Microsoft Studios acquires rights to Gears of War franchise/Black Tusk does the work

Not saying it wasn't still expensive, just saying it was probably far less expensive than it would have been in GoW's heyday.

Remember, along with Halo, it used to be one of the biggest reasons to own an Xbox. Really can't say that these days.

On the other hand, video game IPs rarely change hands in this manner. Certainly not ones of this magnitude. Yes Judgment was a downturn for the series, but it was still a billion dollar franchise last gen. Considering Epic has no reason to sell the series, and the position that MS is currently in, I'd be shocked if they didn't get completely hosed on this deal.

Past sales don't mean much.

What if MS would buy the Guitar Hero franchise?

Only four games were even released in order to hit that number and Gears of War: Judgment wasn't a mainline title. It's a side-story. Comparing this franchise to Guitar Hero is ridiculous.

Eh, not exactly the most exciting news, unless of course they take Gears in a new, more exciting direction. Gears kind of never felt the same to me after the first title.

I'll say this much, though, I'm incredibly surprised by this. I was almost 100% certain that this game would end up as a multi-platform game or even a possible PS4 exclusive... just a strong belief that I had. Anyway, of all the things I was looking forward to this gen, a new gears wasn't exactly one of them, so I hope Black Tusk can surprise me.

While I'm not happy about this, Gears going multi-plat or PS4 exclusive would have been very bad for MS and the Xbox One. I'm thinking FF XIII level of reaction from the gaming community. No way they were going to let that happen. The question is when this deal with epic took place?

I was hoping they would work on one of those 4 new IP's they had in the pipeline according to this. It must not have been too long ago that microsoft decided to assign gears to them. Maybe they're working on one of their other IP's at the same time as gears (anyone know number of employees at BT?)

The E3 teaser looked interesting. I think the studio should've been allowed to develop something from the ground up to get their creative juices flowing, establish themselves and show what they're capable of but I guess microsoft wanted the less risky option even after the had 4 other projects in production apparently.

A gory, cel-shaded Gears would be legit IMO.

So Black Tusk is the new 343i, a developer created at great expense for the specific task of churning out new games in a safe (some might say stale) franchise.

Might be exciting for Gears fans but it sucks for everyone else.

So Halo one year and Gears the next? Like others have said colour me disappointed. Looking forward to how they milk it to irrelevance though.

This, Phil is totally ignoring questions about new IP.

If they think they can get away with Halo, Gears, Fable and Forza again this gen they can go fuck themselves.

And no buying exclusives doesn't count, because we all know 4 years in they'll give up on that.

Well, my lack of excitement for Gears is at least consistent, but I notice some drastically altered opinions from only just a few weeks ago. It's amazing how quickly people can sour on a franchise they seemingly wanted to so badly appear on the PS4 the very moment they find out the door has been shut on that possibility. Plus, I think Uncharted is a better franchise.

To everybody voicing concerns about new IP. I share some of the down attitude finding out that they aren't working on something new, but why specifically does the new IP need to come from this developer? Aren't there other solid, more proven developers already working on new IP for the system? Quantum Break is still one of the most exciting and interesting new IP, and who knows how Sunset Overdirve could turn out. Could be pretty exciting.

I am not a huge fan of the series, but I am still hopeful that a new team with new hardware can make it fresh again. It's a clean slate as far as I'm concerned. I hope Microsoft will let them go in bold and take some risks.

Just like no one cares about GoW after Ascension, right?
Are you being sarcastic? Yes Acension hurt the God of War brand. Yes Judgement hurt the Gears of War brand. No one cares is a hyperbolic statement but but they certainly lessened the fan base or their fervour for another game. What is there to argue here?

Good news for fans of the franchise, there will be more Gears of War games. Microsoft acquiring makes sense, the IP means the most to them out of anyone and Epic has different priorities as a business these days. Not sure it's happening for the right reasons (we have a great idea for a new Gears arc! vs. Epic be damned, we need more Gears games!), but the blueprint is there, I'm sure it'll turn out fine.

Personally it's hard to feel much of anything about this news. The annual cycle of Forza, Halo, Gears, Fable and Kinect Thing from Microsoft got staler and less appealing as the previous generation wore on for me, and knowing that so many resources are being put into keeping the status quo going for the foreseeable future feels like missed opportunities. Even if they are good games, they're iterations of good games I've been playing for years (and in the case of Gears, have been done with for years). The safe bet is rarely the exciting one.

Yes, I don't see how its big news to buy something after it has seemingly run its course. But count me in with the "Gears needs a break, for its own sake" club.

MS bought something though. Thats nice.

Well apparently they aren't too far into development, so I'm guessing it'll get its break. I still find it funny you're sticking with the "it's not big news" thing. Obviously it is based on the reactions all over the internet.

This can be good news if done correctly, however im not so sure Black tusk can take a franchise that was struggling at the end of its tenure with Epic, due to creativity.

I would have though an Epic games with a re-surge on the creative side would have been the better option but I suppose they are burned out on the franchise.

So that leads to the thought, what have EPIC games got up their sleeves now and should Microsoft have let this game die, if not under EPIC? Or are Black tusk up to the task of proper creative vision it needs? I assume it will still use unreal engine.

"Getting hosed" all depends on the prospects of the franchise moving forward. If Microsoft had paid a truckload of money for the GoW IP after GoW2 released, they definitely would have gotten "hosed." GoW3 did fine, but Judgment has been seen as at least a relative failure, one that certainly puts the future of the franchise in some amount of doubt. As such, Microsoft has to have purchased the IP at less than peak value. What they now do with it will determine whether that was a wise decision or not.

Long time Halo fan here:

I disagree whole heartily with this comment.

First of all, to a lot of fans, Halo started to become a former self of itself with Halo Reach. Hell, 343i actually made a patch for Reach that basically improved the whole game.

343i also took a lot of risk and tried out different things in Halo 4. Not only that, but in quite a few places they surpassed Bungie IMO.

Depending on Halo 5, we'll see what happens to the franchise. They have experience as a team now, they have plenty of feedback on Halo 4, and now we'll see if this franchise can reach new heights or not.

Another long time Halo fan here (Hell, try starting at Marathon 1, Myth, Pathways of Darkness, etc.).

I disagree completely. Halo has gone down the shitter with 343, both MP and SP and the number of MP show it. I don't have much faith in them.

Gears of War 1 was the game that got me to buy a 360, maybe history will repeat with the Xbone but we'll see.

That's my hope. Rather disappointed that they didn't get to try starting a new IP
