On New Year's Eve we first anticipated that Nintendo Switch 2 had surpassed the first great milestone of its predecessor in Spain with almost a third less life: 312,000 consoles sold in just 7 months of life, when the first Switch exceeded 300,000 in its first Christmas after 10 months. Thus, Switch 2 marked a new speed record in premiere sales in our country in 2025: so many had never been sold at this point.

But more data remained, both of that week 52 and of the final three days of the year (29, 30 and 31 December) that already belong to the week 1 of 2026, as well as the total results of other manufacturers and games.

And the first mention must be taken by Sony, which already sold a powerful 33,000 machines that week 52 to add about 490.000 PlayStation 5 almost all year round. If we add another impressive 42,000 consoles in the week on horseback between the two almanacs, we can estimate without risk that Sony closed 2025 with more than half a million PS5 sold, an outstanding performance, comparable to that of the 550,000 consoles of 2023 (its first big year after a slow release) and practically traced to the 494,000 PS5 of 2024 (which would also exceed the half 'kilo' adding up to 30 and 31). He's already taking a five-year-old with us.

With those 42,000 machines, Sony's was also the best-selling console of the "first" week of 2026 looking at some Kings that we will consolidate in a couple of days with the data of their week. Nintendo sold another 17,000 Switch 2 in the transition week, leaving its current LTD above 340,000 units once adjusted the previous week and the total 52 up, to 323,000 machines and not 312,000.

Sony domination continues.

It's physical-only (plus MKW was bundled but I don't know if those copies track) y
I would assume the bundle is tracked as a physical sale, that's usually how it's counted.
I dont remember ever hearding of Switch 2 having discounts. Now PS5 having being held discounts for a time, specially here in Brazil.
Discounts or not the Ps5 also had a ~5 month head start as Switch 2 went on sale in June.

But 500k in Spain alone is mighty impressive imo, all things considered.

PS5 is 5 year old and switch 2 had some discounts in Spain.
2020
Switch - 550.000 (59%)(4th year on the market)
PS4 - 230.000 (24%)
PS5 - 90.000 (10%)
Series - 30.000 (3%)
XB1 - 30.000 (3%)
3DS - 10.000 (1%)

2021
Nintendo Switch - 495.000(5th year on the market)
PlayStation 5 - 275.000
Xbox Series X|S - 83.000
PlayStation 4 - 53.000
Game & Watch: The Legend of Zelda - 27.500
Xbox One - 4.000

2022
Switch - 460.000(6th year on the market)
PS5 - 180.000
XSX - 96.000

2023
PS5 - 550.000
Switch - 410.000(7th year on the market)
XSX - 100.000

Sales fact, it took PS5 4th year on the market to outsell Nintendo Switch in yearly sales.

A 5 months head start is nothing compared to well stocked console launch. for reference switch 2 sold 1.6 million in the USA it's first month in the USA. PS4 sold 1 million in 24 hours at launch in the usa. Any one with a bit of common sense know well stocked console launch will probably out do 5 months especially when the console is years old lol.

lets ignore the fact that ps5 had supply issue for 2 years while switch 2 is basically getting 2 holiday periods. a june launch with no stock issues and holiday period with no stock issues is extremely rare and just shows the demand is just no there

Switch 2 was discounted twice in Spain.

It's physical-only (plus MKW was bundled but I don't know if those copies track). Digital rate is 50:50 at the minimum in EU.
Yes spain tracks bundles at retail.

Not trying to discredit that.
But trying to paint Switch 2 as some kinda of let down in holidays despite not being discounted for is what I felt like its kinda of brainrot move to me.

The results for PS5 are quite good. Since normalized stock has been available in Spain (January 2023), it has been selling around 500,000 units every year, making it the best-selling console. This year, it has even surpassed the Switch 2 (which also had a discount from €510 to €450 with MKW during Christmas) by a considerable margin. 42,000 PS5 vs. 17,000 Switch 2 in this first week of the year. Xbox sales figures are so low they're not even worth mentioning.

