2026 | Twelve games in twelve months

Following one from last year, this is a continuation of the '12 games in 12 months' challenge for those of us with more pressures on our time, or don't play as much as we used to (or just spend more time in larger games. Rules are similar.

How do I take part?
Claim a 'main post' where you will list all your completions for the year. You can use fancy images or special formatting to make it extra cool. In addition to this post your updates, completions and thoughts as singular posts throughout the year.

How do I know when I've completed a game?
That can be tricky to determine, but it's ultimately up to you. If its a straightforward single player game then it's typically when the credits roll, but if it's say a multiplayer session based game maybe its when you've unlocked a certain feature or completed a battle pass.

Do the completions need to be games released this year?
Nope; any video game will suffice. It can be first plays or replays, classics or recent releases. It can be a game you started last year but are finishing this year.

I'll claim my post here - I did complete last year but got lazy and didn't update. Currently playing:

Dying Light | XSX | Completion of campaign
Veilguard | PS5 | Stopped playing after 25 hours. Was seriously shit.
High on Life | XSX | Completed campaign and most achievements
Deep Rock Galactic: Survivors | PC | Done. All level 4 mysteries complete, really couldn't be bothered grinding for gear for the 5th tier
The Division 2: Battle for Brooklyn | XSX | Completes the DLC and all peripheral bounties etc
Indika | XSX | Bit of a weird game, short though and had a couple of interesting puzzles. 100% completion.
Star Wars Outlaws | PC | Main campaign, most side quests and collectibles.
Stray | PS5 | Finished and rolled credits
Uncharted 4 | PS5 | 100%
Lost Legacy | PS5 | 100%

In play
Red Dead Redemption 1 | XSX
Ball X Pit
FFVII Rebirth
Forbidden West (replay)
Toxic Commando

My post:

1) Cirote3 (GBA) - playing
2) Unreal Gold (PC) - beaten
3) Ace Combat 7 (PC) - beaten, pretty cool game
4) Maximo (PS2) - playing, but might drop
5) Diablo (PC) - beaten
6) Titan Quest (Steam Deck) - beaten
7) Ys Seven (Steam Deck) - playing
8) Perfect Dark (recomp, Steam Deck) - beaten
9) Gothic (PC) - beaten
10) Gothic 2 (PC) - playing

and those are the games I want to play in 2026:

Valkyrie Profile 2 (PS2)
Phantasy Star (MD)

games I dropped in 2026:
Shadow of Mordor (PC) - could be a cool game but I'm not in the mood for a game like that one
Shining Force III: Scenario I (Sega Saturn) - very cool game but I'm not really in the mood for an SRPG.
Crimson Desert (PC) - cool and fun but it seems like it's going to be way too fucking long, plus it didn't grab me as much as I hoped.

12 games? I'm addicted to the GaaS, that's a tough sell homie.

I did grab Clair Obscur and a couple of others on the Steam sale. Maybe I'll shoot for 6.

Let me try again.

I'm playing monster hunter rise, dragon quest 3 remake, Ace attorney trilogy for now. I doubt o can finish something this month, but let's see how far I go.

March edit:

February - kingdom: classic. While a rogue like, I still managed to do a complete run, and roll credits, which is enough in my book. I started kingdom, two lands, but I don't think I am in the mood to keep trying.

March - super Mario Odyssey. Don't got all the moon's, but also got to roll credits. Way less transformations than I expected, but most of them were interesting in some way. It was fun, still playing some of the post game content. Actively considering going back and playing Mario Galaxy on my Wii U because of it, but we will see.

May edit:
April: I finished God of War (2018) in the god of war difficulty. Starting was really hard, but became way easier at the end. Still took me 75h to roll credits, but I killed all Valkyries, so...

And was a good thing I decided to kill it because the last "boss" was disappointing, was really hoping something bigger would show up, but no. Outside of that, the game is very fun, the scenery is incredible, the equipaments are cool but the better ones look the worst, lol. Is also kinda surprising how much of ocarina of time it reminded me, with the central connecting hub, and having to come back later with a new item to activate some of the points of interest. Nordic culture was interesting, but I also felt like was being told all about it instead of actually living it.

