After the great Into the Spider Verse, which won the studio its first Oscar for best animated feature film last year - one of the few animated films not created by Disney to have won the statuette, which hasn’t arrived since Rango in 2011 - and while its official sequel is currently scheduled for release in 2022... aside from a fourth Hotel Transylvania movie in 2021. here is that Sony Pictures Animation are sticking to more original movies for now with their upcoming film "Connected", of which Lord / Miller officiates there as producers, who for the time being are joined for the writing and the realization by Mike Rianda and Jeff Frowe, two creative heads of the production team of the cult Disney Channel series, Gravity Falls. Inevitably, when we know the style and the atmosphere of the series, we wonder how they will transpose it this time on the big screen. But concretely, what is Connected (as a side-note originally called "The Mitchells vs. the Machines" ) all about ?
To quote Sony’s official description of the movie :
Sony Pictures Animation's "Connected" is an original animated comedy from director Mike Rianda (Gravity Falls) and producers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, The Lego Movie), about an everyday family's struggle to relate while technology rises up around the world! When Katie Mitchell (voiced by Abbi Jacobson), a creative outsider, is accepted into the film school of her dreams, her plans to meet "her people" at college are upended when her nature-loving dad Rick (voiced by Danny McBride) determines the whole family should drive Katie to school together and bond as a family one last time. Katie and Rick are joined by the rest of the family, including Katie's wildly positive mom Linda (voiced by Maya Rudolph), her quirky little brother Aaron (voiced by Mike Rianda), and the family's delightfully chubby pug Monchi for the ultimate family road trip. Suddenly, the Mitchells' plans are interrupted by a tech uprising: all around the world, the electronic devices people love – from phones, to appliances, to an innovative new line of personal robots – decide it's time to take over. With the help of two friendly malfunctioning robots, the Mitchells will have to get past their problems and work together to save each other and the world!
So here is one more animated film that joins the schedule of animated outings for 2020, which will see films like Trolls - World Tour (April 17), Scoob! (May 15), the third SpongeBob movie (May 22), the upcoming Pixar movie Soul (June 18), Minions 2 : Rise of Gru (July 3), the film based on the series Bob's Burgers (July 16 in the USA ), The One and Only Ivan (August 12 in the USA) and finally the next animated film from the Disney studios, Raya and the Last Dragon (November 25). In short, another year in which most of the releases are essentially sequels or reboots of franchises already well established in the collective consciousness of animation aficionados.
I’m personally really looking forward to the movie. It’s refreshing to see Sony Pictures Animation try out a different art style after the eye-candy treat of Into The Spider Verse, and Phil Lord and Christopher Miller have proven me that anything animation-related they touch turns into gold. According to the producers themselves, we should be expecting a « sophisticated take » on the themes of the place of technology within our lives, consider me intrigued then !
