I've had plus since its beginnings on the ps3 generation when multiplayer was still a free service... because i liked and wanted its benefits.

I don't really go playing outside the house. So I don't I can't say. The main reason I got it was to be home and be off the Ps5 that's up stairs, it is hard wired. Next vacation I'll be taking it.
Latency is ok, I've been playing Nioh 3 and timing is good.

I've been playing my Switch 2 so much, but there are things on Ps5 I want to be playing but need the convenience of being able to just stop and not be tethered to one specific room.. Found myself shockingly thinking "if I had that portal.." but I always worry lag will be bad. While i will be playing in the house some, a lot will also be at another location though it does have good internet speeds there. Wish I could try it and decide.

Cloud streaming will never be my preferred method of play, although for trialing some games out or casual games it's surprisingly a good experience on the Portal.

I was skeptical, mostly for a cloud connected device but for my needs works perfectly. I can't honestly say it works great outside the house since I haven't tried it, but while home in different rooms, with nephews, son streaming movies, games on my network it has worked flawlessly.
I wouldn't be shocked if at a hotel or Airbnb with their WiFi it'll be shit. On portal subreddit many speak wonderful things outside their homes , on planes , hotels etc.. but , yeah until I try it I'll take it with a grain of salt. I also got it at Best Buy used excellent condition for 140.

Maybe try it on a phone and/or tablet first? If it works well on those, I'd imagine the Portal would.

I don't have anything to game on right now. Would you recommend just getting the PS Portal or also try to snag a Digital PS5? If I passed on the PS5 itself, I'd be looking to buy the 30th Anniversary edition on Amazon for $400, but I having second thoughts about that one over either the white or black variations. I mean, an OLED Portal could be on the way. Please help me the right choice. I need games!
If you've waited this long might as well wait for rumored ps portal oled for maybe $300. Or just grab a ps5 digital and enjoy full fat experience on big screen, and grab oled portal later.

I think I will do exactly that tomorrow.
Could get Switch 2 for much lower total price tag. Dockable and portable, access to huge back cataloged. Depends on what you're after.

PS3 games aren't included, yes, around 350 i think. But there are some PS4 games as BC titles for streaming, just not all of them.

You can play 2 games on your PS5 this way. One game suspended, while you play the 2nd game via streaming.
I didn't know that. Don't normally play two games at once. I save and exit as if I have OCD.
You can just stream from your PS5 without the cloud sub. As long as you have good upload speeds at home you're good. This is for all games too and not just ones on the cloud.

The Portal does cloud streaming now, right? This should make that device a lot more useful on vacation, etc.

So I downloaded the Playstation App on my Laptop and opened it in the location I plan to mostly use the device from, potentially.
I'm trying it out with Horizon - while it's not a first person shooter or something else that would require the fastest response, it's still an action game and should give a good idea of whether or not this is a viable setup.
I've messed around for about 15 minutes and it seems very promising, honestly. There is a little bit of lag, but nothing crazy. I mostly notice/am bothered when trying to make a quick, precision shot with the bow and I can observe the slight delay on the reticle. Otherwise during exploration/melee it's not all that noticeable. I'm going to give it some more time to see how it ends up feeling long term and might try a couple other genres or games to get a better idea, like Resident Evil 4 or whatever. Occasionally there are graphical hiccups where the whole screen jolts a bit with discoloration, but it seems to be pretty random, very transient, and not a bother.
So this is the kind of performance I could expect from the Portal then? It may even be able to improve a bit, because my Ps5 isn't even hard wired to the router and I'm sure that could help just a tad. The reduction in visual fidelity would also be less observable on the smaller screen.

I don't have a Portal but I'd assume so because it uses the same streaming technology. However this is only an assumption as I don't have both. I believe it will give you a good idea though. Yeah keep trying it out with different genres and such.
I used to use it on Vita all the time and had no issues streaming from my PS4 but it's all dependant on your personal setup because many have not had the same success on their Vita. I remember playing Destiny just fine on my Vita.
Also streaming PS3 games from PSN on my PS5 had no problems either even Sonic Adventure 2 was mostly fine.
So you think they should let people buy a Portal & play all these games for free?

Not for free. But not at the price it is. It costs more than the device itself.
Oh, fair enough. I'd recommend a second hand PS5 over a Portal then to be fair. That would be a good thing to go for with similar cost, then you can always use your phone to stream with the included dualsense too and play more games than whats available on cloud too.