But man, when did PS4 games stopped looking like the most realistic games ever? they look great at distance, but looking at walls and skin up close, ugh. I also bought a resurrection stone just to stop hearing Atreus yelling some stupid shit when I die. Man, I hate kids in games, and he even helped a lot on the later half of the game.

I also started playing Bloodborne and dragon ball fighter z, but I'm considering going back to ace attorney.

I sit somewhere between the '12' and '52' games in a year goals so I'll join the one I can actually do ;)

I do play a lot of games so in order to make this an actual challenge I think what I'll do is consider a game "complete" after obtaining all achievements or at least all non-multiplayer achievements as I don't really bother with those. Also only games I start this year so my recently "completed" Wuchang won't count.

Basically, for me, this will be 12 perfect games in 12 months.

If I can read 12 books in a year, why not 12 games as well. Hopefully even more.

Currently playing Ghost of Yotei. Started it after Christmas, but I'll still count it since I'll finish it this year.

  1. Ghost of Yotei - 35 hours - 2/5
  2. Trine Enchanted Edition - 8 hours - 3/5
  3. Plague Tale: Innocence - 12 hours - 4/5
  4. Forspoken - 21 hours - 4/5

This is better than the 52 games nonsense that I couldn't possibly do but kept trying anyway.

  1. Star Wars Outlaws - GamePass on PC - I kinda liked the game but the Ubisoft connect experience was fucking miserable. Game was not available to download on PC until 15 or more hours later than console. Ubisoft Connect failed during initial download and then had to run for the better part of the day to complete. Near constant connection issues kept throwing errors that appeared in the game menu. And over a dozen crashes to desktop while I played. I have never experienced such bullshit with a modern PC game. I even subbed to Ubi+ to play AC Shadows earlier this year without any issues.
  2. High on Life 2 - Gamepass - Liked it about as much as the first one. Hope there is a 3rd.
  3. Super Mario Wonder on Switch 2 - Played through co-op with my soon to be 7 year old.
In Progress:
  • It takes 2 - playing with my youngest
  • Pokopia - I only tried this to be able to help my youngest - got hooked
  • Minishoot adventure

Dropped games:
  1. Mio - Gamepass - played for over an hour, game feels like a generic Metroidania that took too much for me to feel like I made any progress at all. Found a couple of mods but nothing to help me reach a place I couldn't reach. Basically poor design for a metroidvania to not give the player something that makes the game click in the amount of time I played.
  2. Avatar - Gamepass - Played a couple of hours. Nice looking game but nothing making me want to spend 40 hours in it.

Maybe this is a better thread for me than the 52 one, because I tend to play lots of RPG's which take a long time. So I'll take this challenge this year, but will probably finish more.

Let's try for it, although with me liking cRPG games that will be hard.

Oblivion Remastered (cheating here, the main quest is super short)
The Alters (started in 2025, probably got less than 10 hours to go)
Hollow Knight
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 - probably first game I will play on Legion Go 2
Persona 4 Golden
Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous - this one will be ouch
Baldur's Gate 3
Dishonored 2
Prey
Space Marine 1
Boltgun
Chaos Gate: Demonhunters
Alien: Dark Descent

13 in total, let's where and when we end up.

Edit:

Progress so far:
January - nothing
February - Hogwart's Legacy (Feb 2nd)

I'll try this year.

Currently replaying Tales of Berseria. Couldn't wait for the remaster. It's been 6 years since I've played it.

Still holds up, a great game. My favorite Tales game by far.

Beat the game fully on normal and hard plus the extra mode. Didn't do it on the final hardest difficulty and likely never will.

3. Kena Bridge of Spirits

It had been years since I played it and it was just as good the second time. Can't wait for the sequel.

Beat the campaign and the dlc and currently still playing some of the multiplayer stuff likes raids. This game became the shooter I didn't know I needed. Very fun and I absolutely loved exploring post pandemic DC and seeing all the little details everywhere.

