Ring of fireworks ... the entire palm is illuminated by display
SNN2124AA-682_657709a.jpg

A GLITTERING array of stars were outshone last night by a display of a MILLION fireworks at the £15million launch party for the world’s poshest resort.

The pyrotechnics at the £1.5billion Hotel Atlantis, on the man-made Palm Jumeirah Island resort in Dubai showed the worldwide credit crunch wasn’t hurting everyone.

It was SEVEN times as big as the display that launched the Beijing Olympics in August and stretched along the 320 miles of Palm Jumeirah, illuminating the Arabian Gulf.

It followed a concert by KYLIE MINOGUE who was paid £1.5million for a 40-minute set.

Her audience included royalty, business tycoons, sports stars and a Who’s Who of showbusiness.

Actors ROBERT DE NIRO, DENZEL WASHINGTON, WESLEY SNIPES, BEN AFFLECK and RHYS IFANS rubbed shoulders with Hollywood beauties CHARLIZE THERON, MISCHA BARTON and MARY-KATE OLSEN, singing stars DAME SHIRLEY BASSEY and supermodel AGYNESS DEYN.

Virgin boss SIR RICHARD BRANSON chatted to the Duchess of York, while the world of sport was represented by tennis legend BORIS BECKER and basketball superstar MICHAEL JORDAN.

OPRAH WINFREY had to cancel her stay in the £20,000-a-night Bridge Suite because her house was threatened by California’s wildfires. Her room went to “Bollywood’s TOM CRUISE”, SHAHRUKH KHAN.
Dolphinarium

Actress LINDSAY LOHAN shared her Neptune suite with lover SAMANTHA RONSON, who was DJ at the after-dinner party in her biggest gig to date.

Their luxury room looked on to an 11million-litre open-air marine centre holding 65,000 types of sea life, including a whale shark.

The 2,000 guests feasted on nearly two tonnes of lobster, 300 kilos of smoked salmon and 4,000 oysters prepared by multi-Michelin starred chefs Santi Santamaria, Michel Rostang, Giorgio Locatelli, celebrity chef Nobu Matsuhisa and 500 cooks.

The 200 dinner tables — decorated with 15,000 stems of carnations — were lit by 3,000 candles.

Tight security surrounded the Dubai Royal family and other VIPs amid fears of a terrorist attack at what has been called the largest private party in history.

The Atlantis has more than 1,500 suites, 27 spa rooms, the biggest water park in the Middle East, a dolphinarium and 3,000 staff.

It was built from scratch — including the island of sand on which it sits — in just four years.

It was the brainchild of South African hotel magnate Sol Kerzner, 73. He already has six five-star resorts.

Last night he told The Sun: “The scale of what we have seen here is appropriate. It cost me $20million for the party but people have to be aware of the scale of this project.

“No famous people were paid to be here and we refused to provide private jets. They came because they wanted to.”

Jesus...this must be the most wasteful city in the world, I'm sure they could have donated that money to feed starving children in Africa. Dubai reminds me of New Pork City! :lol

Honestly, I used to feel proud seeing a Middle Eastern city make such progress in little over a decade, but it has turned into nothing more than a soulless haven for consumerism.

And why the hell was Lindsey Lohan invited? That probably brought down the whole event by a couple notches.

This reminds me of an article I read today about all the 5 star resorts in the Caribbean that have halted construction, while the other ones that were built are mostly empty.

£20 million wasted. £7 Million spent on a firework display. These people have no imam or any sense. This money could have been spent on feeding people.

Honestly they make me sick. With all the poverty in the world I cant believe people would waste so much money..

Dubai is fucked though. See all those houses on the palm island? Nobody is living in them....people buy the real estate and hope to sell it higher....which isn't really happening right now.

This place is going to be a ghost town in 10-20 years.

Has anyone here ever been to Dubai? Is there anything fun to do besides walking around and checking all the hotels? (honest question, I don't know) The only other city that can come close to rivaling Dubai with constant megahotels is Las Vegas, but there's tons of things to do in Vegas, be it world class food, gambling, shows.

i recently had the misfortune of having a stop over in dubai (flying emirates), this place is a hole.

isnt Dubai purposely developing retarded and wasteful projects such as this cuz their oil wells are going to run dry soon, so they need to develop the city/state into somewhere westerners would want to visit and invest in long after the oil is gone...

sorry but putting a bunch of "tallest buildings in the world" and golf courses in the desert doesn't appeal to me...

Erm Dubai is beautiful and i've visited many places. If you want luxury Dubai is it. Theres hardly any crime, women can walk the streets at night without any fear, people leav the doors unlocked, everyone there is there for a reason, no real losers or time wasters. There are no stupid gang rivalry and you dont have to watch your back walking down a dark alley.

