terms of scale and scope and ambition, but its also crazy replayable and a very different experience each time. Play it with friends, play it with skulls, play it solo on legendary difficulty, play it on foot, play it with hogs filled to the brim with NPCs armed with heavy weapons, play it while trying to keep that brute chopper as long as you can. Whatever. Its epic, its insane, its sweeping and gargantuan and at times hard as nails, but it also shows off everything that makes Halo great.

It might also be one of the best shooter levels ever made. Its my personal favorite anyway.

The level was really quite the feast for the eyes. I just wish there was a bit more depth to the actual battle itself.

God that last boss fight had to b the 1 of the worst boss fights of any series. Whst ironic was this series has the best boss fights of any series, but every Zeus fight sucks.

If im not mistaken Cronos was an idiot. In Greek mythology gaia tricked him into eating stones when he was tryin to eat his children

I actually prefer the Alecto fight at the end of GoW: Ascension. It had all the spectacle and scale of Cronos but was actually a fight and a challenge. Such an underrated game - I struggle to understand the negative reactions it got. Forget the past generation - that sequence was more impressive than anything on the next gen boxes. Maybe the beginning of Chapter 4 in Killzone SF comes close.