Great stuff. This thread was a really good outlet for me last year so lets go for it again!

OK
______________________________________________________

1) Resident Evil 3 Remake (7/1/26)

Somehow never played the original so I can't speak to what seems like people's general disappointment in this entry but I liked it. A short, fun, rollercoaster ride of a game. Nothing earth shattering but overall worth the time and the small amount I payed for it in the steam sale.
______________________________________________________

2) Bully (27/1/26)

Finally got around to playing this after having it in my steam library for years. Yes its a little old fashioned and the gameplay is very much "early Rockstar" but I still enjoyed the hell out of it. Good fun and doesn't outstay its welcome.
______________________________________________________

3) Resident Evil 4 HD Edition (30/3/26)

Still great even after all these years. Silly story as always but compelling gameplay and action make it still an all-time classic.

______________________________________________________

4) Dishonored (27/4/26)

Hadn't touched this since the 360 days but its still great. It's got that great open-ended feel to it while still keeping a solid focus from mission to mission. Another one I used to experiment with x86 emulation on android and yet again its absolute witchcraft. 720p, medium, pretty much locked 60fps on my Odin 2. If Valve can keep FEX development moving along at this pace then gaming on ARM is definitively the future.

______________________________________________________

5) Saint Slayer - Spear of Sacrilege (4/5/26)

Really fun homage to 8bit Castlevania games. Really accurate pixelart style with some more modern flair thrown in here and there. Demands you play and replay to memorize levels and enemy patterns, just like it was back on the NES. An excellent "weekend game" thats very well priced at $10. An easy win for x86 android emulation as well. Gamenative kicks ass.

Well, I made it to 24 last year and I would guess that is about where I'll be at the end of this year as well. I'm not a completionist and I try to get through most games as quickly and efficiently as possible. I consider a game finished when I complete the main story/quest and credits roll and usually don't engage much with side content unless it's necessary. Also, I play a lot of Strategy games that I consider finished when I complete a campaign because they don't have a main story mode (Warno, Stellaris, Sins of a Solar Empire, etc...)

I also regularly play many games that are never finished because they are intended to have indefinite replay value or pvp multiplayer/gaas like Battlefield, Halo, Arc Raiders, Forza, Flight Sim, Crew, Riders Republic, etc..

Games that I know I'll play or that I'll probably play and might be finishing this year and some I will predict starting with new releases:

Halo
GTA
Fable
Crimson Desert
Saros
Control Resonant
Tomb Raider Atlantis

Star Wars Outlaws
God of War Ragnarok
Horizon Forbidden West
Jedi Survivor
Mass Effect Andromeda
Red Dead Redemption

Total War Napoleon
Total War Rome 2
Total War Pharaoh
Total War Warhammer 3
Battletech
Homeworld 3
Sins of a Solar Empire 2
Warhammer 40K Battlesector
Wargame Red Dragon
Mars First Logistics
Planet Crafter

First game down. Was already working on this but it was a shorter/easier completion. Took me just under 11 hours and most of it was done on my Steam Deck away from home. Pretty fun game that emulates the Zelda CDi games animation and gameplay without actually being bad itself. Had some good chuckles at the jokes and references. Not a difficult or long game but requires at least 3 playthroughs for all achievements.

Wicked Seed comes out at the end of the month and will likely be my main game until REquiem.

MY MAIN POST

So I wound up knocking out my second one much faster than I thought. Had picked this up along with my Arzette at the tail end of the winter sale. Wound up enjoying it a lot and blasted through it over the weekend since I had nothing else going on. Another fairly short game and was easy to nab all the achievements in a single playthrough.

Gonna feel dumb for participating if I hit 12 completions in only a few months.

First game I'm putting on a list is the first game I've actually dropped this year.

Ghost of Yotei - 35 hours (dropped).
This is really surprising. Not only because I loved the first game, but because I tend to really like these streamlined Sony games.