The people there live a far better life than they do here (UK). No timewasters, all ambitious strivers. Thats the type of environment i want to be around

You lot need to educate yourselves, and stoping off between flights is not enough. By the gods.

Its very artificial, but what else they gonna do? Buy history? Every new expansion being made in our country is artificial, but we have the luuxry of the past. They dont.

And yes you are right, Dubai olid ir pretty much dry and they are relying on tourists to sustain their playground. Though its Abu Dhabi that are supplying them with all the wealth for these massive projects.

Theres a new Disnyland, Legoland, Six Flags and Marvel world in development. And they are doing some incredible things with the new technology they got to play with.

Yeah they have more than just hotels in Dubai. Dubailand (Amusement park) will be opening some time in the next 2 years, apparently going to be twice the size of Disney world. there is also a dream works park in the works. you can do inside skiing?, umm they have this place where you pay and go inside a car, and it drives ( more like slides down) sandy mountains. it also has the worlds largest mall.

i'm from the UAE, and every time i hear or see Dubai in headlines or on the net i just roll my eyes(as in, oh god what are they doing now?)! they're going over the edge with everything, thank god i don't lie in that city....it's fun for a few days, but then it gets on my never cuz it's too crowded, rush hour is almost every hour and tourists everywhere!!! grrrr...
it's still a fun city to live in if you're young and you like it loud and busy, but i honestly prefer Abu-Dhabi(the capital), which is where i live, it's quieter, yet active, very neat and livable and plenty of great beaches since abu-dhabi essentially an island. Dubai is full of construction everywhere and lost it's culture to turn into this crazy metropolitan city!

heck the original locals of the country amount to only 20% of the poulation, the rest are all foreigners...it pisses me off, it's making the city(and slowly the country) lose it's culture, tradition, values.....pfffff....whatever we have left of it that it!

Has anyone been to The Atlantis in the Bahamas?

I assume it's the same hotel, at least it looks like with marine tanks everywhere. It's the coolest hotel I've been to and I've been to some pretty cool hotels.

Yeah Dubai won't ever make it with its laws. Have fun in Dubai prison when you get caught in the day drinking from a water fountain during Ramedan.

Yeah me and the missus were there a few years ago.. huge place... then you go and take a horse carriage tour around the other side of the island, and its like several bombs went off... things barely capable of holding up their roofs and four walls with people living in them.... depressing as all hell, and then just on the other side of where the ships dock "downtown" all these expensive stores like Cartier, etc.... weird place.

that's BS, you don't go to prison for drinking/eating during Ramadan. you're exaggerating. You'll get a warning as a respect for people that fasting in such a holy month.

Then after the warning it's lashes and jail time if you get caught again. At least thats how it is in Kuwait. Same thing goes with alcohol posession. If you are caught with alcohol at ANY time, you get lashes. Americans love their booze.

Yes, it's amazing what you can do when you shanghai poor foreigners who won't be missed into slavery.
Kudos on the whale shark, though.

Dubai didn't spend the money. Sol Kerzner did. He's South African.

They had a similar party when they opened the Atlantis in the Bahamas. I don't remember people talking about how sick the Bahamians made them and how little sense they had then.

What people seems to ignore is the fact that these people had been living in the country for several months (if not years), and they knew the law. That probably gave them a harder penalty, they were no tourists. They knew that was one of the most unholy stuff to do, but they still did it. And I'm not sure, but weren't they really drunk?

Actually all muslim countries pay a part of their taxes to charity, if I'm not misstaken? So by having that party, they give more to charity.

Yeah it's not like Abu-Dhabi has bought a PL club for £200m and then pumped in another 200 in it right :lol
No pun intended though, I find it interesting that Dubai's oil will last for like 10 years, while Abu's has 50-100 years left or something like that.

Dubai represents pretty much everything that's wrong in today's world. Man-made islands, world's tallest skyscrapers, dozens of crazy five star luxury hotels, world's biggest shopping mall (with a parking lot for 15 000 cars or something like that), biggest firework shows, etc, etc.. And all made possible just in a span of a few years.

It's all just too crazy.

I think quite a number of people share concerns on globalization, commercialization... and basically the world of excess or in general the people of this world's desire for excess.

But instead of complaining and hating, there needs to be more conversation on what are the alternatives. What kind of world can we mould? And the alternatives have to be for everyone -- not just like-minded people: Christians, vegans, social carebears, alcohol abstinents, sexually monogamous persons etc.

It's friggin' hard.

Yeah. They should have stayed a dust bowl mining oil until it ran out and the whole country went bankrupt. What they did was smart. Made an ultra luxury holiday location where they will get billion and billions from tourism.

By the way, the hotels there are so good they are 7 star, not 5.:lol
