13+ Hour Road Trip: PSP or DS?

The thing to remember about getting a PSP, haunts, is that you're going to have to spend another $100 or so to get a good size memory stick duo; if you want to watch movies, you're not going to want anything less than 1gb. As for games, obviously GTA is the one to get, but don't forget about stuff like Darkstalkers Chronicle and Guilty Gear XX #Reload. Plus if you can get the right firmware, you can use all the emulators.

The DS is going to be cheaper and there are awesome games like Meteos and Castlevania available, so both systems are worth looking into.

Although if you just want something mess around with in the car for a little while, screw them both and go pick up a GBA SP or Micro and some cheap games instead. I wouldn't bother buying a DS or PSP unless you really think you're going to be playing them a lot after your trip is over.

Why spend extra $$ for another memory stick duo when the gigapack is already out?

movies are pretty easy on PSP, but for anything decent you need to drop an extra $100 on a 1GB mem stick.

Seriously, if you haven't bought either one up to now, than I dont think it's all that wise to invest 300$ for a handheld, + 50-100$ for a memory stick if you want do get any use

Gigapack says "hi everybody!"

Last time I went on a road trip, I decided to bring my PS2 and screen instead. Watched DVD movies and played some Third Strike in the back.

whats up playa.. thanks for the advice.

im going to NEC so wish me luck. heh. :)

How much is the giga pack supposed to be? I see NCS has it for pre-order for $329...doesn't really sound like much of a savings to me.

For 3rd Strike or actually something else for once?? :)

people trying to make the Mario Kart online play sound like you gotta go through a lot of trouble :(

Just stop by a McDonalds along your trip and you can play online mario kart.

Why not just use the laptop only? Load up Grim Fandango or Age of Empires or something equally good and addictive with low system specs, chuck on some music, movies etc and you're set! Hell, even chuck a GBA emu on there if you really insist on gaming on a small screen with clunky graphics.

To me, it's a no brainer unless you don't want to spend too much.

The DS offers a slew of good games to play, but be wary if you buy a couple for the ride, you may find yourself growing tired of their gimmicks (I don't like that word, it seems kinda harsh now) or their inherent lack of replayability after the trip is over. Advance Wars and Meteos however are solid choices, but Kirby, Yoshi, Warioware, Trauma Center and Phoenix Wright, while good, are better rentals than purchases. The main problem with the DS is that games is all it offers, but it does offer that at a reduced price.

The PSP on the other hand offers at the very least an equal gaming experience, and has a ton of games in varying genres that all provide great replay value. GTA and SOCOM are incredible if you want action, WipEout, Burnout and Ridge Racer are the tops for racing, and Virtua Tennis and (especially) Hot Shots Golf: Open Tee own for sports. Oh, and Lumines just happens to be the best puzzle game of the last 10 years as well.

Plus, if you decide to snag the Giga pack, you can also utilize the system as an MP3 player and a video player. Rip your DVD's or (erhm...) 'borrow' some vids off the 'net and convert 'em to mp4's. Hell, you could even browse the used bins at Blockbuster or whatever for some used UMD's (I've seen some as cheap as $8 CDN). A car charger would be a wise accessory though, as you'll end up using the system a lot. The downside to this over the DS? The price is much steeper.

Bottom line, is whether you want games, or whether you want games, movies and music. Simple as that.

The PSP is a luxury item. The optimal system requires a 1GB memory card, and some people may not want to spend that.

Are the games worth the premium? I say yes, though detractors will go "IT HAS NO GAMES!!!!!! DEY TUK UR JRRRRRB!" instead of mowing enough lawns to actually buy one for themselves.

Besides, we all know what the King of the Portables is

My Lynx makes my NiMh batteries run and hide.

Oddly enough, I just bought that Lynx on Sunday with a whole crap ton of games in Shibuya(!!!). My 2600mah NiMhs simply DO NOT WORK. The Lynx refuses to start up. But when I replaced the batts with Costco AA's, it totally turns right on. WTF?

Wish I woulda had my PSP last time we drove to Philly (I was thinking about buying it, but I was broke at the time). Just brought my laptop+ePSXe and lotsa music/movies.

Can't really go wrong with either, they both have at least a few great games.

