Jez Corden: Age of Empires is going to back in a big way. The next title is under development with Unreal Engine

i don't know a great deal but i will say this " i think it's being developed on Unreal Engine because one of the big issues they had with Age Of Empires 4, from what i heard, was Relic's Engine and this engine and development pipeline was very difficult for them to work with and to adapt to the Age of empires, what people expect from Age of Empires. So they (World's Edge) are moving to something more proprietary built on Unreal Engine though. Something more custom and things like that. i don't know who's building it but at least the bones are being made by World's Edge Studios. I would presume they're going to partner with another developer on it".

Again

""Age of Empires remains one of Microsoft's most prolifics IPs and they've really cornered that niche, the whikw real tielme Strategy that it doesn't have the same popularity that it did back in the day. But as Xbox moves deeper into PC gaming i do think like Age of Empires and games like it are definitely going to be a Major part of their purview.

AOE4 was ok, but I don't know why they chose the same time period as AOE2 when that's still being updated with new content lol.

The original AOE DE was left to rot so they could have done ancient era again for 4.

So IDK what time period they'll pick for this one. Hopefully not just Medieval again lol.

Nice, love to see this and Age of Mythology making a comeback

I was really into AoE2 recently but didn't stick with it. This is one of those genres I never really played previously so it would be cool to finish one of these someday. Got like 4 of them on GP to play and not enough time in the day.

You can't be a real human being without a deep love for RTS, best news of 2026 so far.

In the early days, you had the RTS crowd and the FPS crowd, Counter-Strike vs Starcraft, and the FPS won by being cheap and attracting the bros.

While the RTS crowd were left in the dirt as developers forgot how to make a good RTS, and chased the cheap FPS and console cash.

RTS teaches strategy, intelligence, honor and seperates us from the FPS scum.

I salute the development on this game.

I have played all three first Age of Empires, and Age of Mythology as well. I enjoyed all of them.

But Age of Empire IV was just... boring for me. I can't explain why, but I had no fun and leaved the game during the second campaign.

So I don't know what to think about a new one. If it's good, I'm all for it, but I fear to be disappointed again.

Why is it any time I see Unreal engine I immediately lose interest?

To be fair, Tempest Rising (spiritual successor to Command and Conquer) used the Unreal engine and it had no issues.

Stop posting shit from Jez. Any posts about that cunt should be banned.
Hard disagree. Jez is easily the best way we get info on what MS is thinking.

Treat Jez for what he is: a Microsoft/Xbox mouthpiece/shill

But understand that even they can provide useful information.

Beyond all reason is a good one, in alpha right now.

I'm up to for more Age of Empires, but I kinda hope they change things up more like what we got from Age of Empires 2 to 3. I still think 2 is the best, but 3 was at least a fun distinct experience.

4 felt more like refinements, iterations and tweaks on existing systems, than giving me much new. Still fun, but diminished return.

Never got into it even as someone that was big on RTS back then but still glad RTS is coming back starting with Dawn of War 4 and 40K Total War. Now if only Starcraft 3, a new Tiberium Wars, and Red Alert could also return in a big way.

This is a war that only happened in your mind. lol

RTS games popularity started to wane when DotA started gaining traction. After that, MOBAs siphoned off casuals(majority), which meant the competitive MP floor for RTS games skyrocketed. Making it harder to get into.

With the success of the PS1 and PS2, most developers knew that the money was on consoles, so you had way more people making games for the larger gaming crowd on consoles. No one wanted to play an RTS with a Dualshock 2 controller and developers were smart enough not to bother with it. So they had to contend with a smaller market on PC. Which meant fewer games, and fewer innovations.

AOE4 was a safe play; basically AOE2 2. With that said, it has my favourite single player campaign of the entire series, so I'm definitely keen to see what they're up to.

Finally, stutterfest in my RTS genre.

But really, UE use alone is some kind of a slop red flag at this point. Especially from AAA that can afford a custom RTS engine.

Agreed. This guy has as much clout and correctness as hip hop gamer.

Can we have some fucking compass to at least ban complete waste of fucking space and time and not amplify these cunts so they go away?

Finally Microsoft is pushing its advantage with so many IPs.
Age of Empire, Starcraft FPS and then a StarCraft 2 Expansion. Awesome time to be an RTS fan.

AoE4 should have been WW1.

2D RTSs = best RTSs
Because 2D has better readability.

I wouldn't be opposed to another AoE set during the Age of Exploration.

Age of Empires III is still easily my favorite of the bunch. A heretical opinion, I know, but I remember having so much fun playing against Hard/Expert AI, theorycrafting Home City decks/civ builds, and watching multiplayer replays during my high school summers.

I really liked the single player stuff they did on AOE 4. I would love more of the same on the next one. Better history channel than the actual history channel

Last year's GOTY was a UE5 game. Literally the most awarded game of all time.
So fucking what?

You mention one good game and ignore the dozens of others that run like dog shit.

I get the point you're trying to make is that using the Unreal engine doesn't automatically make a game bad, and no it doesn't....but holy fuck is it a red flag for me if there ever was one.

I guess I am in the minority because I think AOE4 is really good and a worthy entry in the series. I would rather see them go back to ancient or go forward to the 1800s though than stay in this high medieval time frame.

I hate the idea of a RTS in UE5 lmao

Age of Empires 2 was awesome back in the day, but i never feel like playing it anymore, because i could be playing either Medieval 2 Total War and its many mods, or Emperor: Rise of the Middle Kingdom. they'll have to innovate a lot to get me interested in whatever this is. it's not like RTS games are dead, either. you either need some sort of strategic map layer like in Total War, or The Great War: Western Front, or go all in on the city building like Manor Lords seems to be doing.
