The Game Business - Nintendo Switch 2 sales stumble over Christmas

I've been spoiled by the Switch 1 OLED. Anything worse in terms of a display and/or battery life is unacceptable for me.
Yeah, these are the major hardware downsides and you just know we will have a revision to correct it in couple of years. And by then we will have "hopefully" 3D Mario and 3D Zelda or Monolith RPG hit.

mario wonder really was a dud sales wise compared to mario on switch 1.

Mario Wonder is good for what it is, and it made Nintendo a lot of money, but everyone knows it's the off-brand shit.

You want people that are on the fence to buy your product and Nintendo offered NOTHING for the holidays.

I was excited for Switch 2 because it's powerful enough to actually look good docked, and it looks great on an oled and everything. But there's no "magic" here. It's been disappointing.

Other than Mario Kart, the switch 2 didn't have any big new games that would drive common people to buy it, so the initial wave is already dwindling down. By this time the Switch 1 had Zelda BoTW, Mario Odyssey and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. A january direct with some big games + the Mario Galaxy Movie could help them greatly.

Occam's Razor: It's a $500 handheld. That's an enthusiast price. I don't care if "everything is expensive". The original Switch launched at $299.

Nintendo already burned through the hardcore console fans. The handheld crowd is still happily playing their Switch until the price comes down in 10 years.

Uh yeah looks at the news. I'm making the bold prediction that people buying less toys as they get ass-robbed by billionaires with their fingers in government is going to be a trend. I'll further go out on the limb here and say it will get a whole lot worse than weak christmas shopping.

I asked this in another thread and no one could answer me. If I have a Switch 1, a PS5 and a PC, why do I need a Switch 2?
I have a switch and ps5. so i really don't need switch 2.
Maybe you need the switch 2, since you have a pc and a ps5 for some reason.

I don't even think it's the price. Credit cards are massive still.

It's the quality of software, the keycards and it just being a marginally better (for casuals?) hardware.

Personally, the software has been massively unappealing for me, and the lack of clear updates or answers, even from partner publishers for Switch 1 to Switch 2 performance updates has made wanting to buy one frustrating. Are you telling me you big internal dev STILL haven't had performance updates for Xenoblade X. Really?

Let's hope they release 2 or 3 big hitters (mario, zelda) this year otherwise they won't be hitting the numbers they are expecting. Everyone will want GTA for Xmas and that's their holiday 2026/27 sales down by a massive margin.

They have played it too safe with switch 2 so far, not sure it's going to have the momentum to be a massive success nintendo hope it to be...well see.

Look at everything going on in the world. This ain't 2017.

Also Nintendo increased the prices of everything. In Europe games cost 90€. People were laughing at that lmao.

90€ for games that look like this in 2025...i'm sorry. No. It's not justifiable.

I am finding value out of mine, but that's because I never owned a Switch 1 so I have a lot of BC games to catch up on.

I would not recommend the console otherwise.

yeah, as much as I want to play Kirby, not paying that price for it, as much as I liked DK, it was very expensive, if the S2 lineup is stronger I wouldn't have picked it up at launch and wait for sales. The launch honey moon period is over for me

I am close to selling mine... Nintendo could you announce something that could maybe maybe be good?
Agreed, so dissapointed so far...how many times are we going to have the same games regurgitated with a shiny new coat but the core gameplay is the same shit we played 15 years ago. Mario tennis, mario golf, mario strikers I could go on..didn't I play these all on gamecube, hell the N64. Not enough new ideas or completely new style to tell them apart from older titles.

I might be wrong here but aren't all Switch 2 games available on Switch 1 as well just lower quality? I always saw the switch 2 as a mid upgrade not a true sequel.

donkey kong, kirby air , and Mario kart world are only on switch 2. The others are kinda like god of war rag, which inlcudes metroid prime 4 and pokemon ZA. It's crazy to me in a yeear where they dropped a new mario kart, donkey kong 3D , kirby, pokemon, AND METROID it's considered a shitty year by people... literally one of their best years.

