New PS4/PS5 games bought digitally, now require a online check in every 30 days

You know we live in 2026, right?

Not 2013.

Seriously, you have your PC connected to Wi-Fi or a wired connection 24/7, but you find it incomprehensible to have a console connected to the internet?

It's all very absurd, guys.

I don't buy digital PlayStation games; I only have Battlefield V.

But if you buy PSN games, I assume you have even more reason to have your console connected to the internet.

Which makes the alarm being raised here simply ridiculous.

PC gamers laugh at the demise of phisical console games, about the price increase on console hardware and on consoles putting DRM measures for digital buys... yet they don't have phisical games, pay very high prices for the hardware and play on a plattfom/system that is basically walking DRM...

This thread is a marvel at showing how resentful and frustrated people are about the success of the Playstation. :messenger_tears_of_joy:

These guys still have hemorrhoid pain because of a 20-year-old video that STILL APPLIES to the Playstation.

PC gamers also have access to GOG (with no DRM and offline installers), pirated copies of games (with no DRM and offline installers) and library of software dating back into the 80s with no artificial "generation" walls preventing them from playing old software (try playing your digital PS3 games on PS4/PS5).

Every game (even denuvo ones) gets archived at some point. When Sony decides to flip the switch...

I have a friend like that, he makes unfunny jokes and nobody laughs... but he thinks everyone doesn't understand his jokes.

Do you call him stupid or intellectual dishonest often? Because I would rather have an enemy than a friend like you.

It's just that your joke is so bad it can't even be understood as a bad joke, but rather as a statement.

My friend is better than you... everyone knows it's a lame joke.

This proves that you "PC gamers" don't care about using DRM.

If you did care, everyone would buy from GOG and Steam would have already gone bankrupt.
Most of my library is from GOG, i may even rebuy a game if it later releases there (did with Doom 2016 and Eternal most recently). If i have to buy from steam, i always check for any intrusive drm.

Same can be said about console gamers and physical games... only small portion of both player bases actively care about this stuff (they are too dumb to see where this is going).

But on PC, no matter that - pirates and GOG will still make all games playable in the future. Once consoles ditch disc drives, you will be fucked.

So it's confirmed or denied?

Still, this can't be true, not how it's worded in the OP, they can't just remove a license after 30 days offline, that would be the worst DRM in the history of bad DRMs.

They are not removing it, but you won't be able to use those games unless you connect online and console checks the license status.

Ah, then it's a nothing burger unless you're in a submarine or living in some "Why would I want to live there?" place.
It will suck in the future though if servers are down but they might tweak the check-ins before pulling the plug.

If it was intentional they would have applied this retroactively

Maybe they legally can't do that, they just released new EULA with "we can do anything we want" type of laungage.

What happens if PSN is hacked and goes offline for 24 days or more? This happened, it's not science fiction.

"People on the internet are dumbasses, more at 11."

Well, that should be the end of it.

It's amazing how massive reactions get when very little data or faulty data is presented as factual. I'd like to think this will be the end of it too, but I'm sure we'll be hearing about that time 'Sony tried to impose monthly check-ins' for years to come.

Meanwhile, steam > offline mode, indefinitely able to play my downloaded games.

PC stays winning
to be fair steam is drm and you dont own games either. you are at the mercy of steam being around and letting you install those games. also there is still an issue that randomly occurs where you need to login sometimes after a while or you cant play the game. Although there are other options on pc where you actually do own the game like gog,etc or worse comes to worse you sail the seas.

Yeah this right here. PC is becoming more and more attractive all the time despite its flaws.

Then you're locked out until it's back on I guess. It's not a common thing so I wouldn't be concerned about it. 20 years from now it might be a bigger deal.
