Microsoft Studios acquires rights to Gears of War franchise/Black Tusk does the work

As much as I still love Gears well 1-3 anyways not a big fan of Judgement, Im not sure what the point is now Delta squad is no more. Although it would be nifty to have more background on the pendulum wars. However time will tell just hope it goes right.

I have a 360, with no plans to get an Xbox One, so it would have been nice if any series continuation also appeared on PlayStation, but that's all out the window. Fare thee well, Gears of War.

Who is Black Tusk anyway? Never heard of them. Are they new or just a rebrand?

MS's biggest problem is that they're more interested in big franchises then they are the talent behind those franchises. Bungie is what made Halo great and Epic is what made Gears great. They have the IP's but don't have the original studios that made these franchises what they are.

It'd be like Sony buying ND's IP and farming them out to other devs. The talent at ND is the real prize.

This is a good post. The companies behind the IP's made them what they are, separating the name from the genius behind it rarely works out great.

Look at 343 taking the Halo IP, it's a shell of it's former self according to tons of fans.

Its more likely that they paid out the ass for this deal.

Not saying it wasn't still expensive, just saying it was probably far less expensive than it would have been in GoW's heyday.

Remember, along with Halo, it used to be one of the biggest reasons to own an Xbox. Really can't say that these days.

*Insert comment about MS being more committed to new Ips by journalist*

Lets see how this turns out, the last time someone besides Epic made a Gears it was totally forgettable. And that wasn't a new studio

Guessing this is what's killing gaf? Sounds like what happened with Halo to be honest. Although I have hopes for Black tusk as they sound competent

Do you just like to pay attention to only some of their output or what? There's more than just Halo/Gears/Forza just like there's more to Sony than just KZ/UC/GT. No one is arguing that MS puts out more new IP than Sony, but let's not act as if MS doesn't put out anything but the titles I listed.

I would since they're in the same genre. ND made it clear that the original Gears was their main gameplay inspiration for the original UC. I never talked about the development studio behind them, so I'm not sure where this shit you're coming up with is keying off of.

Well mind telling me what those games are? We know of 3 or so games that aren't Halo/Gears and Forza (those being Sunset, Quantum, and D4). That's it? If so that's exactly the issue. Compare that to PS4's lineup of Uncharted, inFamous, The Order, MLB, Driveclub, Rime, Helldivers, Shadow of the Beast, Rapture, Yakuza, Lily Bergamo, Deep Down as well as a lot if PCPS4 games
like FFXIV, PS2, Everquest and more (that's just off the top of my head). And to top it off that's without us knowing what a good amount of Sony's studios are even doing. It just doesn't compare

Gears and Uncharted were in development around the same time, all they share is a cover system which isn't even exactly the same on both

So strange that Black Tusk is getting "stuck" on this. so now their most talented teams are each assigned a franchise they must continue to make games under. That doesn't sound very exciting.

Eh, not exactly the most exciting news, unless of course they take Gears in a new, more exciting direction. Gears kind of never felt the same to me after the first title.

I'll say this much, though, I'm incredibly surprised by this. I was almost 100% certain that this game would end up as a multi-platform game or even a possible PS4 exclusive... just a strong belief that I had. Anyway, of all the things I was looking forward to this gen, a new gears wasn't exactly one of them, so I hope Black Tusk can surprise me. I also seriously hope that this doesn't prevent Black Tusk from making new IPs.

I don't agree with that at all.

I do (MP wise, campaign was solid), but I don't agree that it was entirely 343's fault. The downturn began with Halo Reach, and 343 just continued towards the direction that Bungie was headed to starting with Reach MP.

Long time Halo fan here:

I disagree whole heartily with this comment.

First of all, to a lot of fans, Halo started to become a former self of itself with Halo Reach. Hell, 343i actually made a patch for Reach that basically improved the whole game.

343i also took a lot of risk and tried out different things in Halo 4. Not only that, but in quite a few places they surpassed Bungie IMO.

Depending on Halo 5, we'll see what happens to the franchise. They have experience as a team now, they have plenty of feedback on Halo 4, and now we'll see if this franchise can reach new heights or not.

Can't say I'm super excited after GOWJ but still cool news that the franchise isn't dead. Not sure where they will go with it now though.

Hope there is news of other stuff today.

This is actually a good point. It will be interesting to see how this game turns out and how epics new (eventual) IP turns out in comparison.