It's just too little, too late. I've played Ghost of Tsushima twice, and Ghost of Yotei is more of the same to a fault. The same lame platforming, perfectly placed wall cracks you squeeze through, the predictability, inane conversations ... it all added up until I couldn't be bothered anymore.
Every mission starts with you walking and talking with a boring NPC. You get to a point of interest, you fight, you walk and talk more, next point of interest, you fight again, and then it's usually over. And this is doubly true for main missions. I can't remember a single memorable mission, or a memorable conversation. They're simply not there, and yet the game has them for hours and hours.

All of this is true for most Sony games, and especially for Tsushima, but at one point I must've just gotten fed up with it.

The first breaking point was picking out flowers with Kuki. Such a buzzkill, and such a pacing killer.
The second, and the final one, was confronting The Dragon for the first time. I just KNEW he's going to get away, and it's done in such a predictable and cheap way that I decided to drop it.

It's such a weird feeling. Dissecting the game, it does almost everything better than, or at least on par with, Ghost of Tsushima, yet I couldn't wait to drop it. And I played Tsushima for 50 hours this summer and loved it.

Maybe I'm just not in the right mood for it 🤷‍♂️.

2/5

Challenge accepted!

This was fun last year, and I ended up at 13 games finished so I'll try it again.

I'll update this post with a list throughout the year.

1. Metroid Prime 4
Disappointing at first but in the end I still enjoyed it. First Prime game I've completed.

2. Super Metroid
Still one of my absolute top favorites. Usually my #1 or #2 all-time.

3. Metroid
First time going through this. No nostalgia here for me and it wasn't very good imo. But fun to see the origin of the IP!

4. Zelda 2: Adventures of Link
One of my old favorites, plays like a Souls game in combat and how you lose exp and restart in a starter hub zone.
Extremely difficult but doable when using save states.

5. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33
Finally! This one was a challenge in itself.
I played it at launch and fell asleep during the tutorial… Played a bit more but dropped it after one play session. Never understood why it got so much praise.
But I swore to go back to it and give it another chance.
Finally did and played til the end.
I still don't understand the extreme praise but now that I'm done I would rate it 7/10. The story is very good, mature, and the design as well, I liked all characters too.
But the combat, while good in theory, is waaay too focused on timing parries and dodges. To the point that I wonder if you can go through it without any upgrades at all if you nail all the timings.
Definitely over-hyped.

I actually completed 12 games last year (if you count 70 hours of Arc Raiders and Resident Evil 4 Separate Ways as its own game, it's my rule so it counts).

2025:
2/11 Persona 3 Reload (PS5)
2/19 Star Ocean: The Second Story R (Switch)
4/8 Fantasian Neo Dimension (Switch)
6/19 SaGa Frontier 2 Remastered (Switch)
7/30 Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade (PS5)
7/31 Resident Evil 4 Remake: Separate Ways (PS5)
8/15 Super Mario Bros Wonder (Switch)

11/9 Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles (Switch 2)
11/10 Ace Combat 6 (XBox One BC)
12/31 Arc Raiders (70 hours)

Already starting off 2026 strong with:
1/10 Romancing Saga 2: Revenge of the Seven (Switch 2)

Currently I'm playing Expedition 33 and Trials of Mana. These year I''d like to also beat:
Xenoblade Chronicles X
Metroid Dread
Octopath Traveller 2
Fire Emblem Fortune's Weave
FF7 Rebirth
Control
Dragon Quest 11 S
Ace Combat 8

That list might change (I've fallen off DQ11 and Octopath Traveller 2 in the past but the saves are still there) but I'm still going to aim for 12 this year.

I'm going to try accomplishing this.

Expedition 33
Shinobi Art of Vengence

Vampire Crawlers
Slay the Spire 2

Absolum

Plan on doing this exclusively on either the Steam Deck or Steam Machine.

I'm in;
January- Immortality. Twist was cool(gave me goosebumps every time) but story was bs. There was no point in watching those 3 amateur movies. It was short and unique so I'm giving it a 8.

Feb- Mega Man 1- played it's remake via nso/genesis emulator, it was great. I bought all the other mega mans after that.

March- Broken Sword 2; %85 completed, I will finish it before 2027.