Well it is basically the Switch Pro.

The issue is the console price. I imagine it will look better when the PS5 Digital's price is $599 but it might be a good idea to rush out the Lite.

So sales were front loaded, but starting to lose momentum. If you told me last year that in Nov, Switch 2+Switch 1 would sell 10% less than Switch 1 last year, I would've called you crazy.

It's pretty clear that Switch 2 is too expensive for the current economic environment.

RIP. We hardly knew ye.

I'll give it another look once they launch some kind of revision and when the system has at least three games I really want. So far it has zero games I really want.

Which games apart from MKW (which sells nowhere near 90 in stores) are 90 euro's?

I don't know how much to read into all these reports about the sales of the Switch 2. Strong start for the all the enthusiasts who wanted the console obviously, but I think Nintendo has to try harder if their intention is to get the mainstream to buy a Switch 2. You can't keep supporting older hardware if you want people to buy newer hardware I think. It's sad for those who still appreciate the older hardware, but it's just the way it is I think.

They're not doing themselves any favors with some enthusiasts also with all the bad publicity regarding greedy practices, and of course game key cards. I do think early in a consoles lifecycle, you need the enthusiasts to sing the praises, and that's what gets the masses to start slowing walking in also. When you got so much negative backlash, there's no praise going around for people to say "i heard good things about this Switch 2 machine"
All the bad press killed my hype and I was in it for day 1 before. I said in another thread that even with my new job and decent raise I just don't care about about a lot of gaming hardware.

But being that I missed out on the initial hype and had to sit on the sidelines of it all I'm just not interested unless there's some MAJOR changes to how they're doing business because if I got in at launch I'd have some major buyers remorse right now.

It should've been, but after having played all of them with the exception of Pokemon (and Hyrule Warriors) the only game I'd consider outstanding in that lineup is Donkey Kong: Bananza.

While not necessarily bad (well, except for Metroid), the rest were pretty disappointing imo. Same goes for their new IP's, both Drag x Drive and Welcome Tour were very disappointing.

I'm waiting for a new Zelda(and a possible oled version with better battery) to dive in. Hopefully these news scare Nintendo and push them to update their game/console pricing.

I am close to selling mine... Nintendo could you announce something that could maybe maybe be good?

I did - one day before Christmas to a guy that most probably wanted one from Amazon but they wouldn't deliver on time for the holidays (got lucky basically).

Now, while I genuinely enjoyed the honeymoon phase, everything after that was…not great.

- I tried to like Mario Odyssey and Mario 3D World. I got bored about six hours into Odyssey and roughly three hours into 3D World. I'm not a huge platformer fan, so that's partly on me, but I just can't tolerate the sheer kiddie-ness anymore (shocking, I know). It creeps me out nowadays.

- Zelda: BOTW left me completely cold. After the 8th dungeon and hours of almost aimless wandering through an empty world, I noped out. How this game received universal acclaim is something I'll never understand.

- I wanted to buy Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound and Shinobi. Nope. 30 fps with Switch 1-level resolution (Shinobi) can go screw itself, especially when those games are also available on XSX and PS5 for the same price, with far better performance and image quality (like all games really).

- I looked at Zelda: Hyrule Warriors DE...Over 60€ for a 7+ year-old game? Hard pass.

- Zelda: Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity? 65 € for a game still trapped in Switch 1 hell - 30 fps and atrocious resolution included...

- What about exclusives like Platinum's Astral Chain? Good luck finding a physical copy under 60-70€...
Same story with Bayonetta 2.

- I spent 45€ on Metroid Dread, a first-party title that still runs at awful Switch 1 resolutions and never received a patch. Why? "Metroid is niche" is probably the usual excuse, right?