I'd say if you're just going to play games, DS longer battery life FTW, but if you want multimedia and such PSP is a must, not that the PSP can't hold it's own weight in the games department, but it's battery life wouldn't last half the trip without the assistance of a car charger (I usually manage about 6 or so hours outta mine with games ripped to the memstick to reduce UMD battery usage, 40% volume, wifi off, and the lcd screen set to the second brightness setting, but for certain games like GTA that wouldn't be a viable option.

Really, like everyone here has said they both have their flaws it all depends on wich games/features appeal to you most.

DS for good games..

iPod Video for TV shows & Movies.. While the screen is smaller than the PSP, the video quality is better..

I have every Family Guy episode on mine! :) Let's see you do that with the PSP (four 2GB or 8 1GB sticks later :lol :lol )

Did you just say that there is no good games on the PSP and that the DS has better video playback?

Seriously?

Oh noes... :lol

Bizzare Sho.

I'll dig my Lynx out and test it with my energizer 2600s if you like.

Could you do that? It's driving me crazy. They're all freshly charged and brand new, and yet they don't function.

I'm purposely ignoring the rest of this retarded thread :lol

If you have a Costco around you get there pack it just like the giga expect no usb hook-up but you get 2 games.
Hot Sjoots Open Tee (this could very well take up all 13 hours bro)
Ant an ATV off road game (if thats not your thing you can just take it into a gamestop I bet)
340 after tax +/-

He said that iPod has better video playback. I'm not sure how true that is...

And the PSP has none? I think the likes of Ridge Racer, Grand Theft Auto, Burnout Legends, Virtua Tennis, Lumines, Darkstalkers Chronicle, Guilty Gear XX #Reload, Metal Gear Ac!d, Gundam Battle Tactics, Princess Crown, SSX On Tour, and more (I can keep going if you'd like :P) don't agree with that statement.

Both systems have good games. IMO the DS has several more OMG TEH AWESOME games than the PSP, but the PSP has more decent-good games than the DS.

You have certainly brought many interesting points into this thread.

Let's go over the negatives of each system.

even though the PSP has some really great emus out there, the SNES and Genesis ones don't run at full speed even when the PSP is overclocked (which drains the battery pretty fast) and the horrific d-pad ruins Contra games, Gunstar Heroes, or anything that requires pressing a diagonal. Everything else should be sort of close to the original experience.

The PSP library is fine, but if you have already played the PS2 counterparts, your gaming experience will be seriously diluted. If you've burned out on Burnout 2 and 3, Burnout Legends will feel like the biggest waste of money ever.

DS homebrew is a mess. I'm not even going to get into that. Also, playing movies on the DS is a waste of time because of the small screen and crappy framerates. I'm not even sure any "movie players" even uses the extra processing power of the DS (over GBA) to play movies yet.

I hope you know what you are getting into when you buy DS games because there is a very big divide in opinion as to which DS games are the good ones. You'd better have the patience for mini-games and gimmicks.

Look at the game libraries and decide for yourself based on those.
Since you already have a laptop, use it for movies.

I don't own a PSP, so I'd naturally suggest a DS.

I'd pretty much cite the usual suspects (AW;DS, MK;DS, C;DoS, Meteos, Ndogs), but the GBA has been given new life through the DS as well (for me, anyways).

I ended up getting a DS last night from a freind. She had a blue one and wanted the silver one so sold me hers and said shed just end up buying another one. Sooo, 80 bucks for a mint DS is pretty solid in my book.

It's like trying to justify choosing Xbox or GameCube over PS2 (+PS1). There's just no comparison.

Absolute statements as to the quality of either library without IMHOs are out of line. I for one, take the current PSP library over the DS library without blinking. As far as the GBA catalog-- I have a GBA, I've played that out. And, it's overrated. IMHO.

That's weird. Mine works well enough with NiMH -- not sure how many hours I get from them, though. I'll check the mah on them -- I think they are 2200, though. They seem to work well enough.

What games did you get for it?

for precision games that is actually a good point.. I can only imagine kirby is a big pain in the ass in the car.

but for point and click games like phoenix wright or advance wars it isn't a big deal at all to play them with the stylus.