April- Resident Evil Hd remake- Whenever I start to think games don't pull me in anymore, I come across a game like this and can't get up for hours until I finish it. A true classic. I played with unlimited saves and on easy difficulty, though—I probably couldn't have handled it otherwise. It's a complex game and has a lot of backtracking, but it was amazing.

Just finished Dying Light 1. It was shite. Janky as he'll and only really got to start using abilities at the end of the game, wtf

4. Zelda 2: The Adventure of Link
Replay of an old classic. Really enjoy this one, I want a remake.
Not a single life lost! At least from the game's perspective… I played it on Switch 2 and used a million save states instead.

2025 Results
As usual, I define my efforts by obtaining platinum trophies, though I will aim to post a final verdict on my 2026 experiences in this thread as I complete each game.

I don't expect to keep the same pace as last year (wherein I averaged just over 4 platinum trophies per month) and will be aiming primarily to clear 20 or so games from my backlog alongside 10-15 new releases once it's all said and done. The year will start slowly due to work demands but once February ends I will be allowed to settle into a more predictable routine

Trine Enchanted Edition - 8 hours

Game two, and the first one I've actually finished this year.

It's fairly straightforward, but enjoyable for what it is. I don't play many 2D platformers, so it was a nice palate cleanser after Ghost of Yotei.
Fairly simplistic gameplay, story, level design and enemy design, but there's definitely charm to it. I really like the physics based nature of the game. A lot of times it made it seem like I didn't necessarily do what the game intended me to do, and instead I've managed to fumble my way with the physics of the game and it somehow worked (which I've really liked).

The 3 characters are all useful in different scenarios. Wizard for when I'm out of ideas and I just want to stack 3 boxes and jump my way out. The thief when I want to be nimble and quickly get to somewhere. I don't know if she's faster and jumps higher than other characters, but it felt that way. And the knight for fighting and blocking traps/projectiles. Other than their gameplay differences, characterisation wise they're really barebones and don't have much personality.
The music is also nice, very relaxing. The last level was a bit of a pain, especially considering how the rest of the game is chill.

I liked this, and wouldn't mind more games like it.

3/5

1. System Shock Remake [COMPLETE]
2. Fallout New Vegas [COMPLETE]

3. Planescape Torment...

I have a priority list but am incapable of sticking to a plan so…

Need to finish from last year:
- Nier Replicant PS4 (already played 360 ver)
- LoZ: Breath of the Wild (Switch)
- Persona 2: Eternal Punishment (PSP)

Need to finish from previous years:
- FFIV The After Years (PSP)
- Shadow Hearts II (PS2)
- Silent Hill: Downpour (360)

I'm in! For 2026 I have set a spending limit of 120€ for the whole year of games. As I mostly play arcade style games or smaller games I want to see how many games - if any - I can one credit clear this year!

I have the main campaign of ZeroRanger close to finish and will most likely 1cc it this year.

I am also mid run in Star Fox 64, Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time and Tunic currently.

#1 January 18th: Tunic cleared.
header.jpg

The game has superb presentation, puzzles are clever and the isometric camera system is close to brilliant. Combat is the weak link: it is quite poor most of the time and just about mediocre at best.

The manual system is one of the best features and I hope to see something similar in future games.

#2 Sometime in January as well: Downwell Normal Campaign clear
header.jpg

Downwell is a quite well designed roguelite game with very little meta progression. It is an arcade style game with shmup and platformer elements. Highly recommended! One of the early bangers from Devolver Digital publishing.

#3 Sometime in January or February: Sektori Redeemer Campaign clear
header.jpg

It's an audiovisual feast but in the long run the game could be better designed: The constant attention to the upgrade system wears me down. Luckily there are several game modes and some of them get rid of the system entirely.

#4 February 4th: Into the Breach
header.jpg

Superb turn based tactics game! One of the best games to be included in the "roguelike" category. The difficulty is on spot: you have to figure the mechanics out and engage with the game to beat it. Recommended for the tactical minded players!

Unnumbered entry: Loop Hero
header.jpg

The premise is decent enough: you play as both the hero and the dungeon master against yourself but the execution is a randomized cookie clicker numbers go up casino RNG based time waster.

