What are your *Actual* hot takes regarding video games? I mean ACTUAL stuff that would get people riled up?

Square Enix have the biggest cojones in the entire gaming industry, bar none.

They had the easiest lay-up of all-time.

All they had to do was take their time and faithfully re-create one of the most beloved games in history, package it into a single, coherent 40-60 hour game, and the Final Fantasy 7 Remake would have been a money-printing machine for them. Creatively bankrupt like EVERY other remake and remaster in the industry right now, but a money-making machine nonetheless.

Instead, upper management decide this is an 'ideal' opportunity to take a very serious reputational and financial risk on their biggest single-player property, by getting shifty with the core narrative of the original game, turning a single 40-80+ hour title into a likely 100-200+ hour trilogy, and making it a re-quel/se-quel/pre-quel/whatever you want to call it in the process. When they advertised it as a Remake, 99% of people likely didn't expect what they got.

Many will categorize the decision to split the game up into a trilogy as a cynical cash-grab, but the slam dunk cash-grab would have been a faithful remake as I'm sure that would have generated more revenue right?

Many people will and still do call it an incredibly stupid business and gaming decision, incredibly disrespectful to the original game etc, but you can't deny that Square Enix have taken the decision to do something completely different from every other remake in the industry, and actually offer something more creative than a visual/graphical upgrade with an extra 5% bolted on.

Personally, I think it's crazy and they've potentially lost out on hundreds of million in revenue after spending hundreds of millions to develop and market the games, but I at least applaud them for trying something different. Even if most don't agree with it.

You only rack the slide because deep down you know I'm right.

It was definitely the transition point from a Star Trek inspired hard sci-fi title with heavy role playing elements to Star Wars Great Value dudebro shooter. It's like putting character levels in Assassin's Creed. You can't really put equipment and levels in Tetris and call it an RPG. Even the promotions, you'd never know there was a class system at all.

ME3 on when you had missions where you COULDN'T HOLSTER YOUR WEAPON.

But at least you could customize your weapons instead of playing a stupid, boring minigame to "upgrade" them along a linear path with no choices.

They make really cool games... but the stories and characters aren't memorable at all. The ones who do a good job are Capcom, Konami, Nintendo, Japan Studio, Square enix... The rest don't.

Rockstar makes awful games. GTA V and RDR2 have awful gameplay and only high production values.

GTA VI will likely be a shallow experience as well.
I agree but want to make one caveat:

GTA IV is the best game in the series and was their last with good gameplay.

Everything you did felt meaty and impactful, interacting with the physics systems was fun. It also (by and large) don't suffer from the 'chore' feel of RDR2.

Sure it had its annoyances (every GTA game does) but I will Stan that GTA IV was/is a great game.

Steam is hands down the best platform to play games, no contest.

That said, I think Valve is run by a small group of hippies in flip-flops who shower once a month, work when the vibe is right, and spend more time scratching their balls than fixing bugs or releasing games. Anytime something amazing comes out of Valve, I just assume it comes from an external office or some poor underpaid contractor somewhere in the world.

Still the best company out there, somehow.

Arc raiders is just a trendy streamer type game that everyone flocks to like sheep thinking it's much better than it is. It's literally just ok, the skins are trash, the guns are basic, extraction is a shit genre 💪

I believe most pc gamers are not actually fans of video games, they are only fans of cranking up graphics settings to the max.
A game can be the worst game ever, but to a pc gamer it wouldn't matter as long as it supports ray tracing with every setting at ultra running over 120fps.
The actual quality of a game is less important then how well it benchmarks, and if it justifies the cost of their hardware, so that they can feel elite.

I think consoles handware sales are going to massively decline this year and I can see the stars aligning for it.

1. Heavy AI investment causes RAM to skyrocket causes PS5 and potentially Switch 2 to increase prices.
2. Xbox is pretty much dead and PS5 declined by 40 percent while on a sale in November while S2 declined by 10 percent. Combine with price increases and I think decline is going to skyrocket this year.
3. Given AI upscaling new games on previous hardware, I don't think they'll recover to original levels.

I've read somewhere that Sony managed to secure a large batch of components used to manufacture RAM before the big drama and technically they should be okay for a while. Xbox wasn't prepared and that's why they're screwed even after the recent massive Xbox price increases. Who knows what's going on at Nintendo, are they prepared and how big is their profit margin per console. On the other hand Sony may smell blood when everyone raises their prices and do the same, even if technically they could maintain them on a similar level.

In my opinion someone will eventually step in to cover the needs of the consumer market. If that collapses along with videogames as the biggest branch of the entertainment industry then the economy will also take a big hit and everyone loses.

