Starbound Beta Thread - Begins December 4th!

Been waiting for the wipe to start playing, but gave in and started anyway. So far an hour in it's been interesting. Died a couple of times but liking it. Looking forward to the patch to start for real on a more permanent character.

The first rule in Minecraft is not to mine straight down, because you don't know what is underneath you.

Now, since you can see a little bit underneath the ground in this game, I was under the impression that I was safe from this rule. That is, until I discovered that gravel and fine sand obey the laws of physics. And also generate in unstable patterns like in Minecraft.

One misplaced pickaxe swing and three screen lengths of darkness later, I found myself in a bit of a cave-in.

Fortunately I had enough dirt to place platforms to get myself up.

So the first rule in Starbound is not to dig straight down in gravel.

So the first rule in Starbound is not to dig straight down in gravel.

My first rule is if I see gravel dig straight down and then around the base so I can get a ton of ores as the ores in the gravel get shook free when the gravel goes so it's a great way to get a bunch of coal and iron with a crummy pick axe early :P

I like the sound of that whatever it is.

OH SHIT. And...
I'm guessing that first change may just be related to serializing data.

I liked the "hurr const correctness" change. A programmer after my own heart. "My OCD is going to make me fix the const correctness, but I'll still grumble about it."

That's not some patchnotes, that's obviously a SVN/Git log. And BTW if any programmer in my team used such "descriptive" revision changes, they'd be getting an earful from me. I'm not even kidding. I suddenly appreciate that all my work mates write descriptive change logs.

Even that aside, was this leaked? I would NEVER make a repository log public as-is. :S

So I just bought this game. I'm..... Interested. And I'm a HUGE Minecraft lover, so I think this'll fit.

Is there any beginner advice? I have no idea what I'm doing.

EDIT: ooooh I found the Wiki. This'll be awesome. Any other advice?

my major advice right now....
hold off on getting attached to what you are doing for a few days, as you are going to lose all your progress real soon :P

was one of the lucky to get it from the humblebundle, looking forward to playing it when the next patch hits with the (hopefully last) character wipe :)

I haven't followed the beta news much, but have they said anything about implementing a Terraria style multiplayer set up, where the client portforwards your router itself?

What do you mean portforwards the router?

If you portforward one port everyone can play on your local server, already.

I dont recall Terraria ever actually doing that, and I ran the GAF server for that game. I forwarded the ports myself. In both Terraria, and for Starbound.

The 1.2 update had the game use UPnP to automatically portforward when hosting.
I mean I can get it to port forward myself, but it can be a hassle some times.

I havent played in a few weeks but was going to get back into it, there is a wipe coming soon though correct? No point in playing now if there is a wipe in the next day or 2.

I think there may literally be a wipe in the next couple of days yes, but it's hopefully the final wipe.

Weather types are planet dependent, so if you want you can build on a different planet that doesn't get meteors.

Or build a meteor shield/bubble thingy of really strong material.
I thought I had read in this thread that the material type basically doesn't matter to protect against meteors. Is that not true?

Also, how long do you have to stay on a planet before you can determine that it does not have meteors of any sort?

Maybe the patch will change it so all planets randomly get meteors. :P

Fucking METEOR STORMS. I can't build shit...

When you start on a meteor shower planet the best thing to do is rush to build a furnace and make yourself a bunch of coal to fuel your ship and leave. It's very hard to enjoy/survive meteor planets without having access to higher tech.

I tried to tough out my first planet by building lots of thin wall barriers (since it would only destroy a small AOE) above my houses but I had to keep rebuilding over and over. Much more enjoyable to leave that planet in your rearview.

Most materials break in meteor impacts, but the stronger materials can limit the damage. All planets only have 1 weather pattern right now. So if you see any weather thats not a meteor shower, then you're good.

I want this game so bad, but I really don't play PC games. Even though this game is perfect for PC, I still want to play it on my PS4..

Cool, thanks. I guess I'll watch for rain when the patch hits. :P

For some reason I cant login to the GAF server

I took the server down because:

a) Universe got corrupted, so everything was wiped in regards to the server.

b) Since the upcoming update is going to wipe everything anyway, there was no point in me putting the server back up after the corruption, because we're just gonna lose everything soon anyway.
Server will go back up once the patch hits.

That's not from a dev. Though it wouldn't surprise me if it turned out to be true.