Best thing about the game is the sound design and the marvelous pixel art portraits for each main character.

I want to post about this game but not number it since I will not waste any more time with it. I played just under 4 hours. That is enough. I recommend against this game.

Claiming this little hole in the earth.

January 2026 has started off stellar for me, having knocked out two games already. 2025 ended with my tally reaching only 10 for the year, and I got off to a decent start then as well, so this is not a sign of potential success at all, just an anecdote!

January Completions:

1. Alone in the Dark (2024) - Xbox Series X
2. Silent Hill f - Xbox Series X/PC

Both of these titles beg for multiple runs! Silent Hill actually had me anticipating the second time through.

Currently scrounging the massive collection for the next title to get the full attention. I like to have a couple games rotating and once that I focus my time on. Tonight I will be playing No Rest For the Wicked on the PC, so that wont be contributing to my completion list for the year.

I'm in. I didn't finish one game last year. Gonna try and get back into gaming more. My first finished game of this year is Alan Wake 2. I'm gonna be working on my current 3rd run on Village. I left off at Stronghold so almost done. Will also finish my 3rd run on RE4 remake I'm on ch 12. I been also playing the Division lately as well as Witcher 3. I'm not sure I'll end up finishing that as I never finished a Witcher game all the way. Of course Requiem will be added to the list as well.

Migrating my game-by-game thoughts/review to the 52 game thread since it makes little sense to post the same content twice, plus this is intended to be a more relaxed group of participants.

Beat Ace Combat 7 last night. Hard difficulty, had a lot of fun but felt like the last few missions didn't scalate as much as I've wanted to.

Still a pretty cool game with some very intense high moments.

I'd like to participate, but I've got too many live‑service games in my rotation, so it cuts into the time I have for traditional SP games. That said, I'm currently playing Borderlands 4 and I'm about halfway through the single‑player campaign.

January:
  • Borderlands 4 (currently playing)
  • Arknights: Endfield (will start playing on Jan 22, and I'll probably finish the content available in the 1.0 version sometime in February)

Well I'm not totally off pace just yet. Working on Clair Obscur the past couple of weeks. But I'll probably feel compelled to 100% it so I probably have a long way to go. And I am perfectly happy to sit there for a couple of hours under-leveled on expert trying to perfectly parry my way to glory against anything I run across instead of just coming back later. Next up Hades 2 I think, which I should be able to knock out in Feb even if Clair Obscur bleeds over.

Reserving. This is a cool thread idea. I want to get out of my gaming funk where everything seems like a Ubi fetch quest or a disappointment from Nintendo, both to be avoided. For the last couple of years I have just done Elden Ring and CoD for that reason.

This thread could inspire me to get my gaming joy back.

Silent Hill 2 Remake ✅
Resident Evil 8
Resident Evil Requiem
Nioh Remastered
Emio: The Smiling Man

Decided to start with a long overdue replay of Half-Life 2 (and EP1/2). I've not played any of it since before 2010. Never completed EP2 somehow.

I'm part way through Ravenholm. The game still holds up remarkably well today.

First game of the year done:

System Shock Remake. Great punch up of an old classic.

Final boss fight was trash in a whole new way.

Hope the hints of a remake SS2 bear fruit.

Just finished Dragon Quest 1 HD-2D Remake!

Short game that gets pretty tough at the end. I wouldn't have beaten it if it wasn't for this thread.

Game 1 - Metroid Prime 4: Beyond - Nintendo Switch 2

First beaten game of 2026, the newest member of the Metroid franchise. The game took years to make, and it took me about 17 hours to beat. This has been a divisive game, but I mostly enjoyed it. My only big gripe with it is that enemies respawn far too quickly, which makes backtracking a chore. And the backtracking is almost necessary, since bosses in this game can be tough, even on normal difficulty. I tried to collect eveything, but like I always do, I missed two scans early in the game. There seems to be no New Game + either, so I would have to beat the game completely and just remember which ones I missed.

And life is way too short for replaying games. At least immediately.
