Sony verkauft weltweit 10 Mio. PSP

They won't have problems with their shipping targets! There are about 2 million PSP's in NA and a good bit over 1 million in Europe (+ atleast 500k in Japan/Asia) lying on the shelves/whereever.
They already shipped 19.6 million games and 15 million (!!!) UMD movies.

It's gotta hurt, doesn't it :lol :lol

Tokyo, October 21, 2005 – Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) announced today that
the cumulative production shipment of its PSP® (PlayStation®Portable) handheld
entertainment system had reached 10 million units worldwide, as of October 21st, 2005.
Shipment of 10 million units within 10 months since launch is the fastest penetration speed in
the PlayStation® platforms introduced in the past. Along with the exciting and extensive
lineup of software titles for the year-end/New Years peak selling season, shipment of PSP is
steadily growing in Japan, North America and Europe.
Since its launch in Japan in December 2004, North America in March 2005, Southeast
Asia in May 2005, and in Europe in September, 2005, PSP has steadily been establishing its
place as a new handheld entertainment platform around the world. With its overwhelming
presence and impact, unparalleled in handheld systems, PSP has been gaining huge support
from a broad range of consumers.
On the software side, PSP®Game software shipment has reached 19.6 million units and
197 titles have become available worldwide as of September, 2005. Market for the
UMD®Video software titles have been expanding and cumulative production shipment has
exceeded over 15 million units as of September 2005. More new and attractive titles are
expected to be released from content developers and publishers for the holiday season.

@kpop Sorry, didn't see that thread :(

@Sonycowboy ... it's just great. PSP is sold out in Europe (atleast in a few areas), but there should be more than 1 million PSP's lying ... somwhere.

Sony has shipped 10 millions PSP, but the important thing it's not the shipment, but the sales.

Sony has sold only 5 millions PSP worldwide: so they have the double in magazine's stocks.

Remember the officials numbers:

PSP: 1.9 millions in Japan
2.0 millions in USA
1.0 million in PAL (Europe+Australia+.....)

Total: 4.9 millions sold worldwide

Nintendo DS: 3.4 millions Japon
2.2 millions USA
1.5-2.0 (?) millions in PAL (Europe+Australia+.....)

Total: 7.1-7-6 millions sold worldwide

Source: Media Create (Japan)
NPD (USA)
Nintendo & Sony (PAL Territories)

Nice numbers pulled out of your ass, here's the truth, though:

http://www.ga-forum.com/showthread.php?t=66928&highlight=PSP+million

Sony's CEO Howard Stringer: 6 million PSPs sold

Stringer can say what he will, but the numbers I have wrote are the officials numbers from neutral source (NPD-Media Create).

-------->>>These numbers are the most reliable.

fair enough. I guess Sony must have shares in some storage company. And like pissing money away to have 5 million in a secret X-files warehouse somewhere.

I don't believe what Iwata, Stringer or Gates say, because they say only what they will.

The only thing we can do is believe in the neutrals sources, because they aren't affiliates with Sony, Nintendo or Microsoft.

For me, what Media Create & NPD say are far more reliables than Sony of Nintendo.

Of course man, I was just teasing ;)

It's only to make a little comparison.
Even with NPD numbers, you miss the real numbers.
You also didn't include the fact that it's OVER 1million sold in Europe and we have no idea how much over and the fact that there are PSPs being sold in more than those three markets.
Ex. I live in Singapore and it's selling well here.

Here's the scoop!!

Sony counts orders as "shipped". Case in point, Wal-Mart orders 900,000 PSPs in October to supply thier holiday sales through the end of the year. Sony ships those PSPs, along with other orders, from its manufacturing plants to its U.S. Warehouse, which eventually get shipped out again to the retailers.

So, as soon as a PSP leaves the manufacturing plant Sony counts it as "shipped".

Nintendo doesn't do it this way. Niether does Microsoft. Both those companies count shipped only when the units are sent to retailers.

Singapore, Taiwan, Korea......

These aren't big market.

The sales of a machine comes from Japan, Nord America & Europe.
You can say that the PSP has sold well in Singapore, but aren't this places that make a product a success or a failure.

And sure the PSP (and the Nintendo DS, and the PS2, and the Gamecube, ....) aren't selling more than some thousands copies in these states.

They should be doing that aswell though, it's good PR.

it's lies. but it's good PR and there are stupid people who believe in them.

most people. But it's really striking in this case in particular, I've seen them release shipped numbers before and not have them be THAT far off from the sold estimates.

In Sony we trust. Or could it be another marketing window dressing tactic?
What would be the purpose of manipulating figures in their PRs? Making the PSP look more successful than it is, to ensure store managers see it as the hottest item this season and push even more the PSP in their shelves?

No, Sony wouldn't do that, would they? That would be evil. Yet it's not as if the anti Dreamcast PR campaigns never existed. We'll know the answer in a few months. Bookmark this thread.

Real reason probably has to do with thier accounting methods.

Why do the media and retailers believe these " lies"? you can call it PR, hype or spin but this announcement of 10 million PSP units shipped seems intended to fool/mislead retailers and casual gamers.
This is going to backfire for Sony, because when we all see that PSP sales were much less than anticipated for the holiday period up till Xmas, then reverse momentum will be PSP's destiny. Remember PSP's competition for our Holiday spending is:-

XBOX 360
PS2
IPod nano, mini, video
Gizmondo
NDS
GBA SP & micro.

Parents are more likely to buy a Nintendogs or Mario Kart bundle as a gift for their kids, for $149 (£99) than a PSP with a game for $300 (£200). Gifts are a huge part of holiday/Xmas sales. Do not overestimate the power of playstation!!!

how is it lies if it only includes those units *ordered* by retailers? Sure they might not be in the retail channel immediately, but that'll be reflected by Q1 figures

My god, that's the kind of desperate PR you get out of Tiger Telematics.

It's really amazing how the Sony name is pushing this thing to retailers.
actually it was talked about in the other thread (the first one) that this isn't to retailers. Sony counts shipped as soon as it leaves the manufacturing plant. So a portion of these 10 million units aren't even destined for retailers (yet).