The obsession with 'hot' characters is the lamest cope in gaming

People act like every protagonist needs to be a 10/10 supermodel or bust, but that's just shallow escapism for folks who can't handle anything less than idealized fantasy

Silent Hill 2 Remake's Angela or Bloodborne's beasts get praised for using "ugly" to hammer trauma/home themes, but god forbid your bounty hunter waifu skips the thigh-highs

The hypocrisy is off the charts: you'll rage over a female lead's jawline or scars ruining your immersion, but happily watch hours of a bald, unkempt dude in a messy room ranting about how "ugly" characters kill games. If attractiveness is truly the make-or-break factor for your enjoyment, why is the king of reaction content someone who openly gets called out for his own appearance? Yes. I'm talking about Asmonshite.

Gerth666 seems to have nailed it. I have some PC Master Race friends, and that describes them pretty well. They also do the whole "stop having fun!" Thing while we play low ass resolution Switch 1 games.

TOTK was garbage and Nintendo has been struggling in terms of first party output quality for at least 2-3 years, despite a few hints of greatness like Donkey Kong.

But look at the first 9 months of the switch and switch 2.
The switch has a new revolutionary Zelda while the switch 2 has Zelda patches. The switch has the best Mario Kart ever while the switch 2 has the disappointing Mario Kart works. The switch has a new IP in ARMS which was really nice and polished, the switch 2 has crippled-basketball. The switch 1 had xenoblade 2, the switch 2 has a decent but disappointing Metroid Prime. Etc etc.

Third party on switch 2 are much better though, but Nintendo kinda sucks on their own machine.

I prefer Nintendo when they struggle. And by the way, I only have a switch 2, because I'm a busy adult who needs to play on the go more often than not, so I'm really rooting for Nintendo to succeed.

E33 is the most overrated game ever, it has a basic battle system, terrible exploration, dumb story and the only good thing about it is the voice acting.

This game being so beloved baffles me beyond belief.

E33 ripped off so much from Lost Odyssey.

Yet LO remained far superior in most aspects, specially the combat system, characters and story.

FFV is too much menu and too little actual playing. I know people keep saying it's on of their favorite FFs, and I get it, back when the OG released having all these chstomizations must've felt awesome, but for todays standards it combines a lot of things I hate about RPGs.

100% agree

It is reinterpretation of LO mixed with FFX and FF8 + some stuff from Mario RPG even (the whole timing shit)

Me and my buddy ran through Black Ops 7 together. It was the most hilarious shit and a great experience. Borderlands got nothing on this with their cringe "humour". And the gunplay was solid enough as well.

Mind you we were laughing at the game, not with it, but the point still stands.

Great game for dumb fun. We plan to replay it.

The amount of effort you took to create this 3/10 "meme" says otherwise lol. You gotta agree there's a sprinkle of truth in what G gerth666 stated.
Just a tiny sprinkle, I think. There's certainly a loud, small contingent of PC gamers who are guilty of exactly what the original post claimed, but in reality PC is also the platform of indie, retro, MMOs, friendslop of the month, all kinds of shit that has nothing to do with pumping graphics. Look at Steam's most played games list. Not too many lookers on there. And average hardware based on Steam survey is not that great either. The kind of PC gamer that was being described is over-represented on the internet, but not that common in reality.

Pc gaming is just abysmal these days. Been building pcs since what they used to call in the 90s "computer shows", where you'd go and buy parts etc... Living the evolution of pc gaming has been amazing, upgrading every few years to top tier machines was priceless. Fast forward to today and I bought a 4090 when it dropped and it's an incredible card but I gotta admit that with how devs aren't even optimizing pc games as good as they used to or at least not at launch, and with how something like ps5 pro has closed the gap a good bit, I've just enjoyed it alot more lately.

The beauty of building pcs was the fact you could crush consoles like demolish them at a fairly good price, all the quality pc only games, it was a different world back in the 90s, 2000s to 2010s for pc gaming.

With pricing now I just say fuck off, as I get older I'm more content with turning on my pro and going, just is what it is.

Hermen Hulsts deserves as much general backlash as Phil Spencer, in the way he has handled the First Party Studios of Sony (WWS) so far, since he took a Leading Position at the Company.

I think Street Fighter 6 sucks, and i'm angry people don't see that because they say Civlization 7 sucks and to me SF6 sucks more than Civ 7.
It reminds me more of Mortal Kombat than a Street Fighter game.
Really pisses me off.

1. Idiots who buy a $700 dedicated gaming console to only buy sportsball crap and COD (aka normies and casuals) are a cancer to the industry and are complete retards.
2. Single player games should never have player nerfs nor should beneficial glitches (infinite money, broken abilities, infinite damage loops) be patched out.
3. Difficult does not equal good, nor are Soulslikes the end all be all for video games.

All anime looking games are so gay and retarded, male characters behave like little whiny bitches, and the stories are for teens that keep their panties in a bunch.

Nintendo create some of the most uninspired game characters and stories that its painful to watch, their games are for children and big pansies, their shit is expensive for the shit they produce.

There is one gaffer here that complains about every game and every little new info about anything, his views are always negative, he probably brings everyone around him down. Because this cunt loves to bitch about everything.

Microsoft sucks and as a game company it sucks even harder, They bought terrible studios that are mid and not talented enough and spent almost 100 billion dollars at that.