Yet not selling any games there . 😱
They're selling more games than Nintendo over there. Nintendo sells more physical and tends to have more presence in physical charts whereas physical for PS only the bigger games/high sellers like EA FC26, GTA and Ghost of Yotei can chart.

We should have the data but I don't really have time to look it up. What was the case for PS4 Vs. Switch back in 2017?

Would also be interesting to see the corresponding 7 month number for Ps5. If the Ps5 truly outsold the Switch 2 during that time, that'd be something else.

Sony could barely make ps5 units for about 2 years. It even sold less in 2022 than 2021

Switch 2 is the first console widely available in its release year. It never was unavailable

Top ten physical retail lists, yeah. People tend to buy physical on switch. Especially with low internal storage and slower sd card alternatives. Physical still has good technical advantages on switch beyond resell.

The low physical to digital splits on PlayStation still allow the top games to show up but only the real top sellers because the percentage is lower:

For the first 40 weeks of 2024, only 32% of new PS5 games were sold physically, indicating a strong shift towards digital purchases.
In contrast, the Switch remains predominantly physical, with 65% of games sold physically in the same period

Software sales for PS is something like ~$14B vs ~$6B for Nintendo. Europe is one of Nintendo's weaker markets too vs PS's strongest. Especially Spain. PS are selling more software there, you can bet on that.

Switch 1 launched and was predicted to be failure by most annalists, it was also supply constrained in Spain in 2017. switch 1 made Nintendo brand the most powerful it ever was and launched with it's GTA/mario kart with NO supply issues selling basically the same as switch 1 is not looking good.

See ya in the Japanese sales thread. Or not. Probably not. Those threads seem to always get the least attention around here. Wonder why.

How many japanese people write on NeoGAF compared to those from the western world??

I'm far more interested in USA + Europe data than Japan's to be honest... Those are comparable markets

Japan is its own thing, with a completely different (gaming) culture

If Xbox isn't on the list, does it mean that they are sold out?
It means that Xbox sales kept declining to the point of being small enough to make most physical stores remove the Xbox part of their gaming sections and did stop buying new stock time ago. So sales are now basically zero and totally irrelevant.

Switch 2 is Wii U in Spain. Dead console walking.
No, it's the fastest selling console ever (boith worldwide and in Spain too), sold more in the first natural year year than the Switch 1. And this is considering that Switch 1 got released in March so had 10 months, while Switch 2 got released in June, so sold more and did it in less time (7 months).

This isn't true, Switch 1 never was supply constrained in Spain as can be seen in the numbers posted above. Switch 1 sales declined yoy every year since 2020 because this is what happens in all consoles after their sales peak year, which for Switch 1 was 2020 (thanks to the covid sales peak).

What got seriously supply constrained from 2020 to 2022 in Spain and elsewhere was Xbox Series and particularly PS5, not Switch.

I wonder

a.) how come you are such a Nintendo stan these days (what happened over the last few years? Rhetorical question…?)?

and

b.) how you do not realise the irony of mocking every other country's individual sales thread and for people focusing on them (Spain seems to be a great example of this for some reason) while keep baiting people because they do not shit the One country's (Japan) sales thread you are hyper focused about (as if that should be a well adjusted's person behaviour)?

😂, just kidding… I do not think there is anything to wonder about there.

We can speculate all day. I'm more curious about the data.

If it's obvious that a console launch will result in the equivalent of 5+ months of sales of a system that's already on the market there should be lots of data available to support that. Otherwise it wouldn't be obvious.

If I'm interpreting that correctly, launching in March, Switch (1) should've sold the equivalent of 10+5 months (in terms of Ps4 year 4 monthly sales) in its first year, outselling PS4 by quite a wide margin in 2017. And maybe that was the case, but it'd be interesting to know.

Sony domination continu

That's pretty insane considering switch 2 had a well stocked launch which basically counts as another holiday period for it.
No doubt, you could find them easily even during the holidays. I was quite surprised,I remember the S1 literally was a myth at retail couldn't find one anywhere.. clearly not a issue with S2.
