Nagoshi Studios deleted their YouTube Channel and trailers of Gang of Dragon

Well, Netease f'ed them up - and Nagoshi studio was like a kite without a line.

Sega could have bought the studio and IP, but it overlaps way too much with Yakuza series too - and a lot of legal issues I hear.

China money for foreign studios is drying up.

And that is also true. With success with Wukong, they are going for domestic dev for much cheaper cost - and economy in China isn't too hot now either.

The Irony that Nagoshi left Sega to make his own Yakuza style game which isn't coming out, and yet Sega is still pumping out Yakuza games annually.
He didn't leave SEGA. He was kindly shown the way to the exit. Which was SEGA's best decision in 20 years. He simply demonstrated again that he was just good at wasting money, this is why his project was canceled. This guy doesn't know how to make anything else than the same Yakuza games, but the market is already saturated with them.

His position started to crumble when he made fun of one Puyo Puyo player calling him chigyu. I think he apologized, but this probably just showed to the public that he probably was quite an shitty person behind curtains. The japanese certainly didn't forget about this.

He also forced the new Sakura Wars game to go action and the result was not the best ( I think the game is quite weak in almost everything else too), so his results were not the best.

He also was the one that made fun of Nintendo saying that the system is for kids and that the Yakuza franchise would not go there. All of that was because that Yakuza 1 and 2 HD sold like shit on the Wii U. Imagine just skiping the most popular console in Japan because of that. The franchise could be bigger there now.

All of this makes me think that he thinks too much of himself and too little of others.

Sakura Wars 6 is pretty competent at a sequel reboot, except for the game part, honestly
If it were a SRPGz it would have been much better received

Guy was corrupt to the core, he was constantly bribed by Sony. Good riddance.

I was really interested in the game (because of my fav seiyuu). But the gameplay was really mediocre in the demo.
The gameplay is just that. You don't learn new moves, your character doesn't get better, you don't equip different things. It is just there for the sake of it. IF you play it, it is not for that part, it's for the interactions with the characters, some are good, some are bad (Azami).

I think the game even suffers from some old designs that could be updated, like every fucking time an character speaks, their theme song plays. Not just in an personal interaction between the main character and the girl but EVERY FUCKING TIME, even if it's an group conversation. You'll see their theme song playing, then the other character, then it returns to the first one, it can get quite annoying.

Triple A gaming is in a bad place. Luckily there are incredible other games out there not tied to big publishers that are pretty amazing so we will be fine as those playing games, but being in the industry must be pretty rough.

I didn't follow the story very closely, but it's more likely that he HAD to leave because there was a disagreement on where the series should go next (including changing to turn-based jRPG in the mainline entries). Don't think they'll want him back unless Yakuza games start flopping and the series will be in jeopardy.

Just one other example that shows how just being able to make popular games doesn't make you successful. Very few creators survive the transition from working at a big studio to their own and much less if they continue doing shit the same way.

I don't wish failure to anyone but cases like this or Inafune demonstrate that sometimes studios cannot survive on their own and that's way they get sold to bigger ones often to get shut down eventually.

This is not good. Please, let this game be released.
Practically zero chance

Bummer. Imagine Sony making this as an exclusive game for 1/3 the price of Concord, Marathon or this Horizon garage.
Seems like this project is toast. Hopefully there's no hard feelings at RGG and he comes back as a senior consultant for Yakuza 9.
Sure, Sony should blow 100m dev budget on a game that will sell how much? 2m at best? leaving the whole project deep in red
There is a reason why game was cut of of funding - Nagoshi spend a lot and deliver pennies

I personally think Nagoshi Studios gone to wrong publisher for this game.
Yeah, they should have found stupid guys ready to pour money into failed project regardless of the check

no i am saying how is it Reddit and if it is Reddit why is it bad
Reddit is shorthand for a certain type of moronic fan who clap like seals for anything a series does no matter how stupid.

What was once a gritty series about gangsters becoming about pirate ships in the ocean is obviously a bad case of mission creep.

And everyone agrees they fucked up big time with Kiwami 3.

while all this may very well be true: after he left the yakuza series, & after a dozen hours of like a dragon, i bailed on the series (which i've loved since the ps2) & i've never looked back. he may've been a one-trick pony, but, damn, it was a great trick...

One trick pony? Man, the guy is one of the greatest inside Sega. He is responsible for a lot of great games from them in the past.

Also, you lost bigly on droping during Yakuza - Like a Dragon. The game have one of the best stories and endings in the series (and it was made when Nagoshi was still making the decisions contrary to what some people may think). Also Infinite Wealth is a really good game too and the battle system is way, way better.

well, the one-trick was in reference to the new, now failed, game. & as for all i'm missing? glad you've enjoyed them. like a dragon lost me 'bigly'...

I mean that doesn't seem totally fair. Admittedly he had made quite a few of them, but his resume has to be one of the most diverse in gaming... period.

Them doing this makes me think the trailer was just a target render or something like how they wanted their vision of the game but not actual real gameplay. something like Perfect Dark. because there is no way a game this hyped and polished to be canned like this. other publishers would love to get their hands on a near finished game like this.

sucks because it did look promising.

yes I still want to play the remake of three but I understand the issues but the Pirate game I hear is amazing

I'm surprised the trailer was in English and not just a sub job

I'd flip this and say I think Nagoshi went to the wrong game for this publisher...or any publisher. The highest ceiling it could've ever hoped to hit was "great Yakuza game" which is extremely distant from anything industry shaking or zeitgeist defining.

This is a guy who has directed shit from Daytona to Monkey Ball to Binary Domain. Defaulting to notYakuza--while the original series is still actively developed and increasingly popular--is a real case of hitching your horse to the wrong wagon.

Also the fact Saga is also releasing Stranger Than Heaven which directly competing with it.

Can't say i'm too disappointed. Yes, the TGA trailer looked extremely good (thanks again to Unreal Engine 5 for carrying this gen visually), but as soon as the actual gameplay screenshots dropped on Steam I noped out. It is always a bad sign when there is such a huge disconnect between the cinematic and gameplay visuals, because it shows where the budget is really going. So, it's not too surprising that Nagoshi ran out of other people's money.

It was also baffling that this was only announced for Windows. It's a really stupid move that limits the exposure of the game. Maybe if PS5 and Switch 2 versions were announced too, and NetEase subsequently saw increased demand for the game from console players, they may have been willing to gamble with providing the rest of the game's funding.

The game looked graphically good, but one of the charms of the Yakuza series is its wackiness. The trailer was lacking that so it came off as just GTA: Japan.