- Then there's third-party games, where there's simply no way I'm paying full MSRP for half the resolution or half the framerate (CP2077/Star Wars/Cronos: The New Dawn, etc.).

In the end, it just wasn't worth it. Nintendo consoles are really only for the most hardcore fans- people happy to replay the same 30-year-old franchises, now with their kids. For better or for worse, I'm not part of that demographic.

Add the worst refund policies in the industry (worse than Sony's, if that's even possible), antiquated online features, no Switch 2 versions, mediocre battery life and Joy-Cons that are among the worst controllers ever made for actually playing games… and yeah.

I enjoyed MKW with friends but that too got old very quickly (sparse on content), the console basically become my Metroidvania Indy machine but then I kept thinking "why not just get a Handheld PC for that ?"

I took a big financial hit selling it, too. I had a Savage Raven carrying bag, a grip case, an extra Joy-Con, and other accessories, plus I'd already spent over 150 € on digital games and another 100+ on physical ones. But it just wasn't for me. The hype got to me, and I was reminded - once again - why Nintendo systems simply aren't my thing.

It is what it is

I mean...maybe it's the wrong idea to have oyur biggest selling point of your console on sale for 90 bucks?
No, they do not.
Portugal (2 biggest retailers):
Fnac
Worten

Checked amazon Italy just to see what's happening and...80€

Same for Fnac in France.

UK? Game is selling it for 75 pounds, which is 90€

Maybe some retailers are doing some promos but let's not pretend this isn't the official price for Mario Kart lol.

I knew you were gonna say (only) Mario Kart World. Its physical price was clearly a deterrent to not buy the bundle.

Donkey Kong Bananza, Kirby Air Riders, Mario Party Jamboree TV, Pokémon Z-A, Age of Calamity, Kirby Forgotten Land and Metroid Prime 4 Switch 2 editions all cost 80€ max, and more like 55-60 in retailers.

Mario Kart is the weird exception.

You might want to check the title of that thread to see that they sold 10.36M units in 4 months while also increasing their estimate for the the FY from 15M units to 19M units.

All while people were claiming it was slowing down post the already insane launch success.

Yet, those people where right

Just so you know it's from nintendo.

I know but it's just nonsensical

When you make a product called Switch 2 (TWO)

The basic marketing premise is that it's a Switch better in every respect...

They are still selling a Switch 1 with a better screen that runs all the same games.... :messenger_tears_of_joy: :messenger_tears_of_joy:

Nex is the Wii. SAme playbook. Disruptive experience. Cheaper price. Doesn't have Nintendo quality software and screams gimmick. But undoubtedly took some of the casual/kid/family audience this holiday. And to my surprise it was out over a year ago.

Waiting for Circana/NPD numbers but imo the issues are clear.

Nintendo doesn't offer the value needed to cater to their traditional casual/kids market anymore.
Kids just want what all their friends have and that's a smartphone and for parents the idea of having to buy 70-80€ games (with Nintendo super stubborn on not even making decent sales for their old titles) while there are many f2p games on smartphones is a deal breaker.

For core gamers the product is still immature without an actually appealing lineup and they know that the best time to pick one will be when they make the oled model.

Unfortunately Nintendo needs to wake up and understand that if they don't fix their business model and software prices with the times they're gonna lose markets segments.

Question Mark What GIF by MOODMAN

They obviously weren't. It kept selling insane numbers after the initial launch, as shown in the Q2 report.
Nintendo not even show the numbers of sales to consumers, there's was a lot of evidence that this would happen, Nintendo fanboys just don't want to believe

Fastest selling console of all time without a major Zelda, Mario, Animal Crossing, Mainline Pokemon, or Smash shown off or announced yet.

I'm just here to collect receipts so I can call out the back peddling later on.

I hope this abomination of a console dies a fast and horrible death, Nintendo need to stop treating consumers like idiots (a lot of them are but not everyone)

They boasted about exactly that (sell through) at launch as well.