Why are people writing Black Tusk off? Let them release a game first and judge them on that. It sucks that the concept they showed at E# is getting shelved, but if they can make Gears great again, I won't mind. I will say Phil Spencer kinda contradicts his earlier statements that Gears will be given a long break.

Microsoft throwing money around again for more exclusives. It doesn't surprise me.

Gears of War has definitely overstayed its welcome with me. Played the first one a lot, beat the second one, played the third one just a bit and played one game of Judgement online, I believe. Its been in steady decline in my eyes for awhile.

It wasn't entirely their fault. I actually enjoyed MP more than any other entry, but I am probably in the minority.

Gears game based on the Locust universe would be amazing.

That, Xbox Slim, no kinect might do me in for an Xbox One.

Halo 5 will make or break the Halo franchise. It will tell us all we need to know about 343 at the helm.

Gears is over for me, the story satisfactorily concluded with 3. More prequels or Gears in Space made by another studio doesn't sound very compelling.

What if Epic sold the ip to Microsoft and now are making their next game exclusive for Sony? Weren't there rumors of Epic making a game for PS4 at one point last year? Feel bad for Black Tusk creatively. They are gonna be stuck on this franchise forever now. MS won't let them make anything else.

Gotta give MS props- they're building a nice stable if AAA exclusives. For people like me
With both consoles this is the kind of stuff you wanna see.

For people like me without "both" consoles, this is the kind of stuff you don't wanna see.

But it doesn't really matter in this case. Gears is an IP that got destroyed by its own fanbase and still doesn't know whether it's a horror-filled tactical TPS or an action-filled bro shooter. Plus, there are no real leads for a story continuation because of how Epic previously handled the franchise; a locust-free Gears or a Gears without familiar characters are very real possibilities.

I doubt this will play out well, especially given that the Xbox One is not currently what the 360 was back in the day. But, who knows... I confess that I can't predict game quality from a studio I know nothing about, and that's a matter of primary importance.

As a Final Fantasy fan I also have to add that one (perceived) bad entry in a franchise doesn't mean that there will never be a comeback.

Well we did see those tech demos of UE4 on PS4 in Feb, the question is if Sony is willing to dump loads of cash for an unproven 2nd party IP.

This isn't moneyhatting. It's basically the same as Sony buying the IP rights to Demon's Souls even though they only published the game in Japan.

MS is also using their 1st party studio to continue the franchise.

Hopefully Black Tusk have the talent to pull off a Gears game, because Epic and Cliffy B. pretty much made that series what it was, and we've seen how farming out development of a franchise has worked out in the past (see Arkham Origins to compare how a new studio handled a AAA series)

I don't think people are really WRITING Black Tusk off as much as these two factors:

*The AAA new IP from Black Tusk was canceled/halted/etc.

*People are tired of Gears. The Locust Trilogy ended perfectly, and Judgement was... it was bad. I've been playing Gears since Day One, and I love the franchise, but if you want people to be excited you need to GIVE them a reason to be excited.

Personally, I'm somewhat excited to see where a fresh developer can take Gears.

Hopefully we get a new art style as well.

I think this could indicate several things:
1) MS' 1st party rejuvenation effort aren't going that well and the new IPs didn't look as possible blockbuster AAAs.
2) MS is scared of Sony's advance and quickly needs a sales boost by launching proven blockbusters. Since Epic doesn't want to do new GeoW, they bought them out so they could do it themselves.
3) MS doesn't feel that Halo alone could provide the required sales momentum in the future and are trying to replicate 360's GeoW/Halo cycle.

Either way, I think this is a reactionary strategy and that MS is playing catch up.

I see people got high hopes for Black Tusk or are they just getting along with the hype?

There are some good games coming to the bone but people drinking the kool-aid over this is funny to me. Microsoft doesn't have the same track record of letting a studio do it's thing when under their umbrella. They let Bungie slip once fatigue on Halo set in and closed studios instead of giving them a chance to prove themselves.

The Fable team working on a new ip seems to be them contradicting this but if this gears does do well anyone thinking BT will be anything but a gears house can just take a seat. If it doesn't they either have to get the team in order due to their investment in the up or that studio is joining the graveyard with Ensamble.

Seems like their falling into their comfort zone to early instead of making new experiences for the gamer. My main problem is they made themselves the home of the shooter last gen so they may get stuck in the hole where anything that isn't that won't sell since the cod/madden/battlefield crowd don't really venture to far from their comfort zone.
